A sound from below made her open her eyes. She was always on the alert -- a little overly so at times. The source of the sound was quickly identified to be a rabbit. How it had gotten there she wasn't at all sure. But she had a soft spot for all things cute...and fluffy. Kotoe jumped down from the tree branch and she frowned.

Walking closer to the rabbit, she saw a wound on its front leg. A cut that she guessed just by looking at it, was deep but not too deep. Still she could tell the rabbit was suffering. She knelt down and put her hands over the wound, closing her eyes once again.

Her chakra ran through her body and she was trying to focus her energy to her hands. Kotoe remembered the technique she learned before, to deal with minor wounds. She wondered if it woukd work this time too. Her definition of minor was pretty lax.

She remembered that there were no handseals so she only waited, feeling the energy inside her body come together. As she opened her eyes, she let her chakra out, pouring it onto the wound and watched.

[/font] Her mother had been standing close by watching. "You have to make sure your chakra goes inside the rabbit, to the wound." Kotoe was grateful to have a former medic as a mother. The kunoichi often missed crucial yet common sensual points and her mother was usually there to lead her back on track.

She channeled her chakra again, putting both hands gently on the wound. Gathering her energy, she tried again, this time watching as it went inside the rabbit's body like a circuit. The wounded area started to glow a little, a sign that at least she was on the right track.

"It's also important to do it quickly." Kotoe nodded, looking at the rabbit. It gave a little cry but didn't move. It's wound was a little more severe than she had imagined. Another crucial error: misjudgment. She continued, not taking her eyes off the wound. It was definitely getting smaller.[/div][/font][/ul]

[/font] Kotoe panicked a little, taking her hands off the animal. That's right...what if it was a human?! Too slow, she thought. Without another second of hesitation she repeated the steps. It's easier to have chakra first before making contact, she thought. Though not life threatening, she couldn't bear to watch the little fur ball suffer any longer.

I don't have all day, she thought.

She retracted her chakra at that point, looking at the wound carefully. She closed her eyes, imagining that she was't in the safety of her own home, saving a rabbit, but a person. Her chakra began building in her hands, this time with more energy and pace. When she opened her eyes again, they were sharp and determined. Let's do this! Kotoe could see her chakra was a lot more focused this time. Maybe...maybe it would work!

The girl put her hands on the little animal before her, passing her chakra over the wound once again. She knew that all medical jutsus required precision that could only be gained from practice and more practice. Kotoe always had trouble with precision, a flaw that was detrimental for any aspiring medic. 

Don't think of anything else...she told herself sharply. Closing her eyes again and simply concentrated on the task in front of her. After a minute she opened her eyes again. She watched the wound heal in front of her eyes. The cut wasn't really that deep, which allowed second and even third tries. As if reading her mind, her mother called from behind "Don't get too excited, Koto. This is only the beginning." She nodded her head in response, slowly retracting her chakra back from the rabbit. ~Flashback~
“This technique is called Chakra Scalpel, Kotoe. Many medics use it for surgeries and autopsies. Watch carefully.” Her teacher at the academy, Tomoya, was a medic. He had offered to teach her some jutsus and skills when he learned she too wanted to be a medic. They were standing on the training grounds, logs piled in front of them. “Chakra scalpel is basically making chakra blades with your fingers.” He demonstrated this to her, expelling his chakra to his fingers to make blades. “It takes a lot of practice especially if you want to use them to cut something. Let’s start with just focusing your chakra. Show me what you can do."

Kotoe nodded her head, closing her eyes. She wasn't sure how much of her chakra was needed for the technique nor what exactly she was doing. At that time she had only practiced academy jutsus and really basic techniques, nothing quite as finite and concentrated as this jutsu seemed to be. But still, she gave it her best shot, focusing her chakra to her hands. "Just your index and middle fingers...of your dominant hand. Your fingers will act as the scalpel so concentrate" came Tomoya's voice from beside her. She again nodded and shifted her chakra to just her right hand and directing it to her index and middle fingers.

"Good, now maintain the chakra flow. If it breaks, you'll have to start all over again." she could feel her own chakra quivering. She knew that this was an important step because the amount of chakra was crucial to whether it had the ability to form blades. Think...concentrate on making sharp edges...she recalled how Tomoya's fingers not only covered with his chakra but also formed sharp points needed for them to act like blades. She opened her eyes to look at what she had created, watching her chakra gather.

"Ok, now let's practice control. You have the right idea but if you can't maintain your chakra flow, it won't be any good for cutting." [/font][/div][/ul]

[/font] she was still not very certain. "Well, it depends on what you are trying to cut and how deep you want to cut through. Take this log for example. It's quite a hard surface so you're first step is to make small and shallow cuts. The more you practice, the easier it will get to determine." he smiled at her encouragingly. Kotoe looked at the small piece of log in front of her. If she was just trying to make a small cut on the surface, it shouldn't be that hard.

"You have to maintain your energy flow while you are cutting so the formation of the blade should only be the first step. Watch closely." Tomoya knelt down on the ground and released some of his chakra. "See? I've made blade. Now it's up to how much chakra I use to make the actual cut. Th2is is a log which is much harder to cut than a human body." she nodded her head. "Try making quick cuts to start off."

Kotoe tried again, focusing a lot harder on the 'control' of chakra release instead of its formation. Because she had done it once, the making of the scalpel was not a problem this time around. When she opened her eyes, she put her fingers over the log, with a swift flick of her wrist, she made an small indent on its surface, equal to a little scrape. Ok...not enough...she didn't retract her energy, moving her fingers to another part of the log. Before she moved her fingers to cut, she expelled a little more of her chakra this time around, hoping for a little more than just a scrape.

"Scrapes are okay for now. Try to make smaller cuts faster." That was not a problem, she thought to herself. She continued doing this about five more times, making little dents on the log's surface before she retracted her energy. Looking down at the cuts she made, she wasn't at all satisfied. A log was not really a good measure of how strong her scalpel is, she thought. But what else can she use to test? [/div][/font][/ul]

Softer? Her eyes drifted to Tomoya as he pulled out a little stuffed cat. "This is an old stuffed animal I brought over from my house. I don't need it anymore and thought it might be good for your practice." She didn't know whether to be amused or surprised. "It's my sister's" he coughed, reading her mind. Kotoe nodded her head and he placed the stuffed animal face up on the ground in front of her.

"Just like before, one more time." The girl closed her eyes again, feeling her chakra reacting to her mind. Recently she was able to focus her energy in her body a lot better than when she first started. Maybe all it did take was practice. She gathered up her energy once again to her fingers and opened her eyes, staring directly at the stuffed animal. "I want you to make a cut down the middle, enough for the stuffing to come out." That meant more than a scrape, she thought to herself.

She put her hand on the chest are of the cat, already feeling it cut through the fabric. Kotoe watched as the scalpel she made with her fingers cut deeper, releasing more of her energy as it did so. But she she was careful not to release too much, as Tomoya had said he wanted to see a cut down the middle. The girl slid her fingers down from the initial point of contact, keeping a steady flow of energy all the way through.

Did she do it?

Tomoya gave her a smile, watching her chakra scalpel make more than just a small incision. In a quick motion, she made a long vertical cut, retracting her energy at the end, stopping at what was the cat's abdomen. The fabric tore open like a knife through butter and some of the white stuffing flew out, pouring on her hands. She turned around and smiled back at her teacher. It felt good to learn, even better when she did things right. "Congratulations, your first of many step to being a medic cleared!"[/div][/font][/ul]

“Koto! Koto!” came a very familiar voice. It was Tomoya and today was another one of their training sessions. By now they were training together every week, mostly because she thought learning with him was much easier. She had arrived at his house, a change of scenery from the regular training grounds of the academy. His house had a backyard-like area, vacant and big enough for training with the exception of a big patch of grass and some flowers. She had gone straight in and was making her way through the house when she heard her name. Kotoe quickened her step and found Tomoya, sitting on the ground. He’d been training, she thought as she rushed over to him. “Can you help me? I think I sprained my foot just now and it’s too painful to stand.” He winced a little as she came closer.

“How?”

“Go upstairs to my room, it’s the room on the right and their should be some scrolls. Grab all of them,” he ordered. Koto nodded and rushed up the stairs. She found a stack of five scrolls stacked neatly on a wooden desk. She took them and went back to Tomoya. “Look through them and see if you can find one that helps ease pain.” She nodded and ran her eyes over the scrolls. After a moment she found it and showed it to him. “Ok, so now can you follow what it says? I know it’s a new jutsu for you so take this as a learning opportunity.”

“What do you do first?”

“Chakra…” she muttered half to herself, putting down the scroll. It was easier learning medical jutsus for her because it didn’t have handseals. But the consistency in her chakra flow affected her performance in some jutsus, as she had learned. She knew that gathering her energy to her hands wasn’t a problem anymore, but even the slightest interruption in thought made this process extra long. She put her hands over Tomoya’s leg, gathering her chakra and releasing it from her hands. Kotoe didn’t know when to stop but continued to do this for a couple of minutes. On her own judgment, she withdrew her hands.

“Does it still hurt?” She stood up and helped him stand too. Since it was a sprain, she knew that he wouldn’t be able to walk, even if the pain was gone. His expression cleared slightly and they both went inside the house. “It doesn’t hurt anymore, thanks.” She was more relieved that he was able to help him than happy that she had performed a jutsu correctly. “I can’t help you train today, I’m afraid. But you’re welcome to use my house.” As she turned to go back outside, she stopped, her eyes a widening a little. She managed to get outside before almost collapsing to the floor, her fist clenched.

Not now…

She hated being weak.. It was half the reason why she wanted to become a medic. The pain came and went in waves, always taking away her ability to move. She dropped to the ground, taking deep breaths. Almost every time it hit her, it was like being hit with a bat…an impact taking her off guard. But not this time around. Determined, she closed her eyes, still taking deep breaths and praying that it would work. It became extra difficult for her to focus, with pain taking control of her senses. She didn’t expect to be healing herself. [/div][/font][/ul]

[/font] she ran to the library and jumped in between her brother, Yuudai and sister, Kotoha. "What are you two doing?!" She didn't need them to answer. Trickles of blood splattered on the floor. Kotoe looked up and saw that her youngest sister was holding her bloodied head and crying, Her brother was startled and stood there, frozen in place. They were running around the house, playing and a vase fell on her sister's head. She took her sister and sat her down on a nearby chair, her chakra already reacting in her body. "Does it hurt?" the little girl wailed and nodded.

She examined the wound, looking to see if there were shards of glass. In any case she would have to take her to the hospital later but she needed to stop the frantic crying...for her ears sake and for her own sanity. "Shhh...let me look at it first, ok?" The kunoichi touched the wound gently with her hand. It didn't seem to be that bad. "Let me know if it hurts." she instructed Kotoha over her tears. Her natural mother instincts kicked in at that point, being overly protective of her siblings by default.

Her chakra poured out of her hand and onto Kotoha's head. In such a short span of time she would have to use so much of her chakra, definitely not what she was expecting. She felt a little lightheaded as she pushed her energy. Soon her sister stopped crying and she let go, feeling the drain in her system. She couldn't afford to use anymore of her chakra today, she thought to herself. "Yuudai, ask Mother to take Kotoha to the hospital."

She was going to go to sleep to recover.[/font][/div][/ul]
