Personality
Discipline, determination, and compassion was the holy trifecta taught to the boys by their grandfather, Aki, as they were growing up. These traits were instilled in them until they became a part of them. As they are still young though, they still enjoy playing and are fun loving boys. They often mix some form of training in with their play as most kids their age do. Together they are very respectful of their elders, especially Aki. Though they do differ as Naga has no problem questioning anything he doesn't find justifiable, where as Aori will follow any directive verbatim from those he respects.
Naga is often times referred to as a, for a lack of a better word, jerk. In truth, Naga is just blunt and refuses to beautify any topic, especially serious ones. His iron will has also gotten him pinned as stubborn or hardheaded, but known to be decisive and takes charge. This can be attributed to his almost militaristic attitude that he adopted from his grandfather. Armed with a quick wit and great sense of humor, if Naga can find someone who is able to talk to him, he can be excellent company and an even better friend. Naga aspires to be the epitome of what it means to be shinobi and will not let anything or anyone stand is his way and he swears he will see his goals realized with his brother at his side.
Infinitely more caring and sympathetic, Aori comes off as the softer brother. Emotionally he is, but he can throw senbon better and land a punch faster, albeit a tad softer, than his brother. He has always been viewed as the younger brother even though that's not true. He's not less intelligent than Naga, but he is more juvenile and naive. He makes friends easier and can relate to people better, but even he can be intimidating when he gets angry, with his calm demeanor turning to instant rage. He chooses to use energy to fight rather than talk when he is angry, but it's rare that anyone sees that side of him. This is the boy that stops to feed animals his food when they travel. If he sees a dead animal on his travels he will at least say a prayer, if not bury the creature with as close to proper rights as he can muster.
Naga and Aori have their differences of opinions and despite how much they look alike they are very seemingly two halves to a whole and when fused as one they come to compromises on most situations and rarely argue with one another. Even not fused, the boys don't like to argue with one another. They find it weird, like they are one person arguing with their alter ego. They find that taking turns with big or serious decisions is easier than trying to find a compromise. They both have lines that they refuse to allow the other to cross when they are one. Such as Aori refuses to be a part of anything perverted or even anything that deals with pretty girls they don't know. Naga has always been good about this and he doesn't often like to sneak around girls anyway lest they distract him and do they ever distract him. Aori on the other hand has, more than on one occasion, crossed Naga's line of showing off. Aori likes the attention the two got from their peers and he would usually go above and beyond to get it.
Naga hides a secret part of himself from the world that he doesn't let anyone, including Aori, see. Naga has taken a keen interest in death and dark mysticism. He currently teeters on the edge of studying and practicing. Naga has always been cautious in his curiosity, but once or twice he's recklessly followed people he knows practices these dark arts to satiate his curiosity, but it only made it that much worse. He feels a tinge of regret for hiding a part of his life from his brother, but he's afraid of how Aori would react. Aori on the other hand has a dark little secret of his own. Though he and Naga are close, he resents being Naga's twin and brother all together. Aori feels caged to a destiny that he doesn't want, but he fears the backlash of Naga and Aki if he decided to tell them he wants to be his own person.
Appearance
Being identical twins had its advantages growing up until the day Aki decided that he would punish both boys for the antics of either and/or both. Which was fair as you can't tell either boy from the other even now. No less only with a quick glimpse of a very tanned shoulder and leg disappearing behind a corner. In truth the boys go a long way to make themselves indistinguishable from one another. Aori got a scar on his calf at a young age while working on the farm, the moment they realized it was a scar, though a small one, Naga gave himself a scar in the same place. To this day this is the only way to tell the boys apart, not because it's the only scar the boys share, they have a few, but instead because this was when they learned that the instrument that cuts the flesh isn't always going to scar the same as another. The scar on Naga's leg is slightly longer and more fine as it was made by a blade and not a frayed metal water basin.
There is no real spectacular feature to the boys. Both are an average height and build for their age. They are both lean from hard labor and training, but that's not uncommon where they lived before moving to Iwagakure. They have dark hazel eyes and dark hair. Their hair would probably set them apart from others only because it grows out to be remarkably beautiful, wavy, and thick, but they keep it cut close, never growing it out more than a few inches. They also go through a morning routine of weighing themselves and measuring themselves to make sure they are a perfect match. They will starve themselves if the other is too ill to eat and they wear the same outfits and uniforms every day.
Cleanliness is also a part of this rigorous ritual. The boys can get dirty and they really don't mind. Naga likes to have a little dirt on him from hard work or training. Aori, doesn't really care, but he doesn't think that dirt, sweat, and blood are marks of effort like Naga does. Despite this though, you will rarely find them dirty for long if they can help it. To quote Aori, "Dirt marks and blood smears are near impossible to replicate on the go." This mentality goes towards their clothes as well. They will typically discard clothing instead of repairing it if it's going to be a very noticeable patch job. Because of this Aki has spent a fortune in clothing alone, but as well the boys will typically have a clean look.
The boys tend to dress themselves with tactical or at least utility apparel and despite the cool temperatures of the Land of Earth they don't typically dress very heavy. Or fashionable for that matter. On a very rare occasion you can see the boys dressed in nice clothing. This is typically when Naga has the desire to look nice and compromised with Aori who thinks the look of formal attire is egotistical at best. They prefer wearing loose and non-restrictive clothing when working, but when training or going on missions their attire is completely opposite so not to snag themselves on anything or to create unnecessary drag. They cherish anonymity and they like wearing masks for just that reason, and because it's fun to pull the occasional prank and scare the wits out of someone when you look like an oni.
The boys always travel armed and ready as they were taught from a young age. If you were to see them on the street you would think that they were heading out for a mission, but they could in fact just be taking a stroll or going to the store for groceries. Ever since they learned how to fuse they prefer to travel that way. It makes for a good surprise if jumped. They very rarely separate now. They split for sleeping, recreation, bathing, and occasionally for training. Together they carry a sickle on each hip and walk with their naginata in hand. Separately the boys split their sickles as well as their equipment and trade the naginata every so often, in and out of combat.
Background
At birth the boys seemed perfect. Aori, being born first then shortly after out came Naga. They were adorable puddles of fat, slime, and hair. Fast forward a year and they were babbling little heathens, but their parents loved them all the same. The family was happy and growing. Their mother was pregnant again, but to their surprise it was only one baby, until it wasn't. The twins inside their mother split after growth and tore the umbilical cord and the babies were lost. The word spread through the village that one of the parents had the Dioskouri bloodline and already had a set of twins. Word traveled far and fast and eventually landed on the ear of a man looking for such a bloodline. The man sent two men to kidnap the twins. The struggle was bloody. One of the men had punched the mother and the other lunged for the boys. He managed to grab ahold of one before cold hot steel pierced his shoulder. The father, in a fit of rage, was holding the knife double fisted, heaving it up and slamming it down on the kidnapper over and over again. The knife glanced off scapula and rib more than once, pushing the blade on the fathers own hands, but he didn't notice. He did, however, notice the knife that separated the flesh of his abdomen. Before he could react there was a blur of white and yellow and.. was that lilac? His world faded to black as the scent brought thoughts of his wife. His wife! Another thought flashed through his head as he pulled himself from his stupor. His wife, laying beaten and bloody on the floor, gasped, "The boys.", and began sobbing as her eyes passed over the blood stained cake.
When only one man returned with the boys the boss was impressed and even more excited to have "such a strong family donate their children." An older man, not feeble just old, walked forward. "Midori already has the Kedoin boy and girl. Aka is currently struggling with the adolescent Sadojin. Shiro and Ao have their hands full with the collection they have. I suggest we find that replacement for Daidai-" The other man cut him off, "I'm so glad you have volunteered yourself for the task, Murasaki. They will be your charge and I will be so nice as to give you and your soft hands the ranch in Tsuchi no Kuni." The old man began to radiate a deep red, almost... purple, color in his face with a look that would soon become daily apparel. "Yes, Kuro." He said. "I'm glad to see you're so eager and willing. You will leave tonight, Grandpa Aki.", Kuro laughed with a voice so hollow it seemed disembodied, "I trust you will have the children prepped and ready for the academy in a few short years and ready for us when they graduate."
Murasaki hated the land of Earth. It was where he was raised, but obviously, and thankfully, not remembered. He never did anything amazing here, but he was about to, or so he kept telling himself. He thought about tossing one or both boys from the wagon as it bounced along the road. It would have made his life easier, at least until it was cut short. He stared at the two small children and began concocting training regiments immediately. He had the two doing pushups in the back of the wagon before they reached the ranch, before the training had actually begun. Months passed and Aki soon realized that training children like they were men would only give him miles of grief with no actual progress. He allowed the children to play from time to time, but kept them busy with chores and training for the most part. He instilled in them that idle moments were wasted moments and you only have so many moments in a lifetime. He was relieved when that same ideology wasn't thrown back at him when he gave the boys permission to leave the ranch once a month to go to Iwagakure. He needed the peace as much as the boys needed to learn to interact with people. The boys began to look up to Aki and revere him as he taught them survival techniques and combat skills, but especially when they were taught ninjutsu, which Aki excelled at. As a reward for learning new techniques he told them his war stories and they were completely enthralled and worked harder after each one. Soon he felt like they were actually a family, but he knew he still had a job. One day there was a scream from the horse paddock, it was Aori. He had cut his leg open on the back of his calf. The water trough was kicked one too many times and a piece had split off. Aori cut his leg on the metal. Luckily their "Aunt" Haiiro, or just Iro, was there and healed him, but it left a scar. Not too long after Naga came to him with a similar wound, but it looked very deliberate. "Did you do this to yourself, Naga?", Aki asked. "Yes, sir.", he answered, "I don't want anyone to be able to discern Aori and I, ever. It's a tactical strategy we came up with. If we always look the same, we can be in two places at once and confuse and outmaneuver our enemies." Aki's jaw dropped a little in awe. "I have good news for you boys." Aki stated, "And some bad news for just you, Naga." "What is it?", Naga asked hesitantly. "The good news is, I found my nephews that share the same blood that you and Aori have. They will be arriving tomorrow." Naga looked at the old man impatiently, "No, what's the bad news, sir?" Aki looked at the boys leg and chuckled, "A knife wound won't heal the same way a wound from a jagged piece of metal will. It's too clean. And uh... Ah yeah. Too long." As Aki walked down the hall he couldn't help but feel pride, then share in the disappointment that expressed in a muffled curse as he looked at his scar.
Soon after Aki's "nephews", Inizi and Araki, arrived the boys didn't have time for much of anything. They had also started in the academy, they were obviously older than the rest of their classmates. Aki was so embarrassed not realizing how old they actually were. They would train in the morning and then go to the academy throughout the day, only to come home to Inizi and Araki drilling bloodline techniques into them. They were horrible teachers, and really rubbed Naga the wrong way, but they were able to get some good lessons into the mix. Araki took Aori out one day and walked through the bustling part of town. "I can tell you're the soft one. You'll never be the twin in charge, and that's okay.", Araki told Aori. The young boy looked on at the man confused and feeling a bit insulted. "I'm never the one walking around showing my beautiful mug either, but it's okay ya know why?" Araki asked, while eyeing a fruit stall despite intentionally bending over to be at eye level with Aori. Aori shook his head, but it went unnoticed as the man slowly stood and started walking to the stall and talking "Because I get to be the surprise! The sucker punch. I get to be the sneaky one. I want you to try to be the sneaky one. When we get up here, steal one of those watermelons." Aori looked at him in shock. Aori had been in trouble before for taking things that weren't his, though Aki seemed more stressed on the point that the box of strange drawings was HIS and not too overly concerned that Aori took it. Being the ever obedient boy he was though, when he got to the stall he looked at the woman running the stall. She didn't pay any attention to him as Araki had stolen all of it, walking up to the stall shouting lyricisms at her. Aori was able to grab up the watermelon and walk around the other side of the stall out of sight where he started making a hasty line away from it and Araki. Soon after Araki had caught up to him. "Nice work kid! You got a tasty treat and I got a date. I might just ditch Inizi for you if you keep this up. Hahaha! Things like will get so much easier when you and Naga learn how to use your abilities." Aori turned red, "I don't want this to get easier! She lost money on this watermelon. She is going to have to pay for it out of her own pocket!" He shoved the watermelon at Araki and as he caught it, Aori threw a hard left foot into a soft left... right... both spots. The watermelon cracked on the ground and Aori ran home. By the time Araki had gotten back Naga had heard about the trip and was beside himself with rage. Aki watched to see what he would do. As Araki came through the door in an equal rage, he was met with two firm feet planting into his hip and lower abdomen. As Naga stood back up both of his arms were grabbed and pulled in opposite directions. Araki, who was smiling now, said, "You like drop kicks? Well get a load of this!" As he finished his sentence two feet protruded through his lower torso and kicked Naga hard. As Naga stirred on the floor he looked at Inizi who waved at the boy and puffed out existence in a cloud of smoke and suddenly there was a loud shriek coming from where Naga just was. What are they screaming for? He wondered, but as he pulled his attention to them all he saw Aki standing in front of the twins, blocking them from coming closer. And there was blood coming from Araki's knee. Aori stood next to his brother with a senbon in each hand and more at the ready. 'Give me a clear shot. Just one more!' Aori thought in flurry of fear, rage, and excitement. Aki never gave anyone the chance to do anything else. He said a few words to the men in a low voice and they left. He turned to Aori and asked for the senbon. As soon as he handed them over Aki flicked his wrist and sent the boy flying.
The boys were sent off to the Land of River for a few weeks to train with Su Feng in the Tensora style to learn to wield a naginata. Aki thought this was a good precursor to their training for the Kamashi style. The short stint was over too soon and when they returned Kuro was visiting Aki. "Let's have a look at you two." He said, eyeing Naga holding his training naginata, "Show me what you can do with that." Naga set his bag down and gave a quick demonstration. "Pitiful.", Kuro said. "Absolutely horrendous. What have you been teaching these boys? Can they even fuze yet? Where are Inizi and Araki?" Aki sighed and replied, "Sir, they left after a.... misunderstanding." "MISUNDERSTANDING?!? The only thing they misunderstand is that the Saigo no Kamigami own them! Don't worry boys, your teachers will be back shortly. Aki, I expect true shinobi when I come back. Not just shinobi, but leaders as well." The irate man crossed the room and left with a slam of the door. Aki looked defeated then steeled himself. Looking at the boys he said, "Play time is over boys. Starting tomorrow you train until you bleed." He came through with his promise as he slammed the boys around until they couldn't move. Then they stayed out of the academy for several of the following weeks as Aki transported them from place to place in unimaginable time through what seemed like other worldly passages. Naga and Aori were never afraid, instead they were excited. Not just about the training, but the travel as well it seemed somehow familiar. The next year was intense, but not just physically, mentally too. They poured over so many scrolls. Aori took to the medicine scrolls as Naga took the alchemy ones. They figured they could be used in tandem. They always thought ahead like life was a giant game of chess, but they didn't know who their opponent was. As the year progressed they were allowed to study more and train less as they became more than capable with their physical training.
When they returned to Iwagakure they went to study at the academy yet again and even further behind, but they breezed through most of it and graduated shortly after. The age gap really showed during a sparring match that Naga partook in with a younger student, Yukari. Though the fight was close, Naga did overpower the younger student. It was the closeness of the match that made Naga realize the boy as, if nothing else, a good training partner. Aori liked the tenacity and tactfulness of Yukari and immediately took to him. Supplying the boys with the means to take care of themselves after graduation, Aki set out to tend with a personal errand. He left behind a list for the boys to complete by the time he returned that would not only make them grow their skills, but also broaden their horizons. Aki still needs them to train and press their skills to become at least chunin before he can take them back to Kuro.
