Name: James “Jim” Bowie
Height: 6ft 2in
Weight: 180lbs
Age: 31 years
Gender: Male
Personality Alignment: Chaotic Good
Birth Country: Land of Earth
Village: Village Hidden in the Stone
Specialties: TaiJutsu Master, Weapon Specialist
Secondary Weapons: 1 C-Ranked Weapon Scroll (3), 1 Pair of Binoculars (2) [5/15]
Inside the scroll are: 4 Bowie Knives (4), 2 Double Bladed Kunai (4), 8 Handle-Less Kunai (4) [12/60]
Primary Weapon: Large Bowie Knife (same length as short sword, but same attributes and proportions as Bowie Knife)
Personality: Jim is what could be described as a rough-and-tumble gentleman. In private company, he is generally genial and polite, but he feels just as comfortable, if not more, in the middle of a raging brawl. His decently sized ego and independence make him a very “against the grain” kind of guy, and he wouldn’t hesitate to tell you that himself—then punch you in the face if you insult him for thinking that way. Honor and pragmatism run dually through his psyche.
He generally tries to do the “right thing”, but the definition of “right” runs fairly fast-and-loose. Jim can also be a bit of a drunk.
Appearance: The best description of Jim Bowie’s physical appearance is “intimidating.” Due to his height, muscularity, and subsequent heft, the man is quite formidable. He has short, thick brown hair and long mutton-chop sideburns that go to his jaw line. Jim also has light brown eyes.
At almost all times, Jim wears a long black overcoat that goes down to right above his knees, a white button-down shirt, black woolen pants, dark brown hiking boots, and a wide brimmed dark brown cotton hat. His weapons pouch is on his left hip, while the scabbard for his oversized knife sits on his right hip. He wears the Stone Village band around his right arm.
History: Jim was born on April 10th, as the 9th out of 10 children to his father and mother, Rezin and Elve Bowie. His family never stayed in one town during his childhood, moving from place to place—his father working odd jobs to support their large family. Even though they weren’t in the highest social standing, the Bowie children were very well educated, primarily by their mother—learning math, logic, history, geography, literature, several languages, and many other subjects. Out on their own, the children learned how to live in the dusty wild, learning how to fish, hunt, and wield weaponry. Jim was especially fond of a giant hunting knife, to which he dubbed his own name—the Bowie Knife. Jim even learned how to catch, rope, and tie wild animals.
During his young adult life, Jim and his brothers volunteered in military campaigns for the Land of Earth, but never really participated fully, as none of them were ninja. After a series of campaigns, the Bowie brothers decided to take on a surveying contract for the Land of Earth and traveled all over the country. This was only half-way legitimate though, as they used their positions to smuggle contraband whenever they reached a border. They were never caught, and ended up gaining a profit of 155,000 Ryo.
After they competed their surveying job for Earth, the brothers decided to temporarily settle down in a small town called Rapides about 10 miles away from The Village Hidden in the Stone. During their extended stay, they became involved with local politics, due to their wealth, and began endorsing candidates for various positions. One of these elections was for the town’s head of police, in which the brothers supported the incumbent’s opponent. The HoP, a man named Wright, was a bank director and had been instrumental in turning down a loan Jim applied for to fund a community center. After many physical and public confrontations between the two, Jim declared that he would begin to carry his enormous hunting knife while in town.
The next year, on September 19, Jim and Wright attended a duel on a sandbar outside of town, in which Jim supported one duelist and Wright supported the other. The duelists each fired two crossbow bolts at each other, and, as neither man had been injured, resolved the duel with a handshake. Other people attending, already riled up by the duel, and had various reasons for disliking each other, began fighting. Bowie was shot in the hip with a bolt, and after regaining his ground, drew his enormous knife, described by spectators as a butcher knife, and charged his attacker. The attacker hit Bowie over the head with his unloaded crossbow, breaking it and knocking Bowie to the ground. Wright, seeing an opportunity, shot at and missed the prone Jim, but then ran over, drew his sword cane, and impaled him. When Wright attempted to retrieve his blade by placing his foot on Bowie's chest and tugging, Jim pulled him down and disemboweled him with his knife. Wright died instantly, and Bowie, with Wright's sword still protruding from his chest, was shot again and stabbed by another member of the group. After the fight finally ended, the medics who had been present for the duel removed the crossbow bolts and patched Bowie's other wounds. Afterwards, those who had been there theorized as to Jim’s sudden abilities.
Word of the fight, which became known as the Sandbar Fight, reached the Hidden Village of Stone and described in detail Bowie's fighting prowess and his knife. A message was then sent to Bowie from the Stone Village, asking him to visit. There, he was analyzed, and it was discovered that he, in fact, had the ability to become a ninja. The Sandbar Fight was described as, “an awakening of hidden power.” Then, he was asked to serve his country as a Stone shinobi, to which Jim accepted—partly because of feelings of indebtedness to the Earth country, as his wealth had originated from fooling Sone ninja, and the fact that Wright’s supporters still lived in Rapides. Upon his induction as a Stone nin, he was given access to every conceivable knife or throwing weapon they had to choose his first arsenal from, as well as a list of fighting styles he could choose to participate in.
Currently, all of his former wealth is with his brothers, who are spending it like wild men and moved away from Rapides for the same reason as Jim.
And, yes, it turns out that he is the “Bowie” in "Bowie Knife." After his story got out, weapons producers obtained fairly accurate descriptions of the knife’s shape and size, and churned them out to ride the story’s popularity. Thing is, the knife actually preformed quite well under fire, so production continued after Jim’s initial 15 minutes of fame ended.
