Upon reaching the oasis, one of the first things he noticed was the actual lack of animal life. On one hand, it made a lot of sense due to the fact that his book stated that most wildlife in the desert was nocturnal. On the other hand, the fact that a place like this had vegetation, shade and fresh water made him think that some of the animals might have actually adapted to it a bit. Slowly approaching it, he saw some of the plants he had encountered in his book, as well as some he had seen in pictures but had not actually been reading up on all that much.
Setting foot deeper into the oasis itself, he kept his eyes and ears open so that he would be alerted to any kind of danger he might encounter. While it might be argued that a Shinobi had little to worry about in such a place, it would be arrogant to assume that there wouldn't possibly be other people that might have been drawn to such a place as a means of getting some fresh water and finding food after a long walk through the hot sands. That, and there were plenty of smaller threats that happened to be highly venomous and could easily kill him within minutes.
Keeping his eyes open for any of the tell-tale signs in the sand and vegetation, as well as listening for the rattling of tails that gave away the fact that a resident snake felt threatened by his presence. It was however the louder rustling within the shrubbery that gave away a small party of people that were scrounging for food and trying to get enough firewood so they could start a fire that might keep them warm at night. Not spotting any headbands, it seemed highly unlikely that these people were Shinobi from the Sand, which made them into potential outsiders, and therefore dangerous.
