His master pointed him to the pond, which had a few rocks, Lachlan was to stand on those as he learned the stance. He was shown the proper stance of course, but the training to fall into it when needed and to maintain it had just begun. His master would occasionally piss Lachlan of, to throw him of, to disturb his focus and ruin his stance. That was of course intentionally, as a lesson in discipline, before correcting him.
But it was still not over, that had just been phase one. Now, Lachlan knew the stance, but could he return to it as he fought, or well, simulated battle without the use of sparring. His master employed interesting techniques and the one for this was simple, pebbles, the size of your average thumb. He'd throw them at and on Lachlan at random intervals, not to be mean, but to force him out of the stance and to go back to it, every now and then giving pointers to correct the stance.
And then came phase three, if he wasn't already bruised and soaked by pond water from falling into the pond time and time again, he was surely to exit this training soaked by sweat. First came running laps around the dojo, to build stamina and end each lap with the stance, since it would force him to think about something else, like how sore he was getting, how tired he was getting. Ending a lap with the proper stance would put this information in his subconscious and instinctively stand in the correct stance when needed.
