"It is hard to believe that the War is over."
A voice, low and muffled and hardened just past snarling half-coughs abruptly, parts the long silence with - slight, and aware of itself - disappointment, or, rapture. A voice between emotions. It belongs to the godling Moon. His Common is near perfect. He is nearly seven feet now, horned, three-eyed, an immortal alien brat in the coat of a Kage. The creature standing before him says:
"You wanted it to last longer, Kage-sama?"
Moon laughs, but nothing about its noise is happy. A beat. He answers;
"I wanted it to endlastforevernullifywhatwhatwhatisthiskillgraniteflowerskillKILLseverthrottlecarv--"
"..."
Moon strains against his restraints. The creature's voice, though deeper than the young Mizukage's, is far more capable of sadness, sounds, sincerely, sure of the despair its response truly signifies - cracks, overcome - but answers the babble back:
".. that's what I was afraid you'd say., Kage-sama."
In the cave this work was hidden, but, the creature moved closer to Moon, outstretched too many arms with too many digits, listening to the Leader of the HYOBE Rebellion speak in bursts of nonsense. Sometimes the former Kage would shift, changing form entirely, become a short woman or an emaciated elderly man or a bell or a tendril covered in spider webs pulling giant maggots apart; a snake, a talking balloon, an oil lamp. The creature spoke to Moon as it stood at the mouth of a cavernous pit horizontally dug beneath the fog surface of Kirigakure. Machines of unknown function adapted glowing manacles that Moon's changes could not outwit. He settled a bit. The creature spoke to Moon;
"You know what I have to do now, right Kage-sama? Nobody else could, thats why they sent me. You know, Kage-sama. You know how it is--did you...would you know, Kage-sama? Would you have a plan to stop me if you were coherent. Ka---?!"
Moon screamed obscenities, then a poem about toys in reply, crying. He became a wolf with human ears for a head a few seconds later . The creature says, eyeing the former Mizukage with respect, but speaking to itself:
"I bet you would. You seemed like that kind of person before. I think you were a good person, to have been a little god thing and all."
The creature leans closer to the entrance of the cave, and then in a blurred lunge is grappling the restrained Moon with ten contorted limbs. It breathes in Moon's face, strokes his head that is now a beetle and a gray daisy and then, suddenly, just a blob of featureless jelly in the creature's fifth six-fingered hand. Whispers:
"I'm sorry, I...I have to eat you now, Kage-sama."
Moon smiles at the creature. Screeches at it;
"Kuhaia-san, I was just thinking the same thing!"
The creature touches the cave's rearmost wall once it has filled its stomach, speaks a concussive wave of knocking patterns that collapse the entire structure around it only to rise through the broken stone roof in a flurry of enormous wings. Its outline across the quiet night is an abomination, arms like a bizarre insect, eyes glassing the blackness. It flies away. Onto a swathe of hazy skyways. Into the Mist.
