{Flashback}
Chiaki and Yoshi spent the night under the tree, tending the small fire. The young man had suggested they do not put it out as there were many predators lurking about. He had passed a jaguar layer not far from here and he could hear the young cubs squeaking inside. The mother was no doubt out hunting and she would be coming back before daybreak. The last thing they wanted was to have her stumble into their little camp while they were sleeping. All the chakra and all the tricks in the book – and between the two of them, they had a lot – would save them from the primal strength of an angry jaguar.
They ended up sleeping in turns then and it was with relief that Chiaki accepted Yoshi’s offer that he would stand on guard first. She was utterly tired after the three day long trek and the last few hours, when she was by herself at the small fire, were exhausting mentally. Especially the last few minutes when she thought she was being stalked by someone or something, who then turned out to be Yoshi. He confessed with a slick smile to utilizing a technique on her that had learned from Hayate and which allowed him to alter her perception. The slither that she was hearing was not really there at all and it was something that Yoshi was able to implant in her mind, while he himself climbed the tree and prepared to surprise her from above.
“Master Hayate is a genius,” he concluded, his eyes full of awe and admiration.“I know,” Chiaki replied with a yawn that she couldn’t conceal. “I studied under him for some time but I never thought I benefited from his wisdom to the fullest extent. The academy puts may constraints on its teachers and I think master Hayate had found that frustrating.” “That’s why he left,” Yoshi nodded. “And that’s why he’s out here. He’s teaching us things that no one else dares to teach us and in ways that we can all understand.”
Chiaki soon went to bed, but Yoshi woke her up half way through the night with an apologetic smile. He was tired as well since he spent a good portion of the day travelling through the forest as well looking for Chiaki in the general area that Hayate had described to him. It wasn’t easy work since the forests were incredibly vast and it took much of his skill and expertise to finally locate her. The trick he had played on her drained him of chakra as well, and he was very fatigued now.
The girl felt rested so she had no trouble staying up for the rest of the night. She actually enjoyed it a little. The fire was crackling merrily before her and the woods around her didn’t seem as dark and mysterious as they did before. Perhaps it was Yoshi’s presence that mitigated that feeling and made her smile without even wanting to. Once in a while she would steal a small glance in his general direction and she watched him for a moment as he slept. His chest was moving up and down slowly as he breathed, relaxed, in a deep slumber.
Chiaki thought that it was a long time since she had seen a man this handsome and who had made her feel as he did. His boyish laughter was infectious, if a little immature, and she couldn’t help but smile when she remembered it. He was tall and attractive, and especially here, in the middle of nowhere and against the backdrop of some of the most unforgiving country in the world, he seemed like a breath of fresh air.
It helped, of course, that he had a way with words. Chiaki blushed again when she remembered the intensity of his stare and the words that he spoke. Was she really that beautiful? She knew she was pretty, even prettier than most girls in the academy. Most men would look at her a little bit longer before their gaze would venture somewhere else and if she was amidst a crowd of girls, chances were that she would always be the one first picked by a courageous young man to dance. She had always found it amusing, though sometimes it became a nuisance as some of her girlfriends were irritated and jealous by all the attention she was receiving.
Chiaki shrugged her shapely arms and chuckled lightly. With Yoshi it was different, she thought. He was the one who made her blush, not the other way around. She was the one that was rendered speechless. She awaited the morning with a bit of trepidation, not knowing what it would bring. For now, she resolved to simply enjoying the sight of Yoshi sleeping soundly beneath the tree.
