Thinking back on these days had filled Akumu with happiness. But as he looked out into the jungle now, all he could think about was how awful the world had become and how long he'd been absent from his master. As if to distract himself from the thoughts, Akumu ventured into the jungles and left the temple for a little while to hunt animals and clear his mind. He had an adept sense of hearing, but knew that with enough training he could hone his skills even more. As he wisped past the trees, he could hear all of the animals that were nearby -- a bird on a branch overhead and a chipmunk rolling around in the bushes. But he wanted to be able to hear all of those creatures beyond the trees, and perhaps even something much larger that he could munch on. As a bard he was accustomed to listening for different sounds and pinpointing their locations but he could do so much better.
As he slithered past a small pool, he concentrated on his hearing and thought he could perceive the slight scuttling of an animal. It was just outside his normal range of perception, but with a little focus he was able to bring it further into his awareness. He could make out its footsteps, slow and deliberate as if it were grazing near one of the trees nearby. He hid so as not to alert the prey to his presence, then continued to listen to its soft scuttling as he peaked around some of the nearest elms. He followed the sound, making it easier to locate the creature, and discovered it with a little bit of effort -- but he had been fooled! It was nothing than a groundhog burrowing near the roots of one of the elms.
Letting out a disgruntled snort, Akumu turned and headed back out into the jungle. He allowed his ears, once again, to attune to the sounds of the jungle as he seemed to become a part of its complex tapestry of sounds. He should have known, based on the sounds, that it had been a groundhog -- or at least that it had been something too small too eat. He had not focused his awareness enough and as a result he had failed, but he corrected himself by being absorbed even more into his surroundings than before. Now he could perceive even more minute sounds within his closest range (the crawling of a beetle on the ground three meters away), but his mind began to open up even wider. Soon he was hearing all of the animals within thirteen meters, behind some of the further trees. It seemed that there were a flock of birds somewhere up in the trees.
