Three days removed from the academy, Toka found himself in a small clearing just outside the village in the leaves. His village, which really meant nothing to him, but he knew it should. This existential inner monologue regarding loyalty had no place on the training ground, however. His uncle thought he could benefit from a rigorous outdoor activity, as most of his time this past week had been taken up by final exams and left little time for REAL education. His uncle had therefore given him a scroll, a day's lunch, and sent him on his way. Toka unclasped the object and rolled it open upon the ground in front of him.
"Hyoukeibi no Jutsu. I see." Toka read the description and understood his uncle's intention in Toka learning it. His current varied move set was severely lacking in defense, and though he had acquired the Ice release skill, he had no Jutsu to speak of in the way of Ice. "Understood, uncle."
The Shinobi prepared himself for training, taking off his pack and letting it be by a tree. He left his short sword strapped horizontally acrossed his lower back. He stood rigidly in the middle of his training area, about a hundred yards in diameter. He committed the handseals to memory, and pulled them from his brain. Performing them with a swift purpose he spoke:
"Ice Release: Ice Guard!" He spoke with a purpose, and the air around him grew chilled. He could feel his chakra affecting the world around him, but alas, the most his efforts provided him was a small ring of frost in the grass at his feet. The chakra was obeying his commands, but it was his will that was fuzzy. For another hour he stayed glued to his spot, performing the handseals and commanding his chakra to protect him with a sphere of ice. To little avail. After this amount of time he had succeeded in only piling up a sloppy wall of ice stacked upon ice upon ice. It didn't accomplish much, and wouldn't stop much of anything.
"Damn." He said, rotating his head to view his barely one and a half foot creation. His brow furrowed ever so slightly, and if his uncle were here now he would laugh. Toka was getting frustrated. He pulled his sword from its sheathe, and promptly tossed it about ten yards into the air. His eyes snapped forward and he performed his handseals with the same swiftness he had demonstrated before. For a split second nothing happened. The sword fell towards him, and his heart skipped a beat as he thought he might fail. Rather than moving from his spot he willed himself to stay put. His body reacted to his endorphins, and he began to feel shifty and tense all in a matter of two seconds. He strained his body to porject it's chakra where it needed to be. In a flash of frigid air and a gleam of refracted light, ice formed a sphere around the ninja seemingly out of nowhere. In it's top, was lodged Toka's short sword. The wall had actually formed AROUND the sword's hilt, and stopped it's descent just an inch above Toka's head. He looked around his newest creation, and saw how imperfect it was. Riddled with cracks, perspiration where the sun had already started to melt the ice, and overall very brittle. Toka threw a sideways kick at his icy dwelling and caused it to shatter. He caught his sword as it fell and replaced it within it's sheathe. Anyone watching attentively might actually catch a sigh of relief escape his lips.
"The Ice Guard is supposed to be able to protect me from two D rank Jutsu, and I could barely stop a falling blade. Well, progress is progress." He formed his handseals again, almost immediately attempting to fill the gaps with more chakra. Another sphere of ice formed around him, yet still not up to par. Toka formed a different set of handseals from within his icy prison. "Wind Release: Needles of Wind." Toka felt a slight pressure as the air within the shield obeyed his will. Invisible senbon of chakra and wind tore the shield apart without difficulty, and had enough energy to strip the bark from a nearby tree directly in front of Toka. He repeated this strategy for at least another hour. By this time now he was having difficulty breaking through the ice on the first try, and the three he had buffeted had a large chunk taken out of it. He kept grinding out his technique for several hours until twilight had it's hold on the sky. He had not touched his lunch, and was breathing heavily in the same spot staring hard at the same tree.
However, he broke his cycle of Jutsu this time. "Air Needles." He spoke gravely. This time, with no ice to stop it's destruction, the needles of wind tore what was leftover of the strong oak asunder, and it began to fall. Towards Toka no less. The shinobi's face hardened even more, his eyebrows became angry, and he willed his chakra to obey his command. To protect him. The air around him shimmered and reacted violently. It swirled, and the temperature dropped violently. A polished orb of glassy ice, in the middle of which Toka's form could be clearly viewed, appeared around him. The tree fell menacingly towards him, but he refused to move. It made contact with the ice, and the snapping of wood was the only sound. The hulking log rolled aside, and Toka was left unharmed. He released his jutsu and it crumbled. He gave a small smile to himself, and walked to grab his bag where he left it.
