Having gotten quite good with her force techniques, and still waiting on Kikkai, Valerys decided that she could do some training in the meantime. She went to the combat training room that she herself had constructed and saw that there were only a few other students. Most of them were practicing ninjutsu as well, so Valerys thought that this might be a good space for her to get some work done. She stood over on the left side of the room and started running her chakra throughout her body, moving it down her arms and into her fingertips – feeling the warm sensation of physical and mental energy merging in her body. Suddenly she started changing this energy into force chakra, which she had become more adept at with each passing day. Suddenly her fingers were surrounded in an undescribable force – one that she often used to hit walls and cause close-combat damage – but not today. Today she was going to make it into a long-range ram.

The chakra began to build up at the tips of her fingers in a dense, solid mass that grew bigger and bigger. Valerys pushed more of her chakra into the creation until it felt like her hands were going to drop to the ground. She looked up at the wall across from her and reached out her hands – sending the chakra out five meters away. As the force energy grew longer, it lost some of its power, and when it hit the wall it just left a few small marks. Valerys huffed, knowing that she hadn’t even come close to mastering the technique, and looked across the room to see Corvus training by himself as well. She was a little nervous about speaking to him, since the last time they’d met she played a cruel prank on him with a genjutsu, but she gave up her pride and started to walk over to him. “Hey Corvus,” she said, and he looked at her a little afraid. But she needed him to help her learn this technique – he was better at ninjutsu than she was after all.

He was too afraid to turn her down and Corvus watched as Valerys showed him what she was able to do so far. Once again she built up the chakra in her arms and down into her hands, then funneled it around herself with a massive density. The chakra built up, layer after layer, around her body until she unleashed it in a sudden burst toward one of the targets. The force energy was barely enough to knock it over from a distance of five meters. “See it isn’t enough,” Valerys complained and Corvus studied her training. “When you release the chakra from your hands,” Corvus said, “It is too spread out, you need to focus your concentration more on the target and send all of the chakra in that direction at one time – in one spot.” Valerys tried the trick, building up the force energy inside of her body once more. It surprised her how good she had gotten with these techniques in such a short time, but that was what she had come to expect from Senpu Dojo.

As her mind concentrated on all of the force energy that was congealing around her fingers, the power became more dense until it was like a heavy cloud that was surrounding her hands. Valerys raised her head and pointed her hands out toward the target five meters away and expelled the force chakra from her hands. Unlike last time however, and at Corvus’ suggestion, she focused on the force chakra as if it were a line rather than a spread out attack – and, indeed, it seemed to work. The force energy ran into the target all at once and in one spot, rather than being a scattered effect, and suddenly pushed it over with great force. “Good job, Corvus! You’ll definitely be helping me with this technique from here on out.” Corvus looked a bit uneasy when she said this, but knew better than to complain and the two of them began working together on their training. While he was memorizing some handseals for some ninjutsu, or some such work, she started practicing with her Force Ram technique once more.

Chakra was getting faster at running throughout her arms, almost instantly turning into force energy as it reached the palms of her hands and radiated outwards. Valerys made sure to concentrate as closely as possible on the signs of her body to tell how much chakra was being contained in her aura. The technique she was learning would need two things – one enough chakra to cause a devastating attack, and two enough distance to make it of value. She would have to concentrate in order to hold the immense amount of chakra, while at the same time send that chakra forward as a contained unit. She sighed and kept running the chakra into her palms, not stopping until she felt the heavy and familiar deadweight around her wrists as the force chakra started to blend. When her hands were so heavy that she could barely lift them, Valerys looked at her aura and could almost see the chakra floating around her like clear heatwaves off a fire.

In order to keep all of the force chakra contained while it moved forward, Valerys had to concentrate on a very direct line from herself to the target – which was now ten meters away instead of five. She kept strict attention on her breath work in order to maintain the energy as it began to leave her hands. Such dense chakra was hard to keep in the air and moved at a slow rate, but Valerys kept her focus and slowly the force chakra was beginning to move the distance. But after about five meters the chakra dissipated, and Valerys watched with disappointment. “Guess you’ll have to keep trying,” Corvus said a bit too snide, and Valerys scared him off. For a while she trained alone, running the jutsu throughout her body several times but never making it quite all the way to the target. She was caught up in her training when a familiar voice from behind her said, “So there you are…”

It was none other than Kikkai Eien, the girl that she had known since she was young and had been waiting here at the dojo to meet up with after recruiting her in the Hitofuki. “It’s good to see you again,” Valerys said, “And at such a perfect timing. I’m just finishing up a jutsu called the Force Ram. Would you help me?” Kikkai brushed some of her violet hair out of her face and said, “Well, you know taijutsu is my specialty but I’ll give it a go.” Kikkai stood by and watched as Valerys started to run the chakra throughout her body again, building it up the same way as the previous times in her fingertips. When enough chakra had condensed there, she focused on turning it into force energy that she could throw out and show off to Kikkai. She knew that this time she had to do better than the others, partially to show off and partially to finish learning the technique quickly so that they could move on. She faced a wall about five meters away, no longer going for distance since she wanted to show off, and was condensing all of the force energy into a dense space surrounding her hands and fingers.

Then, all of a sudden, she let out a soft grunt and sent the force chakra flying toward the wall in front of her. After training at sending it further distances, the ram covered the five meters with ease and began to solidify in the air as Valerys maintained her concentration on the attack. This time it felt even more dense than before and started to almost take on a shape as it hit the wall, unleashing all of its built up pressure and shaking the room a bit. “Sorry, sorry,” Valerys said with a chuckle to the rest of the practicioners, and looked at the crack that she had put into the wall. “Oh wow,” Kikkai said and Valerys put out her hand so she could inspect it. “Feel the power,” Valerys said and started to run even more of her chakra throughout her arms, as if she were going to use the attack again. “But I need to learn to send it out further,” Valerys explained, “And to hit a living target. And that’s where you come in.”

Kikkai was confident and eager to help, so she stood in front of Valerys at ten meters away. She didn’t want to hurt her, so Valerys made sure that she had enough control over the force energy to make it non-lethal and started going through the procedures as before. She built up the chakra in her hands and started to condense it, then unleashed it in a line as she concentrated on Kikkai at a distance. Kikkai stood in one spot and the ram went fast toward her, but started to lose steam and power as it got to about the seven meter mark. By the time it reached her, it felt like a punch in the gut – but it should have been even worse. “Not good enough,” Valerys said simply and kept working on the fundamentals. As she worked on her jutsu, Kikkai watched Valerys and the way she concentrated on the body and mind. It inspired her but she didn’t work on anything else at the moment, knowing that she needed to assist her sister. After Valerys had gone through several more rounds of molding the chakra and sending it into the distance, increasing her range, she told Kikkai that she was ready to try again.

This time Kikkai didn’t stand still but walked from side to side, making the task even more difficult for Valerys. She not only had to form the Force Ram technique as before, but now when she released it she could have to aim as well as concentrate on maintaining the density of the force chakra. She formed the force energy around her hands like before and suddenly pulled them upwards, sending the jutsu flying out. It went the ten meters and maintained its solid form, for which Valerys was grateful, but she missed Kikkai by quite a few feet. She could of course not see it, but Valerys knew from her adept control over the force chakra that the jutsu had missed. She tried once more, building up her chakra and sending it forward in one large ram-like missile, and sent it forward at Kikkai once more. She missed again and this time the force weapon dissipated like before after seven meters – a sign that Valerys was beginning to run low on energy. “I’ve only got a few good more attempts left in me,” Valerys said and knew that she needed to make each one count.

As Kikkai continued to move back and forth, Valerys started some minor breath work in order to enhance her concentration and the balance between her mind and body so that the chakra flowed throughout her unimpeded. Her hands felt heavy with the power as her eyes fixated on Kikkai’s wavering body, predicting the next movements and taking aim with her jutsu. When she was sure that she had it down, Valerys sent the force chakra forward in a straight line in almost an instant – following the precision of her own focus and concentration. It was as if the chakra were hooked up to a train line and sped the ten meters to Kikkai’s position, immediately hitting her and throwing her backwards. “Whoa,” Valerys said, a little surprised at her own strength, and walked over to help Kikkai get up but by the time she got over there Kikkai was already standing. “That was good,” Kikkai said, but Valerys knew that it wasn’t good enough. They would have to keep training, and this time at top speed. She told Kikkai to move back away and this time to run back and forth, making the task of delivering the Force Ram that much more challenging.

Kikkai did as she was told and Valerys reached deep within herself, drawing upon her own inner reserves of wisdom and meditation. It seemed that the world around her were moving a bit slower, attuned to her inhales and exhales, and that she could perceive her friend’s footwork as she ran back and forth. The force energy slowly condensed around her hands and Valerys waited for the moment – when both her chakra was dense enough and she had predicted Kikkai’s next movement and could aim precisely for her. Kikkai wove to the right and Valerys raised her hand quickly, sending the ram flying from her fingertips. She thought that she would hit Kikkai, but the attack missed by a foot and dove into the wall creating a resounding crack and explosive sound. Kikkai jumped but it had not hit her, although Valerys could not help inspect the damage and knew that she must be getting better. Not to mention how much easier it had been to create the jutsu and send it flying such a distance that time. She held up her fist, powering the attack back up, and Kikkai continued to maneuver back and forth. It would seem that there work was done yet.

The Overhand Throw

Now that they were in training room together, and Valerys had learned her technique, Valerys turned to her and said, “Now we can focus on your training.” Kikkai nodded, knowing that she had a long way to come now that she was teaming up with a ninja of the Sand Village. Valerys questioned Kikkai about what she had been learning and was introduced in the art of throwing that she’d been using with various weaponry. Kikkai remembered one of the stances that a master had shown her, when she was first learning, and told Valerys that she could show it to her. Kikkai stepped forward, taking a kunai to practice with, and stood in front of the target that Valerys had been using earlier. She brought her arm up so that it was adjacent with her ear, and then threw the kunai as accurately as she could. Fortunately, Kikkai was rather good with weapons.

The kunai rushed through the air and hit the side of the target, but it was slightly off of dead-center. “Not good enough it would seem,” Valerys said, never one to sugar-coat things, and told Kikkai to try again. She retrieved the kunai and held it slack in her hands, letting her muscles feel her chakra and ease into the stance, her mind going blank so as to calm her conscious mind. All of a sudden she threw her slack arm up and to her ear, before dropping it and not a second before releasing the kunai from her grip so that it flung through the air toward her target. This time it hit right in the center and Valerys grinned. “See not so hard.” Kikkai looked at the kunai in the bull’s eye and couldn’t help but smile at herself. She was learning more already…

Having learned the Overhand Throw, the next plausible direction was to master the last of the stances that she had been shown during her travels in the Land of Wind – the Underhand Throw. Kikkai retrieved the kunai that she had been using and told Valerys about the next step. Valerys, a taijutsu specialist herself, stood along the side and watched – in case she could determine some way to make Kikkai’s training quicker. This time Kikkai held the kunai down by her hip and let her muscles go slack, like before. Her mind started to turn blank and she took in several deep inhales and exhales to steady her mind, suddenly opening up her eyes and rising her arm at the same moment. She could see the bull’s eye in her mind’s eye like a direct point – one that she knew she needed to hit from any direction. As her hand swung up, Kikkai released the kunai from her fingertips and sent it flying through the air. In a moment it hit its mark and smacked into the target with a resounding thud. Kikkai looked down at her hands, a measure of disbelief over her face at how quickly she was learning to throw underhanded. She grabbed back the kunai and tried it a couple more times for good measure, making sure that she was accurate with this stance before moving on to any more difficult techniques. Each time the kunai whistled through the air and hit its mark and demonstrated Kikkai’s natural affinity for weapons in general – a skill that Valerys undoubtedly planned to make use of.

Kikkai looked at Valerys with a grin, proud that she had successfully completed all of the stances that she had been taught by the throwing specialists. Valerys also seemed pleased, but told Kikkai that now the real work would begin – and that she had to learn to make a basic throw with adept accuracy and speed. Kikkai got the kunai back from the target and now stationed herself further back, at a distance of ten meters, and studied the distance closely. In the past she had not been very accurate at this distance, but Valerys was telling her that now it was time to master the technique. “As a ninja,” Valerys explained, “I’ve used weapons a lot, but I have a feeling that you’ll be able to become even more experienced than I am with all sorts of items.” Kikkai was surprised, but headed the words of her partner and did some breath work to relax and loosen her muscles. Valerys also taught her several stretches to loosen her arms so that they would have a wider range of motion when she went to make her throws with the kunai. After these fundamentals, Kikkai stared straight ahead with the kunai in her hand – more than ready to prove her worth.

She brought up her hand in the Underhand Stance and looked straight ahead, her eyes fixated on the bull’s eye, and released a single kunai in a straight line. Unfortunately, she hadn’t been precise enough and the kunai didn’t even hit the target. Valerys sighed. “Now, now, that isn’t going to do.” Kikkai drew one more and focused more intensely this time, almost seeming to zoom-in her vision so that she stared right at the target. She took in a deep breath and looked at the line from her own body to the goal and suddenly released the blade from her hand. There was undeniable force behind the attack as it went through the air, but ended up hitting the side of the target rather than the center. Kikkai knew that she was going to have to get better and so she asked Valerys to come back in an hour. “As you wish,” Valerys said and went on her way. In the meantime Kikkai retrieved her weaponry and got back into position, ready to finish her training.

She spent the whole hour throwing the kunai at the target, getting better and better each time. In all she must have thrown the kunai over one hundred times and it left her breathing heavily, sweat dripping down the sides of her face and hair. I’m not yet as strong as Valerys… she thought to herself but trained that much harder to make up for it, using her physical prowess to deliver devastating throws of the blades at the target. In the last twenty minutes she was able to hit the bull’s eye almost every time. Her arms were beginning to stiffen and get sore, however, and her muscles needed a break. When Valerys returned she saw the condition that Kikkai was in and asked, “Did you do it?” Kikkai didn’t answer with words but drew another kunai from her belt, looked up at the target and concentrated. In a moment her hand flew through the air and released the blade from her fingertips – sending it through the air like before. This time, however, it hit dead-center of the target and buried itself deep in the oak wood. “Good,” Valerys said, “Then we can move on.”

Description: Range of this technique is 30 meters + 15 meters per Class Level. Target is 1 or more creatures no two of which can be more than 5 meters apart. Duration of this technique is instantaneous. This technique requires a small source of earth nearby. The user can create 5 bolts of stone per Class Level. Each group of bolts inflicts 6 Armour Points of damage per bolt in the group on a successful hit. In addition, if hit by a rock bolt, a creature must make Fortitude save or be stunned for 1 round be knocked prone by the impact of the bolt.
Limit: Must know Earth Release.

“We are going to be taking a break from the art of throwing,” Valerys said, “So that you can get better at some of your ninjutsu.” Kikkai looked at Valerys a little confused, the only release she knew was earth and even that one not very well. “Your muscles are about used up for taijutsu, but your chakra is still accessible,” Valerys continued and they stood next to a couple of rocks that had been set up in the training room specifically for this purpose. “You must learn to turn them into weapons to hurl at your foes,” Valerys explained, “Using only your chakra. Although you have all sorts of metal weapons, in the field you may need to rely on your own skills at times.” Kikkai looked at the three massive boulders and wondered how difficult it was going to be to mold them with her chakra. She set about learning a few handseals from some of the other students and teachers, then used them in front of the rocks – running her chakra out of her body and into the environment. As a taijutsu specialist, this was difficult for her. The chakra ran out of her body and into the rocks, beginning to merge with their dense physical structure, and Kikkai focused on the handseals and the energy coursing through her body. She tried to command one of the boulders to break apart into a smaller bolt.

The strucutre of the earth was too dense, however, and her chakra too weak. The jutsu did nothing. Valerys watched with patience as Kikkai tried again, forming the handseals and stimulating the chakra within her gut to move out into the air around her. She needed to produce more chakra than she was used to, putting a strain on her body that she hadn’t noticed before. The air seemed to become heavy as the chakra ran into the rocks and began to fill them up. Kikkai pushed herself to the limits, running as much chakra as her body would allow into the jutsu and then beginning to focus on forming the rock into weaponry. A shaft of stone started to form out of the tops of one of the boulders, slowly beginning to protrude and then making its way out into the air. Kikkai went to reach for it but Valerys said, “No, throw it with your chakra.” Kikkai was surprised but tried to do as she was told, moving her chakra from within the boulders into the rock bolt that she had made. It was difficult for her to control such large amount of chakra and she could not get it to draw out of the rock. She cursed a little and then went back to try the technique again, determined to master it even if it wasn’t as simple as the taijutsu she had been learning.

She formed the handseals once more, running her chakra throughout the rocks and around the bolt that she had already crafted, making sure to fill the air with energy as well so that she could fling it when she got it loose. Pulling the bolt from the stone was like mental exercise, and Kikkai had to finely tune her concentration and instincts so that the chakra began to lift the bolt from the rocks. Finally, after half a minute, the bolt began to emerge and Kikkai was able to lift it (however unsturdy) into the air. “Now launch it at the target,” Valerys said simply, and Kikkai reached inside of herself – drawing upon reserves of chakra that she didn’t even know that she had. The chakra piled up behind the bolt as Kikkai focused on it, watching it with her eyes and never letting it leave the intense concentration of her mind, then she suddenly exploded all of the chakra sending the bolt flying through the air. Her accuracy with the ninjutsu was far from perfect and it didn't even hit the target, but Kikkai was proud of what she had accomplished so far. Hoping to master the technique as quickly as possible, Kikkai ran through the handsigns again and wove whatever chakra she had left into the earth forming not one, but two bolts this time.

Description: Relevant Abilities: Intelligence Skill. Die Rolls: 5 Die Rolls. Check Requirement: Normal. Rituals are complex ceremonies that create Chakra effects. The user does not memorize or prepare a ritual; a ritual is so long and complex that no one could ever commit the whole thing to memory. Characters with this skill can train 1 ritual type (declared when the skill is chosen) to maximize the potential of the Rituals they selected. A character may acquire additional Ritual types to improve by choosing this skill again. A person versed in Ritual Lore receives training in Rituals to both improve a Ritual and identify rituals. As such, they can peruse Ritual books and other items part of rituals to learn their contents. Ritual Jutsu Performing and Ritual Lore are related to each other much like engineering and pure science. That is, Seal Performing is all about applying basic Ritual-based principals to demonstrate uses. A junior Seal Performer is much like an amateur tinkerer. They know little (if any) theory but has some measure of practical experience—sufficient to deal with the elementary challenges of low-level Seals and Rituals. As they progress in experience, their additional theoretical training allows them to perform progressively more complex Rituals and Seals. As they reach higher levels, even if they have not specifically undertaken to study Ritual Lore, they have sufficient training to comprehend and use relatively complex Ritual theory. However, if the user wishes to ever be anything more than a Jutsu lobber, additional training is recommended. Some practical applications of Ritual Lore follow:

Now that the two of them had learned a few tricks together, Valerys told Kikkai that they were done for the day. “But,” she added, “You should go to see the teacher Kimyona – I think that he has some tricks that he could teach you in relation to your weapon-crafting.” Kikkai immediately perked up, although she was so tired, at the hint that there were jutsu and skills that could be learned here that related to her crafting. She traveled to Kimyona’s Tower and went inside, looking around for a little while before she found the mentor hunched over a desk in one of the back rooms. “Oh hello,” Kikkai said, “I was told that there was a master here that could teach me some crafting techniques, but I haven’t quite been able to find them yet.” Kimyona looked up from his work and looked her over before telling her that it was him. He took her over to one of his shelves and grabbed a scroll down, which was marked with a grey ribbon with the kanji “Creation” written on it. He handed her the scroll and said, “Introduce yourself to the material and then we can get started with some of the difficult details.” Kikkai sat at one of the tables close by and opened the scroll, getting down to work.

The scroll apparently centered on a set of rituals known as Creation Rituals, which Kikkai had never heard of before. The rituals were said to be able to make things out of thin air, such as weaponry and other tools. The more she read, the more interested she became. The scroll started off with an explanation and short story by Azagar, one of the ritual masters. Then there was a list of some of the rituals that could be done and their basic descriptions, giving her glimpse into the power of the creation rituals. Some of them, it would appear, could even leave special seals on items that granted them additional powers – a trait that Kikkai wanted to master dearly. The scroll listed a basic description of how this could be done as well the price and how long it would take one to perform the ritual, information that Kikkai did her best to try to remember. She memorized as much of the scroll as she could in a short amount of time and then told Kimyona that she was done. “Well then,” he said, “Let’s get down to some of the real work.”

“Now we’re going to try out a test,” Kimyona said and Kikkai looked at him curiously. He got out a brush and a piece of paper and said, “I’ll give you a seal to write down and you do it, just as you’ve read about in the scroll. Being able to see the seal in your eye is very important, and to be able to decipher between the different types of creation rituals, so that when you get down to crafting a weapon you can more easily apply the aforementioned seal.” Kikkai looked at the brush a little dreary, but agreed – knowing that this was the best way that she could help out Valerys. First he had her start with an easy one, the seal that symbolized a minor chakra item enhancement. She dipped the brush in the ink jar and began to smear it across the sheet of paper. She tried to remember every detail about the seal that she had seen locked away in the scroll, now running around jumbled inside of her head. It took her ten minutes but eventually she said, “Complete.” Kimyona took one look at it and decided that it was unsatisfactory. He went over to the shelf and pulled down the scroll so that he could show her where she went wrong.

Kimyona opened to the diagram of the seal she had tried to drawn and showed her several instances where she had made a mistake, displacing the wrong kanji along the outside or the wrong line work on the interior. “Yeah I’m just not really good at studyin’, you know?” Kikkai said, but Kimyona shook his head. “You’ll want to get better,” Kimyona instructed, “the art of a craftsman is intricate and detailed, requiring a fine eye, hand, and memory. Part of your training should be figuring out if you are cut out to use the creation rituals.” Kikkai looked more closely at the scroll and thought about her purpose and the power of the creation rituals. There was no doubt about, she was meant to master these rituals – she could feel it in heart of hearts and when she looked at her weapons, ready for an upgrade. Just the thought of it excited her and made all of the studying seem like it is worth it. “Alright, give me that scroll,” Kikkai said and took it back, laying down in the floor and beginning to read over its contents once more. This time making sure to memorize every little detail in anticipation of the test, but for her tasks in life as well. She had to go slowly through the diagrams, piece by piece, starting with each of them and memorizing the details until she could see them clearly inside of her mind even when she closed her eyes – then she’d move on to the next one.

By the time her eyes started to get blurry, Kikkai thought that she had memorized every last ones of the signs and kanji that were used throughout the creation rituals. When she told Kimyona, of course he gave her the test just like before. He chose a more difficult seal to start off and wanted her to draw it perfectly. Kikkai looked into her mind and the storehouse of creation ritual knowledge that she had just learned. She could see the seal perfectly in her mind as she reiterated it through the brush and on to the piece of paper. When she was done, she showed the seal to Kimyona and he said that she had done quite well – then gave her an even more difficult seal to replicate. Kikkai did each seal in turn until she had draw almost each of them perfectly, without the slightest skewed line or kanji. When Kimyona saw all of this he said, “Alright good work, it looks like you’re ready to move on.” That was when he pulled down a case from on the wall and drew out a kunai from within, handing it to his pupil. “You’re going to work on moving your chakra throughout weaponry and understanding the creation chakra that runs throughout this blind.”

Kikkai let her mind go blank, just as Kimyona was instructing her, and closed her eyes – drifting off into her mind and her intuition. Her own chakra began to run through the kunai, inspecting and picking up any chakra aspects to the weaponry. Eventually she began to get the presence of a certain type of chakra within the metal. She inspected the chakra with her mind and then returned to Kimyona. He asked her what type of seal she thought it was. “I don’t know specifics, but a lower rank type of seal,” Kikkai said, “But there is definitely a chakra present within the blade.” Kimyona revealed under a ribbon strapped around the kunai, and a minor chakra item enhancement seal. Kikkai had proven correct. “In time you might even be able to sense what kind of rituals exactly,” Kimyona said, “And you should be able to tell my looking at the qualities of this kunai that it is superior to most others. It is a masterwork weapon, which is required to forge weapons with creation ritual seals.” Kikkai was surprised at just how much she was learning from the man and thanked Valerys inside of her mind for the wealth of information, making a mental note to pay her back when the moment was right and she had learned enough about these creation rituals.
