Another great journey

As Shiki looked at all of his belongings he was leaving behind. He felt a strange, hollow, sensation build up in his body. He looked at the two large green duffel bags that now held everything that he would need for the next year. He sighed and ran his fingers across the coarse green bags. They were filled with nothing but the absolute essentials, life saving equipment, survival tools as well as anything else a young war fighter might need. He walked over to a small pond in the center of the forested clearing. After a brief moment examining his reflection he couldn't help but notice he was frowning.
Shiki walked backed over to his bags and sat down leaning against them. It would be just a little while longer now before he would be leaving. The war with the gale empire was stretching on and the war effort needed his assistance. Shiki leaving to join the war was inevitable. He was a soldier at heart. One who had spent his life time training his mind, body and spirit to fight. But that didn't mean he wasn't going to miss his life outside the war. Shiki raised his hand up and felt the scar across his face. War really does put things into perspective.
Suddenly everything seemed to have the real potential of becoming the last time. His last thanksgiving, his last winter festival, his last time out drinking, his last kiss, his last time he embraced a woman. Everything had an air of finality to it. For someone who spends most their life pretending they are 7ft tall and indestructible confronting your own mortality was a earth shattering event. Shiki was beyond nervous. He had done everything he could to make sure that he was prepared for this moment. He just hoped it would be enough.
Shiki got where he was today by the exertions of his mentors and his instructors. Many of whom had gave their very lives in dedication to Kumogakure. Shiki saw himself as a continuation of their legacy. Every ounce of effort that they had poured into him he would need to work that much harder to prove that their lessons and sacrifices weren't for nothing. He needed to be strong because they were strong for him. He needed to be strong because there were going to be others depending on him.
Shiki wouldn't let them down either. If something happened to them it wouldn't be because he hadn't done his part. Shiki would use all of his training and conditioning to bring as many people home safely as he could. If need be Shiki was ready to risk his life to bring them home. Shiki sighed as he looked down at his gear once more. To his side hung his Trusty blade Thanatos. The amethyst gemstone in its pommel seemed to gleam cheerfully as the light seemed to catch it. Shiki's mind wandered to sad thoughts as he wrapped his fingers around the sheath.
He hadn't seen Loki since the harvest moon festival. The idea of not being able to say goodbye would drive him crazy in the months to come. Shiki flicked Thanatos out of its sheath by just a few inches. As he admired the master worked item that Loki made him it brought a small smile to his face. "Even out alone in the battlefield I'll have your assistance." Shiki let the blade fall back into its sheath. Shiki watched as the soft fog bank slowly started to disperse. The sun was beginning to rise. Shiki grabbed his bags and hoisted them onto his back. Shiki took one look back at the caldera town and smiled as the sun began to crest outlining the mountains of his home.
Shiki felt reached up and wiped the moisture from his face. He forced a small smile and turned his back on his village and took the first steps of his journey towards the war. He smiled when he saw his two direwolves and their crystal collars emerge from the nearby woodline. "Lets go you two. We got a date with destiny."
As Shiki moved through the trail towards the war he saw a pair of foot prints in the dirt in front of him. Maybe it was just his sentimental mind but Shiki liked to think these were the foot prints of his heroes. That these worn old footprints in the dirt was the remanence of those brave men and women that he would soon be joining in the conflict. Shiki was going to do everything he could to make sure that he continued to prove himself and earn his place among such great heroes.
