Description: With a successful Cooking/Baking check, a cook can make nutritious meals out of just about any edible substance and can create hot meals even in the wilderness. Failure means that the food is disgusting and inedible. Cooking a meal generally takes no more than an hour, although the preparation of ingredients and dishes may take several. When choosing this skill the user must choose either Cooking or Baking. Baking is the ability to cook by dry heat without direct exposure to a flame, typically in an oven or on a hot surface. Look in Task Skills thread found in the Skills and Traits Index for more information. Each time learned user gets 5 die roll to increase the skill.

"Is that camera set up?" Shiki squared off the camera and had it set up on a tripod pointed towards his kitchen. He had always wanted to do something like this. Grabbing a hold of his apron he tied the apron on behind him and started the process of tying the apron on. Grabbing his chef hat he put it on and looked at the mirror. He was looking good. Adjusting the cuff of the hat and getting himself ready to start he gave a nervous smile.

Shiki looked and faced the camera. "Goooood morning Kumgakure! I'm your lovable lighting host and self proclaimed master chef or survival. Shiki Senri." Shiki smiled at the camera as his confidence was suddenly improving being under the lime light. "My goal is going to show you all of the fun and excitement you can get here in the art of culinary excellence. I'm here to show you how to make delicious dishes that you can make yourself in a pinch. "

Shiki wandered over to the actual kitchen area behind him. "Whether you are a survival nut just looking improve your skills in cooking to make surviving not just taste like butthole. OR you are someone who is just looking to save some money on groceries every month. Welcome aboard.

"I've been a great many things in my life. Ninja, Monster hunter, pirate and an avid gardener. My time here on this earth has put me in many a sticky situation where the only thing I had to eat was the things I could find and eat out in the wilderness. Well... Enough talking! Lets get started." Shiki walked over to a series of assorted knives. "These knives here are what a normal chef uses to cook with." Shiki slowly held up the many assorted knives of varying cleavers and blades.

Shiki then promptly tossed them all to the side. "We don't use that shit here." When you are out in the wild you won't have the good fortune to have an entire assortments of knives to lug around just to cut things. Instead... You might have something like this." Shiki reached into his pocket and slammed a hunting knife down into the table. The knife was a simple blade obviously well sharpened and maintained.

It's deer horn and dark wood hilt were polished to the point of brilliance. "Having a blade isn't always essential per say. But I wouldn't leave home without it. This blade could be the difference between having a hot meal and a cold hungry night."

Shiki grabbed the blade and grabbed a Rabbit. The Rabbit was obviously still alive and in a state of confusion and a total sense of ignorance to its soon to be dramatic demise. "Rabbits and birds are the most readily available source of quick food that you can confirm is safe to eat. If you know the flora and fauna in an area you can survive just on insects and herbs. But you need to be careful plants and insects have a higher chance to be toxic or venomous to the human body. 

"So... Here is the situation. Its cold and you have been traveling for hours and hours endlessly trudging along through the mud. Your body needs fuel." Shiki held up the rabbit by the scruff of its neck. After some time Buggs here starts to look mighty tasty... I'm not an animal rights activist by any stretch of the imagination. But I do believe that any creature that is killed should be granted a swift painless death." Shiki reached out and suddenly broke the rabbits neck and set it down on the table. 

"its important that if you catch one of these guys alive that you don't slit its throat. A lot of people thing that it's the best way to do it. But they couldn't be more wrong." Shiki set the rabbit down and grabbed his blade.

Blood is a very nutritious part of the animal. You want as much of it to be in the meat you are about to consume as possible. Letting the animals blood coagulate a bit you can make sure that the animals meat stays juicy and full of vitamins. Typically in a fine restaurant people totally enjoy having meat rare of bloody. But with rabbits having any uncooked meat in it could give a disease known as hare fever. Trust me ladies and gents, you don't want hare fever.

Shiki ran the blade along the animals mid section and kept the animal in such a way that the incision was  facing upwards now. "At this point the blood should have pooled in the animal. Depending on if you plant to use the rabbits fur or not is up to you. But just out of force of habit I always skin the animal in such a way where I can use the skin as I'd like too. Now from here you are going to want a collection bucket of some sort for the animals blood. 

Shiki then began to skillfully cut through the animal and peel back its skin. Labeling the parts of the animal that could be best used.

Cooking

After a few minutes of cutting Shiki hand a large amount of rabbit haunches in front of him. The hind quarters as well as several other piles of edible meat. "Going back to what I was saying you are going to want to make sure that the rabbit is cooked through." Starting a small wood fire Shiki put the rabbits on a wood split and set the rabbit high above the fire. A lot of people make this common mistake. They set the rabbit in the flame trying to get a sear on it. 

But in reality putting the rabbit directly into the fire only burns the rabbit and could actually ruin the meat. ruin in the worse case scenario meaning that the food itself becomes damaged to the point of being either not able to eat or in some cases simply make the meat so dry and burnt that although edible. It would just be  a waste of time to eat. Shiki rotated the meat slowly over the the fire.

What you want from the fire isn't the flame but rather the heat. The trick is a low heat over a long period of time. Now as this meat is started we can get working on some things that will help make this not taste so gamely.

Cooking 

Shiki reached underneath the cabinet and pulled out a cutting board full of several green plants and roots. Now... before I begin let me preface this. A lot of herbs don't do much in the world nutrients. But it can improve flavor a lot. Now I know what some of you hard core survival people are thinking right now. Taste doesn't change your survival chances. Taste radadadadada... All of you are wrong. Now If asked you right now which group was more likely to survive in a survival situation. 

Group A who was sitting in a sad wet pit of mud eating insect protein and dry rabbit. Or group B in the same pit of mud but they are eating an herb encrusted rotisserie rabbit that has been cooking on a splint for 2 1/2 hours. You'd most likely want to be in the second group right? Right. Now... Starting with our herbs. You never want to put anything you don't know on top of your food. It could cause a whole mess of problems for you. 

You can identify most house hold herbs that are safe for consumption based on their smell. If you made it this far in life not knowing what parsley or thyme smell like I'd suggest running to your local grocery store and familiarizing yourself with them.

Description: This skill is highly useful for thieves and adventurers, as it allows characters to estimate the value and authenticity of antiques, art objects, jewelry, cut gemstones, or other items they find. The character must examine the item to be appraised in good lighting conditions. A successful skill check enables the character to estimate the value of the item to the nearest 20% of its true value and to identify fakes. Appraisers with practical knowledge of the skills needed to create the items they are appraising (i.e., a Weaponsmith appraising a Sword) make easier Appraisal checks based on their mastery of the subject. Novice mastery provides 10%, Average gives 15% and Advanced or greater mastery yields a 20% bonus on Appraisal skill check rolls for such items. Look in Academia Skills thread found in the Skills and Traits Index for more information. If user has 25 or more Ranks in Appraisal user gains a Synergy Bonus +10 to Haggle pertaining to the type of Appraisal. Each time learned user gets 2 die roll to increase the skill.

Ahooooy there maties! It is I the white haired youth of Kumogakure. Everyone's favorite ninja Shiki Senri here and I'm here to talk about something that is near and dear to every young pirates heart. Shiki's eyes widened as a mischievous grin spread across his face. That's right ladies and gentlemen. Today... The subject... Be booty. Shiki let the word booty hang in the air for a moment before continuing.

Not just any booty mind you. We shall be talking about the most expensive and exquisite type of booty that ever existed. The type of booty that general comes with a nice chest and the most expensive pad locks. Ladies and gentlemen today I'm going to show you how to check for value of the most expensive and exotic gems that can be found on the seven seas. 

Today... I'll be showing you how to tell the difference between getting paid in costume jewelryand getting paid in plastic and cold hard rocks.

Yarrrrgh today we are gonna be talking about the most precious green gem of the south seas... A ruby is a pink to blood-red colored gemstone... it glows with the dark red desire of mens hearts. Gentlemen there is no more attractive of a stone then that of a bright red ruby setting abreast of a bed of gold or silver. Rubies are actually made of the same element of a sapphire it actually just comes from a different color. 

The quality of a ruby is determined by its color, cut, and clarity. All of these properties, together with carat weight, affect the value of a ruby. Yarghh... these words be sounding might fancy and over complicated. So let ol' Shiki break this down fer yeah. The color of this rock sparkles and shines sure... 

But the real answer as to where one would get the color derivative is just how red this stone is. How deep the color is.

There be a number of different measures of a stones worth.  The brightest and most valuable "red" called blood-red or "pigeon blood", commands a large premium over other rubies of similar quality. After color follows clarity: similar to diamonds, a clear stone will command a premium, but a ruby without any needle-like rutile inclusions may indicate that the stone has been treated. 

Basically beauty is perspective. Some stones are worth different degrees of value based on on the rarity of the color. The color of the red can have different value because some of the reds you find are much more rare then your average pretty red stone. The deeper the red of the stone and the brighter the clarity the more attractive the stone becomes. 

Thus the more valuable the actual stone is. Shiki held up the different colors of the bright red gems ranging from everything to a bright scarlet red to a dark blood red gem stone. Welcome to the world of rubies.

Emeralds occur in hues ranging from yellow-green to blue-green, with the primary hue necessarily being green. Yellow and blue are the normal secondary hues found in emeralds. Only gems that are medium to dark in tone are considered emerald; light-toned gems are known instead by the species name green beryl.

Ahoy maties... Today we are going to be covering another gem stone that every adventure dreams of finding. These beauties right here are the most magical gems in the whole world in my humble opinion. As a young adventurer there was nothing more charming then opening up a bright chest and finding a charming amount of colored rocks.

Opening a box full of some dusty brightly colored rocks might seem like a boring moment but in reality... This dusty pile of stones could be worth the price of your ship.

Thus, if an emerald has no visible inclusions to the eye  it is considered flawless. Yarrrrgh! So here be a mighty fine example of a flawless emerald. 

Shiki held up a small emerald that was a deep sea green. Shiki pointed it towards the camera. Notice how the level of enchantment of this gem seems to simply glow under the light of the camera? Thats because this emerald has been treated with a special oil bath that makes the emerald appear to glow underneath the light

This is pretty commonly accepted in the gem trade. But if an emerald were to look like this without a oil bath it would be much more expensive.

Ahoooooy maties. This one right here is a real beauty. This right here is a bright diamond. Diamonds are the hardest naturally occurring substances on the planet. That being said most diamonds are garbage grade industrial crap. To actually find a valuable gem stone these day and ages take a long time to actually make the gem something worth putting into jewelry. 

The color most often connected to royalty, wisdom, and prestige. Fancy blue diamonds are quite valuable and often considered to be extreme rarities, even among other fancy colors. Shiki pulled a glowing sapphire and set it down on a small pillow in front of the camera. Welcome back maties to this next adventure of discovering the valuable booty of this world. Today we are going to be talking about the most glorious gem that represents the spirit of the sea in general. Shiki held up the sapphire. Shiki rotated it in the light so that it was glowing brilliantly underneath the spot light.

Shiki rotated it to try and get a feeling for the specific nature of the gem. One of the things very few people know about the sapphire was that it was also the exact same physical make up out of a ruby gemstone. The mineral make up was exactly the same of a normal sapphire in terms of hardness and luster. But certain qualities of them are obviously different. 

Shiki held the sapphire up to the camera. There are certain parts of the sapphire that have different levels of color in them. These colors are what differentiates them.

Shiki got back into his bag of gems and pulled out several large purple gems. These gems were a range of several different colors and all shared similar qualities but differed along the lines of clarity and pricing range. Shiki smiled as he held the bright gem up to his eyes. There in front of him were some of the more common gem stones but no less beautiful then the other gems out in front of him. 

These beauties right here are opals. They are quite valuable but not quite as valuable as some of the other gems. This is due to the fact that they are much more brittle then your average gemstone. Opals are more like glass and when struck hard enough they can be cracked and destroyed. You can tell the general price of an opal based on the clarity of the gem as well as the size.

This one right here is worth about 4000 ryo. Shiki said as he held up the bright purple stone. It has a few impurities along the edges we can fix up to get those numbers up.

Looking at this opal it is really easy to tell just how valuable it is based on the structure of its composition. Like... think of a wall of glass. When you are making a window you are looking for the same kind of look you would like in an opal. Meaning that you really don't want any large cracks. Any blemishes or parts of tarnish on the gem.

Furthermore on this same metaphor you also don't there to be any sort of hazyness to the gem either. The gem should be clear. The larger and thicker the gem adds more to its intrensic value but like most gems there are a lot of different factors that can change the value of the gem as well. Things like uniqueness as well as other colors in the gem impact that too. 

Shiki started putting the gems back into a velvet bag. Well ladies and gentlemen this concludes Shiki's booty hunt for the day! I hope you tune in next time.
