Obscuring Mist
Rank: "D"
Skill: NinJutsu
Effect: User creates a small cloud of mist to obscure sight.
Special: Handseals
Drawback: ---
Description: Range of this technique is 6 meters. Area of effect is a cloud spreading from the user 6 meter radius and 6 meters high. This technique requires a medium source of water nearby. A misty vapor arises around the user. It is stationary. The vapor obscures all sight, including darkvision, beyond 2 meters. A creature 2 meters away has concealment. Creatures farther away have total concealment, and the attacker cannot use sight to locate the target. A moderate wind (11+ mph), such as from a Gust of Wind Jutsu, disperses the fog in 4 rounds. A strong wind (21+ mph) disperses the fog in 1 round. A fireball, flame strike, or similar Jutsu burns away the fog in the explosive or fiery Jutsu's area. A wall of fire burns away the fog in the area into which it deals damage. This Jutsu does not function underwater.
Limit: Must know Water Release.

Shoma's hands flashed before him, his fingers forming the combinations of seals he had learned earlier that day. His lips parted as he silently mouthed the names of each seal as his hands performed them. He needed water to accomplish this particular task, so as Shoma continued to practice the handseals, his feet made their way towards a nearby pond. Shoma's head was bent, his mismatched eyes unfocused as he performed the seal again and again. So engrossed was he in his practice, that Shoma's foot had actually sunk into the mud at the pond's edge before he realized that he had reached his destination.
Shoma glanced quickly around to make sure that no one else witnessed this mishap, silently berating himself for not being more alert. He pulled his foot from the mud with a wet squelch, and wiped it back and forth against the ever plentiful grass, scraping off the worst of the mess. He straightened his father's cloak, arranging it so that it would not interfere with his arms. He tucked an errant strand of his flaming red hair behind one ear, practicing the hand signs one more time before attempting the technique itself.
"When performing techniques involving elemental ninjutsu, the key is concentration, as well as an affinity with the element you're working with. The water element is intuitive and sensitive. It's about compassion and understanding...feeling rather than relying on sense and logic. It's artistic. On the other hand, water can be volatile and destructive. It's persitant and can weather down the toughest stone. If any part of you reflects any these traits, you should have little trouble mastering this simple technique. Just tap into that inner part of yourself that harmonizes with the water element, form the handseals, and watch as an impenetrable mist surrounds you."
Shoma clearly remembered his tutor's instructions, and looked inside himself to find his affinity to the water element. He thought of his intuition...how he could read people and their intentions. Sometimes he thought he knew what they were going to do before they did themselves. Shoma screwed his eyes shut in concentration and formed the handseals. When he opened them, he was disappointed to find that only a thin mist had formed around him....hardly impenatrable. Upon further reflection, Shoma realized that his ability to read others was more from intense observation, rather than a natural empathy. Wait...the instructor had spoken of water's persistence. Perhaps that was the path to take.
Shoma closed his eyes again. This time he visualized water's constant ebb and flow, taking centuries to cut new paths through the land and weather jagged rock into smooth stone. If Shoma was anything, it was persistant. He did not give up. He could wear people down, just as water did stone. Shoma performed the handseals again, then squinted through one partially open eyelid, his green eye shining and hopeful. A slow grin spread over Shoma's face as a dense fog billowed from the pond, concentrating around his person.
"Excellent," Shoma thought happily to himself, "This mist will work well to obscure my Shinjuu Zanshu no Jutsu. The enemy won't know what hit him!"
After performing the jutsu three more times, just to be sure he had it down, Shoma strode confidentally from the pond, whistling a lively tune as he walked. He couldn't wait to tell his mother about his new jutsu...hopefully over a bowl of his favorite stew.
