If he could get this reconstructed bomb to go off, it meant that he had learned enough about the thing to figure out how to properly rig up a trap, as well as knowing how to take one apart without it blowing up in his face. Making sure that the wire was attached properly, he attached the charge to one of the two stones before slowly unraveling the spool of wire that connected the two pieces. When he was done, he attached the trigger mechanism to the other stone being just a few meters removed from the first. Taking his sweet time attaching the trigger, he knew that dealing with that thing was likely more dangerous than handling the charge.

If he messed up there or was a bit too violent with placing the setup, the charge would go off. Luckily for him, he hadn't reattached the exterior casing to the actual bomb because he wanted to see how things went when he set the bomb to blow. That, and so there wouldn't be any shrapnel flying his way, which was really the only thing that would allow him to look at the whole show from a safe distance. With his Kunai in hand, he retreated to a spot roughly five meters away from the explosive. Given the fact that his sight was quite well developed, he would clearly be able to see things go down from there.

Aiming his Kunai at the base of the trigger mechanism, he tossed it into the stone and severed the wire where it was connected, thus sending a tremor down towards the bomb caused by the wire no longer pulling the explosive off of the contact point. When it did, the explosive instantly went off with a loud bang. Making a short leap into the air, Hamura was quite pleased with himself as he had managed to do this all on his own. Going back to the blast zone in order to reclaim all of the leftover pieces, he didn't want to litter and maybe make the villagers that heard it think there was a fight going on.

If the guards were to come out to confirm where the blast came from, he did not want them getting the wrong idea. Besides, he had learned quite a few months ago that leaving weaponry or remnants of battle behind wasn't good for the wildlife as it could injure itself on it. While the sands really did not hold all that much of it, especially this close to the village, he did not want to risk being the cause of an innocent animal being hurt. Placing all of the assembled pieces into the torn duffle bag, he started making his way back over to the village, which was a good thing really.

As it got darker, it wouldn't be long before the temperature in the desert would drop to the point where it wouldn't be pleasant walking around in his summer clothing. It was a good thing that he was close to the village and had brought his cloak, just in case he wanted to stay out for just a bit longer than he had initially planned. After a fifteen minute walk, he returned to the village and tossed the tattered duffle bag along with the shrapnel, broken wire and shattered pieces of machinery into the nearest public trash can as he had no further use for it himself. Besides, it was better off in the trash than out in the desert. With the clean-ups in order, the young Shinobi returned to his temporary residence in the attic room of a local hotel.

While it sounded dark and inhospitable, Hamura really did not need all that much in order to settle in properly. He had a table where he could eat his food and read his books, a clean bed, a window overlooking a large portion of the village, a working kitchen and sink, as well as a bathroom and a somewhat outdated bathtub. Still, the room was clean and did not cost him much at all due to most other guests feeling too good for such a spot due to the fact that all natural light came in through a single window that barely lit up the place. But it didn't really matter to him, for it was his home until he managed to get a place of his own.

That night, Hamura was having trouble sleeping, though not due to the regular causes. This time, it wasn't because of troubling nightmares or because he was having trouble adjusting to the new village, but because of what was waiting for him down the line. It wouldn't be long before the Chuunin exams were upon him, at which point he would likely be matched against other Shinobi who had managed to fill out the requirements. While he was certain that most of the people there were beneath him, what bothered him was that there would be a select group that was beyond what he was capable of.

The closer the exams came, the more it bothered him that, while he had managed to do a lot in a year, more than most would likely be capable of in such a small window of time, there were plenty who had been a Shinobi for years and had more experience than Hamura did right now. More so, the fact that they were older meant that they were physically stronger than he was, which meant that he would have to figure out a way to keep this from becoming a factor that might prove to become his undoing. And so, he kept pondering as he remained flat on top of his sheets.

The more he thought about it, the more it felt like there was really no answer to the question, considering there were too many things that needed to be factored into the equation. If he had any files on the people he was to be dealing with, he could have set up an accurate plan on how to deal with them and prepare accordingly. But since there were no such documents to work with, all he had to go on was what he had and could do, as well as building those up to higher levels. And one thing was always going to be useful no matter where it was being used, and that was subtlety.

Many might focus on their strength in battle and their ability to blow things up, though that seemed too simple for someone like himself. Even though he knew quite a few fairly devastating techniques, his choice went to the less flashy ones that were often a bit more useful in a skirmish. The thing about powerful jutsu was that they destroyed a lot in their wake and were very flashy, allowing anyone to just track them down and turn the entire place into a war zone in a matter of minutes. Especially during an exam in which one just wanted to pass, drawing unwanted attention was not on the menu.

(Part 5)

A couple of months ago, Hamura had first begun practicing his ability to hide and move mostly unseen by others when a pack of wolves started hunting him. At the time, he had come to figure out that there was more to stealth than just moving quietly and avoiding detection. When chased by a pack of animals that used scent, sight and hearing, it simply wasn't going to be enough. While he ran, he had relied on his surroundings to create a diversion while using a pool of water as a means of washing away most of his scent while using the distraction in order to move along and hide elsewhere.

Within a country such as the land of Wind, hiding in trees was not really something he could do, just like how there was really no possibility of there ever being a river or creek he could leap into in order to wash off his scent. Down here in this corner of the world, all there was, was sand. As much as he thought about it, there was little to nothing he liked about the sand. It itched whenever it got into his clothes, was nearly impossible to clean out of his back pack as there always seemed to be some hiding somewhere when he cleaned it, only to pop up when he thought he was done.

Luckily for him, he had been granted a cloak that allowed him to move mostly unseen through most areas of the world, even when there was little shelter to work with. While it was highly useful, at the end of the day, it was still but a tool, and a tool was really only as good as the person wielding, or in this case, the person wearing it. This meant that as much as he wanted to rely on it, he couldn't. He needed to put in the work and train himself so that his own skill would grow, in turn making his cloak that much more useful. Because that was how things like these were supposed to be working, not the other way around.

Since there was still much of the village he hadn't explored yet, he had decided to leave his cloak at home and head on out during night time. Even though it'd be cold without it during the desert nights, the amount of time he was spending out there was entirely up to him, so he could head back to his room whenever he felt like enough was enough. And just like that, he crawled out through his window a couple of hours later and went out into the village. During the time between going out and making his plan, he had actually thought up something he wanted to be doing while going out.

There was a local locksmith that he wanted to pay a visit to, but not so he could buy some fancy locks. No, the plan was to head over there when he had been creeping around the village for a while so he could snatch a few locks he would get to tinker with by the time he returned to his room. Even though he would obviously return them the very next morning, likely before anyone would have even missed them to begin with, part of what made the exercise interesting was seeing whether he could lift it from the shop without being seen and caught.

First though, he went about doing some exercises within the streets. Hiding in alleys, he would make a sound by tossing a small pebble in his general direction before hiding to see if the person that came to see what had made the sound could actually find him or not. While it was nowhere near as hard as hiding from a pack of wolves that managed to coordinate and hunt together, he also didn't have a forest filled with hiding places and the like to work with. If nothing else, things like these forced him to get more creative with his surroundings, and that was a very Black Ops thing to do.

To improve, adapt and overcome was not only the Shinobi way, it was the way of a special kind of Shinobi that was used to taking care of problems on their own and more or less govern themselves for the most part as well. And seeing as how Hamura had always aspired to be the kind of Shinobi that handled his own problems, he really wouldn't need to change all that much. Continuously hiding himself after drawing attention to him, he wasn't all that amazed that no one managed to find him when even a wolf couldn't. Still, training was training, and he was glad that he could do so even within the confines of the village.

Part of him wondered if this was the kind of stuff that gave rise to folklore, wild tales about some kind of creature drawing people to it, only to disappear once they get close. He had heard wilder tales of yōkai shaped like human heads falling from trees and eating the crushed remains of the people they fell on or creatures that came into the house to lick away the mold and leave, so it wasn't much of a stretch. On that note, he stopped doing it after about half an hour of practice because he did not want to be the cause of startling rumors that made people afraid of walking through dark alleys at night.

Smirking a bit at the thought of his legacy being that of a bit of folklore, he left the alley and started moving into the direction of the locksmith. Even though he had never been to a place like that before, he knew what was to be found there. Locks, obviously, though not just new locks that could be purchased by one and all, but also broken locks that were brought in need of fixing and locks that had just been fixed and awaited the owner to pick it up. By the time he arrived, he figured that he would need to have a look into those things when he entered the place.
