Sigh
A motion, and expulsion of air all too heavy for a girl her size escaped her. She saw it in his eyes the instant her green met his steel grey. The training was gonna get worse. Much, much worse, and graduating from the academy was not a free pas. As soon as the festivities from the rest of her family had ceased they would begin. For a good hour she was hugged and congratulated, she was given gifts of weapons, an bags even a medical bag filled with first aid equipment and some specialized equipment from her Stepdad. She smiled and laughed trying to forget the knot in her stomach that only grew worse with time.
Finally, after dinner everyone was gone and Asami now stood with her stepdad on the patch of grass they called a garden fully equipped, except for her tonfas, which he had scoffed at and told her to keep in her room. "A medical shinobi does not attack, does not fight. If you want to waste your time with sticks, that will be on your own time. This is survival training." And so it would be.
He stood, holding no weapon himself yet Asami knew he could deliver devastating attacks with just those hands of his. She was not fooled. "Move past me." She looked up surprised, but dared not ask the question on her tongue, and instead bit down her lower lip to swallow it. With her green eyes narrowed suspiciously, she cautiously moved closer to him, ready to jump back with a moments notice. So when his muscles twitched before his arm came swinging, that is indeed what she did, only to be rewarded with a second hard slap on her right cheek that sent her tumbling. "I Said! Move. Past. Me." His tone was deceptively calm, but had gained the dangerous edge, that told her she had done very wrong. If her throbbing red print of his hand was no indication. She looked up at him with anger and hate, but knew there was no helping it, so she took her own hand away, which had by reflex risen up to cup her cheek protectively and rose to her feet.
"You stay on the ground. Like water around a rock, you weave past me." Easier said than done. Yet as nice as he could be, as he once was before the training started, as deaf to her plights did he become once the training started, so there was no telling him that unless she wanted to receive a punishment veiled as even harder training. So she moved slowly carefully closer to him, trying to pay attention to the movement of this man, standing almost still as a rock. She docked under his first punch, gaining a nod she didn't see as she suddenly went flying once again, only halfway having her arms up in a futile block, which he bulled through with ease. Her knee had scraped against the dirt, and she came up gasping for air from the clean hit in her solar plexus, which had blown the wind out of her.
"Never take your eyes off the enemy. Always be ready for another hit. Never move yourself into a disadvantageous position. AGAIN!"
She massaged the sore spot, and inhaled deeply a few times as she moved, knowing that he would not grant her time to recuperate. She was ready for the combination blow this time, and got just a single step behind him, only to be awarded by a kick that sent her pummeling straight down into the grass headfirst, her vision swimming for a moment by the force behind it. Shocked she looked back up into his relentless face that showed no remorse. He had never kicked her before. Never! And then realization dawned on her, just how advanced this useless peace of cloth with a plate on it signified. She felt no stronger than yesterday, nor faster, or smarter, she felt like the academy had only taught her a few things that would save her life in the missions to come, and none that would help him against this man, as he had made it very clear once she began, that unless he stated otherwise no ninjutsu techniques would be used in his sessions.
"You took your eyes off me. AGAIN!"
She got up on shaking feet, and was graciously allowed to move back to her spot to start anew. And this time, she felt an ember of heat ignite in her belly. She moved faster now, and managed to block his first hit with an arm that would have broken a few years back, but this time she could see in his expression that she had shocked him with the force. She had been forced to train her arm strength, when she learned to block with the tonfa, and even if she had no protective wood between her arm and his now, she used the same technique. He moved his other arm to swing, one she weaved under, her arms moved into blocking position both above and below, while she quickly got up again, and turned slightly to keep him in her vision at all times. Yet she was not quite fast enough to keep her defenses up as she found her footing once more, and was rewarded with a push in her torso, forceful enough to knock her back, even as she had managed to move a fraction of an inch to make the impact less powerful. She kept standing this time though, the ember in her belly having grown to a full fledged fire.
"Too Slow. Again!"
She raced towards him, now more focused on hurting him as she would pass him, and attempt that was met with swift justice and two kicks, one to sweep the legs out from under her, and one that sent her tumbling through the grass only to lie still for a while. "Do not let your anger cloud your judgement. Again!"
She did not hear him anymore. She whimpered but rose once more, holding her abdomen which would sport a big purple bruise in the morning, and moved once more, though more tenderly to account for the pain that was now shooting through her in waves from that last kick. She had noticed long ago, that he didn't use the same sequences, so she could never anticipate where his hit would be, so she had to be observant, nurse the fire in her belly that only grew, but feed it to her brain and not her muscles. And she found that zen. Where the feeling of grass tickling her feet because it needed to be cut didn't matter. The winter frost biting at her skin didn't matter, nor the delicious smell of her mom's cooking that played in her nose. Only he did. Only his movements his tell mattered, and after tentatively blocking the first punch, he movements got gradually more confident and filled with purpose. She would pay him back. Pay him back by getting past him, and she dodged and blocked the hits that came her way, focusing on maintaining speed and precision, as she slowly turned to circle him until finally she stood three steps away from him, and he lowered his arms.
For a moment she stood there in bafflement. Arms still raised in defense, not really understanding what was happening, but then it dawned on her. She had done it. She had somehow, successfully moved past him, a dangerous man, holding nothing back, and not giving her an inch. A rushing thought made her look at his feet and she realized with horror, that he had not moved a single step. Of course she had not learned to dish out any punches yet, except what they had been taught in the academy, but for all her weaving and ducking, for all her blocking, and trying to direct his punches, she had not been able to make him more. *Like a rock!*
