Scent
Rank: "D", "C", "B", "A", "S"
Skill: TaiJutsu
Effect: This extraordinary special quality allows a creature to detect approaching enemies, sniff out hidden foes, and track by sense of smell.
Special: ---
Drawback: ---
Description: The creature can detect opponents within 10-meters by sense of smell. If the opponent is upwind, the range increases to 20-meters; if downwind, it drops to 5-meters. Strong scents, such as smoke or rotting garbage, can be detected at x2 the ranges noted above. Overpowering scents, such as skunk musk, can be detected at x3 normal range. When a creature detects a scent, the exact location of the source is not revealed—only its presence somewhere within range. The creature can take a movement to note the direction of the scent. Whenever the creature comes within 2-meters of the source, the creature pinpoints the source’s location. When finding Herbs and Animals (random), Scent may improve searching for them (must have Scent of object previously before searching). Learning "D" Rank allows the user to search for Common things, while "S" for Nearly Impossible. Each rank user learns increases chance of finding by 2% for the Rank of Herb, and increases per Rank thereafter. Example: At "S" Rank User gains 10% increase chance in finding Common Herbs and Animals but only 2% Increase for Nearly Impossible Herbs and Animals.
Limit: Must be an Animal, Fey, Monster, or Vermin. Innate Animal Jutsu.
Training C-Rank
Weakness. Lior couldn’t stand the feeling. Weakness. She could sense it in others, like a strong odor. Today she felt it all around her, touching her other senses like the overwhelming pressure of the deep ocean. It took a small amount of deep contemplation for her to realize where exactly the sense of weakness was coming from. It’s me. She thought, simultaneously disgusted and motivated to remove the stench and pressure of it from her presence. A million ideas ran through her mind, but at the end she settled on starting small. She had been told her sense of smell was extremely sensitive, so why not find a use for it?
Lior stood barefoot, deep in the woods of the Kinzoku district of the Sound village. She had left her white heeled boots behind several steps earlier, her slender feet pleased to be out the freshly purchase footwear which had been rubbing her heels in all the wrong ways. Instead, she felt the soft grass and dirt under her steps, which oddly to her, gave her a small measure of comfort. The winter air gave her a slight chill through the black coat that she was wearing, but the fabric was thin, and she could feel the chill creeping through the loose-fitting white turtleneck sweater she had on. Wishing the tight blue jeans that covered her legs gave her a bit more flexibility, she sat on the ground with her legs crossed underneath her. She was ready to begin.
Lior closed her eyes, trying her best to become more in tuned with her senses. She could feel the cold across her bare feet, and the breeze as it ran through her strawberry blonde hair like a chilled comb. The sound of leaves rustling under the light winter breeze invaded her ears, and she could almost taste the greenery that surrounded her. Taste. She thought, Almost there. Ever so slowly she tuned out the senses that didn’t matter. The rustling leaves began to feel further and further away, like the voice of a person whom you found annoying while you focused on something of greater importance. The chill of the winter air became less of a distraction as she mentally retreated into a zone she could only describe as her safe place. But the taste she allowed to remain, pushing the sense into overdrive until it fed into her sense of smell.
And slowly it did. Her nose became alive little by little, taking in all of the scents of the wooded area around her. The sweet sharpness of the grass at her feet and the leaves overhead… The heavy and thick scent of the dirt beneath the grass, and then the smell of light moisture in the air, undoubtedly from the cold winter breeze she was working hard to ignore. But there was something else. A smell she couldn’t quite place. She didn’t get a sense of danger from the soft and warm scent, but she was perplexed nonetheless.
There was also something different about it. Focusing all of her attention to her nose she could tell which scents felt stationary. Scents rolled off the trees, riding the breeze downwind to her nose. The sweetness of the grass around her wafted from the ground to her, giving her an odd sense of her own location within the woods. She could also smell the smooth scent of new leather, which she was sure was the unnatural smell of her boots sticking out like a sore thumb.
But while this unknown scent also rode in on the breeze, it also seemed to be fading to the left of her, as if whatever was the source of the smell was creating distance between them. Curious... She thought, attempting to figure out exactly what it could be. An animal! She realized. Curiosity began to bloom inside of her, driving her to figure out what would give off such a scent. Not wanting the animal to elude her until she found out what it was exactly, she rose from her seated position on the ground and opened her eyes.
Removed from the darkness of her mind, she now had a new objective. She was gonna chase it down and put her nose to the test. She took the few steps back to her heeled boots and slipped them on, not wanting to lose track of the newly purchased boots. Closing her eyes for a moment, she took a few sniffs of the air, and began slowly following the warm scent through the woods.
