Carrying as much water as you need for extended trips is impossible. Besides being bulky, each gallon weighs about eight pounds, making the aggregate unwieldy. Thus, long-distance hikers as well as people in survival situations must know how to find, store, and purify water.

For short trips, water can be carried in a variety of containers. Metal vacuum flasks are almost unbreakable but can be heavy when filled. Plastic bottles are lightweight and tough but may melt if left too close to a fire.
 Pouches clipped to the belt or worn on the back allow water to be easily accessed while keeping hands free.

Losing up to five percent of body fluids causes thirst, weakness, nausea, and irritability. Pulse increases, and skin may become flushed. Judgment may be seriously impaired even if the body loses only two percent of its fluids.
Losing up to ten percent causes headaches, dizziness, and tingling in limbs. Sufferers may lose the ability to walk and speak clearly. Skin may turn blue, and vision may begin to blur.


Loss of 15 percent severely impairs vision and hearing, swells the tongue, and makes urination painful. Sufferers may be unable to swallow, or may exhibit signs of delirium.

It’s best to take small drinks at regular intervals, such as every hour, to prevent dehydration.

Look for obvious signs of dehydration in yourself and your companions: dark, sunken eyes; dark, smelly urine; fatigue; and shriveled skin. Begin drinking immediately.
The optimal drink for someone who already is dehydrated is plain water. Salts and minerals in sports drinks can interfere with the body’s absorption of water.


Don’t wait to become thirsty before you start drinking or looking for water. A noticeable thirst begins when the body is two percent dehydrated. It’s difficult to drink more than a quart of water at one time without experiencing discomfort; therefore, once serious dehydration begins, it may take hours to return your body to a healthy state.

So in conclusion on water make sure you are doing everything you possibly can to stay hydrated and healthy. Now lets move on to another topic.

Alright, now we are going to start working on the next part of staying alive in the tundra which is mainly learning how to properly use and harvest from any animal you kill or hunt properly. Staying warm is important. So it is worth learning how to harvest the skins and furs of the creatures you kill. Now if you are some sort of animal rights i suggest you stop watching this episode right now.

Shiki pulled out a crude stone knife. "If the sight or thought of blood and guts makes you squeamish, skip to the last two pictures which show what a human carnivore is comfortable with seeing these days. In one of our previous episodes we already covered the basics of hunting large game.

How can someone suggest that paying for the slaughter of animals is more justifiable than taking the responsibility for one's food into one's own hands? At moments like this, though, I understand their perspective much better. It takes a strong stomach and a lot of dedication to do this job properly. You need to be able to visualize the end result. The end result... Shiki said. Is survival. The only difference between a store and the wild.

Shiki gave a wolfish smile. The only difference is that nature is free... Going back to one of the most fundamental lessons I can teach you is that survival is a mindset. When we are at a time when your sensory perceptions are vital to survival, we let our up bring us reduce ourselves to everything but that. Civilization is a mechanism that allows us to avoid the necessary but ugly aspects of life; most of us do not euthanize our own pets.

We don't for our own food. We don't butcher our own animals. We don't manage our own estates. As a result, this makes us soft.

The first step of this process is the blood draining. It's essential that we try and do this in a way where it doesn't let all the blood travel across the open air of the tundra. Shiki looked at the camera. As humans, we tend to think of ourselves at the top of the food chain. Especially when we have just captured or hunted down another animal. But the reality is all animals are dangerous for different reasons. 

Even small things like rabbits if they are not killed out right can scream a high pitched scream. This cream can carry for about a mile in all directions and tends to attract other predators as well as scare off any future prey. Your average everyday citizen would jump at the idea of eating some rare exotic meat they have never consumed before. Yet for some reason, people don't make the same connection to wild animals. 

Animals like wolves, large cats jaguars and lions especially share our predatory instinct. They too might jump at the chance for food.

Now that we have the bison in front of us we can use its circulatory system in our favour. Step one we need to find its main vein. No not it's dick you sick pervert. But it's corraited artery and jugular vein. Making two deep cuts along these the body should start to drain all the blood before it starts to coagulate in its muscles. The slope of the hill that we made should aid in that process.

Of course as the hot blood starts to drain from the animal it will start to melt the snow. This is good because it will slowly make the bison become more at an angle of the snow bank as its head starts to lower down into the snow. Shiki grabbed his stone knife. For this particular moment I am using a simple and crude sharpened stone knife that I created simply using one rock and another rock to break this into a usable edge.

Shiki brought the knife towards the animals throat and left a deep incision and cut through the sinewy throat of the animal.

As Shiki sawed his hands became red with the warm gushing blood of the bison. The blood came down in a dark red stream and soaked through the snow. As the snow came into contact with the warm blood it melted away almost instantly. The dark mushy mixture filled the air with the scent of fresh blood over the almost odorless snow. Shiki grabbed the animals hind quarters and hoisted it up.


After bleeding the animal, the next step was to remove the head. Using the jagged piece of rock almost all the skinning was done using stone flakes and stone knives. The stone knives were very good at removing the skin.Once the hide had been peeled back from the belly,Shiki opened it up to remove the organs.

This was one of the more challenging parts do to the amount of connective tissue that had to be broken up without sharp tools for fear of piercing organs.

The last thing you wanted was digestive materials on the meat. It was quite an experience being shoulder deep inside feeling around for connective tissue. The body was still hot inside after an hour. Shiki smiled as he looked back at the camera. It's still hot inside the animal. Check it out. You can still see that hot steam coming out of the animals body. Carefully removing some of the organs you couldn't use. 

Shiki pulled out a small shovel. This next part is rather important. Make sure you are properly removing all the unwanted or unusable animal parts in a secure way. This kill will attract predators and scavengers. So the best thing to do would be to take the parts and pieces you need and move on. The key pieces you want here is the animal hide and the most amount of choice meat you can grab.

Shiki slowly started to break the animal down into smaller parts showing exactly how the break down was done.

Shiki smiled as he set the splint up over the fire. "Now that that is starting to get roasted. Lets start prepping the other parts of the animal. Now all those other parts of the animal that we pulled out are all organs. Some of them are quite good for you and are packed with great amounts of nutrients and vitamins. All this stuff is quite essential if you want to stay alive out here. Some of the other sweet meats like the kidneys and bladder/stomach you want to stay away from. But the liver is super good for you."



Pulling the stomach out of the animal Shiki put on the ground. In a pinch you can use the the stomach as a make shift water container. Well folks lets get to the next part of this episode.

Shiki started breaking the animal parts down in a very neat and easy method. Cutting the hind legs apart from the base of the spine he dragged each of the legs apart and set them in the snow. Once they were set in the snow he grabbed several handfuls of snow and started to pack it down on the legs of the bison. There was only so much meat you could reasonably consume and it was way to cold to make jerky or any time of meat that you could store on the go. But the tundra had the added bonus of self made preservation.



Here outside there was a sense of natural refrigeration. "Look here. The easiest and most delicious parts of the animal are the parts that are right at the base of the spine and along the spinal column. This tenderloin is the part that should be eaten quickly. Not because it spoils easily. But mostly because the meat is so tender that the cold and exposure to the moisture actually can damage the meat and make it inedible and more importantly unpalatable." Shiki winked at the camera.



Shiki took the stone knife and began to separate the meat from the spinal column. Now as the haunches of the bison are freezing. Lets get started cooking up some of this meat. Shiki took the tenderloin and put them on a split

Ladies and gentlemen today we have a special adventure set up for you today. It's me your host. The legendary hydra slaying, monster hunting, professional chef and beloved survivalist Shiki senri. Today I am coming to you to teach you how to survive the most dangerous places on this planet. But every fluffball can survive in the wild. I am going to teach you how to thrive in the wild. You know what... Fuck thriving. I'm going to teach you how to not just thrive. You are going to learn how win. 

But enough lip service. Let me get to work with showing you how all this is done. Today we are going to be exploring into the underworld. Caving, sometimes known as spelunking, can be a fun, exciting hobby and a valuable tool for scientific discovery. But the hidden world of caves can be as dangerous as it is fascinating, and even the most experienced cavers can easily be injured or get lost in a cave. When something goes wrong below ground, you can quickly find yourself in a survival situation. Here’s how to make it out alive.

I'm going to break all of this down into 8 really easy to follow steps as we start making our way into the dark cave systems together. There is really only so much I can do to walk you through this so please pay attention.

Enter a cave well-prepared. Caving is inherently dangerous, but you can reduce the risk by learning proper caving techniques, bringing the right equipment, and knowing how to use your techniques. Especially if you’re new to caving, don’t go in without an experienced guide, and never explore caves alone. Always make sure you notify someone where you will be and when you expect to return so that they can notify rescuers if you can’t. Bring warm, NON-COTTON clothes and a plastic bag or emergency blanket. It is important that all layers of clothes are made of a synthetic fabric, even undergarments and socks.

Cotton absorbs and holds much more water than synthetic fibers. Wearing standard cotton garments in a cave will cool your body very rapidly. If cotton layers are worn (as an absolute last resort) make sure they are above the synthetic layers. Doing the opposite will rob your body of heat, as the most wet layer will be in direct contact with the skin. Also, make sure your flashlight or headlamp is in good working condition (and bring a spare light source and batteries). The best way to survive in a cave is to know the cave and to be prepared.


Shiki looked at the camera. I can't express how important it is that you don't put all your light sources and materials in the same bags and pouches. Keep them all together in the event that if you lose a bag you wont be totally fucked.

Mark your path. Caves can be maze like and confusing, but there’s almost no reason to get lost in one. Always be aware of your surroundings, and note landmarks. In addition, be sure to mark the way out at all intersections. Use rocks to make an arrow pointing the way you came, scratch an arrow on the cave floor, leave yourself notes, or tie ribbons or leave glow sticks to show you the way back. Make sure you can differentiate your marks from those that other cavers may have left. Not only will marking your path help lead you out safely, it will also help rescuers find you if you can’t get out on your own.


Let me break this down for you barney style.  Sometimes you might be in the position that you might be without a light source. Wasting all your glow sticks might seem like a bad idea and it might well be. But you need to make sure that in the event of a total black out. A blackout meaning a situation where you no longer have any light or power for your flash light. You need to be able to find your back out to the front of the cave without getting caught in the darkness. 

Shiki got down on the ground and gathered up a pile of small rocks. You are gonna want to set the stones down in an arrow. This way if you are walking along on your way back there is no way you'd miss it.

Remain calm. If you do find yourself lost, injured, or trapped don’t panic. Assess your situation and think clearly about how to get out. Look here. In the events that thing go ass up down here the last thing you want to do is panic. Here in the cave there is one important thing that really trumps everything down here. That thing being said there was one thing that could really kill you. That is getting lost in a massive cave complex.

There in the cave there is a simple marking technique you can use to make sure that you get out alive and safe. An easy way to make sure properly survive and escape the cave is by just hugging the left side of the cave system. Under no circumstances should you come off the cave wall in a manner of dark vision. Even if you see light coming off the cave floor from an entrance the last thing you want to do is to come off the wall and end up falling into a cavern or anything along those lines. 

Look when you are wandering through the caves it can be real easy to forget which way you are facing as you are walking around. There can be many pitfalls and drops into floors below. You need to make sure you don't fall through.

Stay together if you’re in a group. There is safety in numbers, so be sure to stay together. Hold hands if you must move in darkness, and don’t let anybody fall behind.
 Stay warm and dry. Caves are frequently cold, and hypothermia is one of the most dangerous hazards you will face. Always bring warm, non-cotton clothes, and pack a large plastic bag in your helmet to wear as a poncho to conserve warmth. Keep your helmet on at all times. If you have to endeavor into water i.e.if the cave is flooded, or if you must cross a stream take off your clothes to keep them dry, and then dry off and put them back on when you’re out of the water.

If your clothes get wet and you don’t have replacements, wring them out thoroughly and wear them so your body heat can dry them. Huddle with your group for warmth, and minimize contact with the cold ground. Try to keep moving even if it’s just moving in place if you get too cold, but avoid breaking a sweat.
 Ration your food and water supplies. If you told somebody on the outside when to expect you and you absolutely must do this help should be on its way soon.

If for some reason, such as flooding or cave collapse it may take a while for rescuers to come, make sure to ration your food and make it last. Make sure everybody gets enough water, but don’t try to save it as long as possible.

Keep well hydrated even if you’re not thirsty. If you run out of water, you can drink water you find in the cave, but be aware that it may be contaminated and should only be used as a last resort. Conserve your light. Turn off flashlights when you are not moving, and use only one at a time. Form a chain of people following one with a flashlight. If you're using a headlamp, use the lowest output setting.

Stay put if you don’t have light. Unless you are quite certain that help will not be coming, do not move without light. A cave is a dangerous, unpredictable environment, and the risk of injury outweighs all other hazards. If you must move without light, proceed with extreme caution. Crawling may be the best option to avoid falls. This way you can move slowly along the cave floor making sure that you can feel the ground in front of you to avoid falling into any literal pit falls.

Now once you navigate your way through the cave and have gotten a pretty good grasp of the cave system. You can start walking through the cave for the gems and other things you might be searching for.
