After twenty minutes, she began putting the potatoes and garlic around the chicken. She then scooped up another teaspoon of oil and poured it over the dish before returning it to the oven. With a quick glance over at the instruction, she set the timer for 30 minutes this time. She was now left to her own devices. She leant over, grabbed the remote, and switched on the television. The fact that there was a TV in the kitchen was a bonus, and she turned it down low so she could still hear the timer go off in thirty minutes.
Judge Judy was back on TV as though she lived on there. Cree was lounging against the kitchen table, catching Judge Judy wagging her finger at a young man who appeared to be on the verge of tears, but it may have been wishful thinking. After all, there's something special about watching a strong woman reduce a dirtbag to tears. Maybe it's the devil in me. She had a fleeting notion. In any case, she'd just straightened and turned to check the timer when the doorbell rang.
“Mother of Moons! Did you buy the whole shop?” She asked in surprise as soon as she opened the door.
“How much did this come to? I’m not made of - wait is that wine?” Now her tone went from surprise to anger. But he bet her to the punch, his face apologetic.
“It’s Otafuku Gai Sparkling Wine. For dessert. It’s fruity tasting, but refreshing and not at all strong. I gathered you don’t drink so I got weak alcohol that’s perfect for dessert.”
She opened her mouth to growl but he cut in again.
“You don’t even have to drink it. It's only for dessert. Part of the ingredients. I'm not going to drink that since it's too weak for me. Anyway,” he exhaled as he placed the bags on the counter.
“Dinner smells nice.”
Just then the stove beeped.
Cree stood there watching as he bent over and retrieved the tray from the oven, making a funny look as he did so.
“Wait a minute, that doesn't appear to be cooked.” He was perplexed.
“Yeah, but I'm following the directions.”
He nodded and put the radishes and spring onions into the dish, in and around the potatoes, without being asked. His eyes scanning the directions, he proceeded to slather everything in the fat before placing the roast back in for another 25 minutes.
“The potatoes and radishes should be golden and tender, and the chicken should be cooked through says the recipe." She said to him as she took out the ingredients he had just purchased.
Twenty-five minutes flew by quickly and she removed the chicken from the oven and covered it loosely with foil to allow it to cool. In the end, she didn’t bother using the stock as the juices tasted too rich for both of them. They simply squeezed over lemon juice and added the cooked peas. Eating in silence.
