Character Depth
Personality
Valkyrie has a theory that even the kindest and holiest of vegan monks have a guy in a village somewhere who thinks they are a bitch. Valkyrie has many of these people, she calls it an unfortunate mixture of confusion and jealousy, whereas most people call it well founded hate. It is easy to see how and why so many people hate her so easily, many of them are hardworking folk or teacher left to deal with the the trail of harassed citizens she leaves in her curiosity fueled wake. The way she sees it, all fun and games as long as no one is hurt...well as long as no one good is hurt. Her own survival means perplexingly less to her than her well being and comfort, more than willing to trade a knife for a bed or use her healing powers for her next meal. Often pretending to not care what people think of her in that early onset teenager mood but eventually swung over by loneliness, she will of course then spend the next day running after the person she did wrong.
Having been raised by herself in an adventurous lifestyle she often finds himself making bad choices for nonsense reasons, as if a sense of embedded adventure has led her to assume everything and everyone like her and want to either listen to her or tell her their life story. An example of which is her infamous clingyness, this is born of the Hozuki sense of adventure, wanting to join anyone willing to tolerate her for more than a day on their adventures but ultimately annoying them. There are two sides to this coin, the lighter side is that she can fight it and channel these urges to abuse people’s attention into her music and training, falling into a sulk-like state when ignored or even violent tendencies towards negative feedback. The other side of the coin is a lot darker, the side that sees a group of bandits and wishes for their deaths. Then remembers that crime pays and gets annoyed that she has to punish them herself.
Her penchant for raising cain has led her into a lot of trouble at the academy and on missions, alienating a lot of the teachers and higher ranking Ninja's from helping her. She sees this as something that could not be avoided, her bloodlimit makes her naturally curious and her singing habits distract her quickly making for long and chaotically interesting results. An example of this would be on her first exploration off of the island in an Academy group where her loud singing got the entire group kicked out of a traditional parade when she tried to join in the melody. Repetition of these situations have made her feel like quite an outsider, giving her trust issues that play havoc juxtaposition with her natural curiosity. In truth, you can never be quite sure what mood you will catch her in, only her end goal of stories of adventure or adventure themselves can be guaranteed; though when going on adventures, you can be certain of her resolve, a challenge is not to be shirked from.
Valyrie does not have a progression of temper, her snapping point is fairly high and usually involves either being ignored or talking to someone being purposefully creepy or stupid. When she does eventually snap it comes sudden and it comes fast with enough control to not hit the person in question but woe betide upon nearby objects. When she fights she tends to stay as calm as she can, she knows that healing is a sought after gift in many towns and groups and can respect her own importance in a fight. To lose her head in a fight could be to lose the fight, a friend or even her own life if she is not in the game enough to concentrate and heal. Curiously enough, she has the same mindset in her singing, knowing/assuming at all times that someone is listening into her angelic tunes and if she messes up the note that the spell will be broken. She is determined to never be laughed at for her talents again.
Appearance
Face: Very round, full face that makes her seem slightly alien when paired with her skin, small and shallow nose that melts seamlessly into her face at the sides and small indents for ears, long neck that curves upwards into her head, completely removing any chin and a small very circular mouth that moves from circle to sideways oval when talking, disappearing completely when closed.
Eyes: Wide and wild as if they want to see everything but have already seen horrors, though typically half closed when singing, especially when brushing her hair. A deep purple but innocent reactions to shocking events, a reaction she plays on to lower peoples defenses.
Hair: Long, slightly curled and smooth, going halfway down her back and adorned with various beads and bands that mean things to the Hozuki. Usually a shimmering white color that she is fond of as it draws the attention she craves and makes her seem almost ethereal but that changes suddenly and often drastically depending on her mood.
Skin: Light Blue and almost entirely transparent with ripples along the surface when she talks, sings or moves which creates a sun glitter on surfaces near her. She often spends hours on sunny days just watching these reflections and singing her heart to their movements.
Body Shape: Thin in form but made strong by her chakra, sudden yet graceful in her movements, as if the air itself were water that she is gliding through. She only has two toes to speak of as she wears sandals and only needs the one big toe on each feet to keep them on.
Nucleus: A dark floating shape around 8 cubic inches floating around where the human heart would be located.
Clothes: Green tank top that is slightly too large for her as it was her brothers, grey shorts and brown sandals.
Voice: A slight warble as if she was underwater and a musical sing-song lilt to her sentences that come into full effect when she sings. Her singing voice is usually quiet if with others but can still be appreciated as a sweet, perfectly pitched tone that makes her form ripple and her hair change depending on how loudly she sings.
Background
THE HOME YEARS
"Children are told they can be anything..."
Valkyrie was born to a poor family, no rights, no land, no money and no brains. Her mother was a tailor and her father was a busker and in a scantily dressed hard to reach community this meant money was going out a lot faster than it was coming in. She was too young to understand it at the time, too young to understand why her father would leave for days at a time, too young to understand that poverty was a thing when her entire world was in one house. This was incredibly unhealthy for a young Hozuki, their natural curiosity and desires for adventure caged up like that only made her feelings towards the wide world stronger. She did not know what was out there, but she wanted to, and soon she would start the academy, but with each day that grew, she saw her father less. And her mother more.
The wooden extension out of the back of the house was where she trained when old enough to throw a punch, her older and devout brother Demsu would tutor her four times a day:
8-10: Chakra Focus
11-2: TaiJutsu
3-5: Medical Jutsu
7-10: Clan Jutsu
Every other day GenJutsu would replace one of the time slots to ensure she had a solid base over every thing, her mother would watch over these lessons and nod approval at the end of each one. At each nod of her head, Demsu would imperceptibly flinch, but Valkyrie saw it, every time, and never asked why. She tended to ask a lot of questions about a lot of things, and so since she never asked about it, they both never questioned the possibility she had seen it.
THE ACADEMY
"...that they can do anything..."
Some people go to school excited. Some people go nervous or scared. Valkyrie went bloodthirsty. The intense training by her brother until this point mixed with her literal captivity had created a freshly born Hozuki personality, a child who had never seen much of this world or its people even though it was merely another part of the island. Her questions were new, her outlook was freshly piqued and she was bursting with questions she was not afraid to ask at a hundred miles an hour every single day. The other children didn't want to get to know her, but they recognized her as a threat.
The training she had received every single day gave her a massive headstart in the lessons side of the Academy, but she struggled on the theoretical sides. In written classes on the world, the countries or even their history she was almost entirely ignorant, only knowing the combat oriented lessons her brother had taught her and these were extremely specific examples. As such she was bullied, called stupid, laughed at from a distance, but never hit. She had spent her childhood venting her emotions and life into her training and now she was facing people who fought with words instead of fists and she was entirely unarmed.
THE TURNING OF TABLES
"...and go anywhere..."
Valkyrie had tried playing nice, she had tried to get along with the other kids, tried to talk, tripped over her words and retreated to her safe places to sing on her own. It didn't work, she had been met with sneers and retorts, laughs and put downs. But they had not seen what she saw coming, they did not know what approached...vengeance.
The day before her attitude improved, her brother had met her in the mornings for their ritualistic quick training session, only an hour or less on each area she focused on, but enough to keep them up to date and in her mind. He revealed he would not be free for these sessions for a couple of weeks from then, when pressed by her trademark flurry of questions he spoke the words she thought would never come.
"The competition approaches"
The competition that all Hozuki children go through, a physical tournament against her peers to prove who is the best. The original meaning is to get in touch with their ancestors and prove their strength as a race had grown. But the real meaning was competition, the children threw their lives into it, and some had lost them. And now it was her turn. The other children would have to fight on her turf, on her area of expertise, and she would show them what she could do with what they could not. And see how they like it.
FIGHT!
"...well then..."
The morning of the fight she received the news. Her father murdered by the very man he was hunting. Valkyrie wanted to say she was shocked, wanted to say she was scared or angry or even worried about her future or her family. But she felt nothing, no sorrow, no grief, no anger for the man she had never known. Every story told of him had made him out to be a drunk, and the reveal that he had all the time been some kind of Junin did not faze her. He had left them, she had seen him twice in her life and neither had been in the last five years, yet there was Demsu in the crowd, come to watch her fight in place of her father. She smiled at him, the only male role model she needed.
Then the fighting started, as usual there were the rules and the speeches and the chants, old scripts dating back to the days gone and legends of the great Sagasu. She was not listening, she was looking at her classmates out of the corner of her eyes and planning exactly where she would punch each of them. Then the bell rang, and the fun began.
She had it all planned out, the first fight she had was against this tall girl with long ginger hair, Valkyrie started singing a minute in and increased the tempo as she went for the knockout blow. Thus the theme continued, with every fight she changed the song, making up tunes on the spot as Jutsu's flew and bodies fell. She had spent years being bullied and made fun of with words she could not fight with, and now those same girls were facing her words. She was told once that sticks and stones can break your bones but words can never hurt you, they forget to point out that the sticks and stones have still broken your bones, so at the end of the day, she was a lot better at hurting.
Flight of Valkyrie
"...Maybe I will."
Demsu pulled Valkyrie through crowds of people, a piece of paper clutched in his other hand, they weaved through the stalls and sprinted all the way home. Their mother was nowhere to be seen but two bags were packed on the bed that Demsu grabbed without a word and pulled Valkyrie back out the door so fast she got whiplash. A thousand questions a minute were pouring out of her mouth so fast they waxed together a lyrical but empty befuddlement as each one was met with a shake of the head. Crowds had gathered in the distance, a mixture of classmates and randoms, Valkyrie had no news to give them, only a confused expression and a single nod goodbye. Not that she felt they deserved much more, but she deserved some answers.
As they reached the shore, several Junin were waiting nearby and talking to some traders, money exchanged hands and they were bundled on board. As they got on Demsu pushed her ahead and she was grabbed by rough merchant hands and pulled below decks, through the gaps in the hull she was able to make out Demsu and his voice drifting lightly on the winds.
"...not safe for the island...I will...eventually..."
Their conversation stopped with a handshake and a farewell, then Demsu joined her below decks where she had taken up a light melody to emphasis each rock of the boat. The song was full of questions, of her confusion and her hate, her anger and her sadness. Demsu listened but gave no awnsers, the song contained no words, but he felt her emotions, and offered nothing. Honestly, she did not care. For most of her life she had been shut inside, shut outside, told to shut up, and finally shut others up. And now she was free, she smelt the salt in the air, wiggled her toes in the leaked water and felt freedom for the first time in her life. She felt adventure.
