When asked to describe Kaori, nearly everyone would agree her most striking feature is a head of waist-length, straight lime hair. Bangs cover her forehead, helping to frame a face that clearly avoids the sun. Her eyes are almond-shaped and amber-colored, not unlike a cat, with lashes that benefit from mascara and a curl. In everyday conversation her face and eyes easily display her emotions, but she's adept at adopting a blank expression when on a job. Her lips are average size, the bottom slightly more plump than the top, with a gentle cupid's bow.
Standing at 168 cm, she is of average height, with a lean but feminine build. Kaori makes a point to keep a straight posture, sometimes to the detriment of looking uptight to an outsider. Her face and legs are without imperfections; even as teenager she was not prone to getting acne. However, there are a plethora of tiny scars on her fingertips from practicing throwing kunai, and a long, jagged scar on her forearm from blocking an attack years ago. Kaori is already pale, so these are not apparent without close scrutiny. Finally, she has a small, round mole next to her belly button, and one on the left side of her throat.
She is not very creative when it comes to clothing, and certainly wouldn't describe herself as fashionable. Casually, Kaori prefers jeans, a t-shirt or fitted shirt, and ballet flats. For a medical situation, in addition to her white lab coat she wears a fitted blouse, slim dress pants or a skirt with pantyhose, and closed-toe ballet flats. Finally, on a mission outside the hospital she swaps in tall boots and adds a utility belt and cloak.

aloof (-) calculating (-) insecure (-) morbid (-) reserved (-) vindictive
As a shinobi, one has to balance open kindness with the real possibility that trust can get you killed. Kaori has taken the advice to heart, partly due to past experiences and partly due to her innate personality. Therefore, it is necessary to describe both sides of the coin: the woman her loved ones know and the one she presents to strangers. To friends, she is an intensely loyal, generous, and empathetic paragon of the medical profession. She sometimes helps others even when it would hurt herself, physically, financially, and emotionally. Losing someone she cares for is frightening to her, so Kaori tends to be anxious and overly careful. For example, she always checks that the stove has been turned off before going to bed, and not doing so would make her nervous. This translates to a benefit on the battlefield, wherein she insists on having a tactical plan prepared. Events that deviate from the course of her plans used to be stressful, but through constant practice she learned to be calm and rational even then.
Strangers often develop negative first impressions of Kaori; they think she is either standoffish or judgmental of them, where in reality she is quiet and analyzing the situation. It would be accurate to say that in casual encounters, she's a bit awkward. On the job there is a routine that can be followed, questions to be asked that don't involve her personal life - not so at the local bar. She loves to listen to people talk, but finds it difficult to reciprocate unless she's known them for a while. While she has a policy of not lying to loved ones, she has no qualms with lying to others if the outcome seems more favorable than being honest. Similarly, she would never kill someone without being convinced it was the right choice to make, either to protect her village, friends, or herself. If a battle can be settled without excess bloodshed, she advocates for that option.
There are some nuanced pieces of her personality that do not readily fit in to either category. Kaori would do nearly anything for her husband, Takeshi, even if it normally goes against her moral code. Due in part to her brother's untimely death, she leans on Takeshi for validation and affection, and is rather dependent on him. She tries to hide this in public, and indeed, in the workforce she is a strong leader with no qualms speaking her mind. Secretly, Kaori is also a bit jealous and vindictive. When other women pay too much attention to Takeshi in a way that can be interpreted as flirting, and has to stop herself from reminding them who is wife is. Anyone that slights her without what she sees as a good reason get added to her bad list, and after a few infractions she will no longer consider them trustworthy allies. She has never acted out a plot of revenge, but will not hesitate to cut that person from her life.

Tachibana Kaori (née Fujita) is the second-born child of two former Konohagakure shinobi. Her parents, Sohryu and Riou, chose to retire in middle age so that they could start a family without worrying about their own mortality. They wanted to give their children the opportunity to return to the village if the shinobi lifestyle sounded tempting to them, and to that end chose to immigrate to Yu no Kuni. Here her brother Kazuki was born, and a year later, Kaori joined him. Her early life was relatively uneventful; in fact, it was somewhat idyllic, spent playing with her brother in the lush forests and cool creeks. People who saw them often mistook them for twins because of their close relationship and similar appearance. She loved him more than anyone in the world.
Like most children, Kaori and Kazuki were enthralled with their parents' stories of Konoha and dreamed of the day they could follow in their footsteps. However, Kazuki was unwilling to leave her behind for a year, so he waited until she turned eight for both of them to apply to the academy. Family friends offered to host the two of them until they could support themselves, because ultimately their parents chose to remain in Yu no Kuni, where they continue to live to the present day. The academy itself was as fun as the siblings expected it to be; Kaori found she had a natural aptitude for chakra control, whereas Kazuki preferred Taijutsu. They graduated together after three years of dedicated training, with plenty of friends (and some enemies) to write home about.
Unfortunately, a life is seldom without heartache, especially so for a person who is training to hunt and kill. Kaori was neither the first nor the last to lose a loved one, but the circumstances surrounding her brother's death would end up shaping the rest of her life. Would it be easier to accept a death if it was accidental? Could vengeance against a murderer relieve the pain? On what was supposed to be a routine team mission, Kaori, Kazuki, and his other best friend Takeshi were ambushed by enemy shinobi. It shouldn't have happened. Their sensei was nowhere to be found; there was no warning. Desperately they tried to run, only to face misfortune at every turn. Kazuki was gravely wounded, although even now she cannot pinpoint the exact source. If they had only been closer to the village they could have saved him, but it was not meant to be. Takeshi held her as they cried.
Kaori could never forgive herself for letting Kazuki die. She withdrew into her shell, so depressed that she considered abandoning Konoha to go back to mother and father. Their pain and presumed disappointed kept her from following that path; she hasn't visited them since the funeral, even now. Eventually, the depression subsided long enough for her to realize ruining her own life would never bring Kazuki back. Instead, she vowed to never let another person die when that death could possibly be prevented. She walked the path of a medical shinobi. When the fog of grief lifted, she found that Takeshi was still there by her side. Perhaps in their joined experiences they could forge something better for the future.
