Leaving the tower behind, Sora followed the directions to his target, Kuja's Emporium. The mission did say a team was commissioned, but he would be enough for he had been trained in the ways of art. This mission called to him, perfect for his beginning.
Yet when he saw Kuja's Emporium he realized it would be just a tad more work than he thought. Also realizing that he did not know what needed to be painted he sought out Kuja, the supposed eccentric owner. From staff directions, he found Kuja easily as his flamboyant outfit gave him away. A brief discussion ensued in the pet section as he taunted the dogs unable to give the 8-yr old his attention.
Sora could only shake his head as he went back outside. He somehow managed to get the information he needed. It would be a masterpiece alright, a very odd masterpiece that would tax his skills. When Sora had asked for a design, Kuja had said, "I want the village with my store as the centerpiece; the village gates as the store entrance and roads paved with grass." Sora could only stare at the man as he had added,"Make it colorful! Nothing drab. You can use any of our spray paints."
His specialty was painting and ink, not spray paints but surely the principles were the same? Sora stood outside the store, dozens of aerosol cans around him. Removing the lid from a white spray he began squeezing the top carefully as nothing came out. Scanning the instructions, he shook the can and tried again as a white spray flowed onto the wall. As the smooth stone surface of the storefront was composed of different colors he would create a base for himself. Starting slow he slowly worked his way up and down the wall, using a borrowed ladder to reach the top pieces.
A dual purpose of coating the wall in at least one layer of white meant he could go over it in other colors. For now he tried to get a feel of the spray, how fast it came out and any tricks he could find. Holding the top down in one place he could get a solid mass of white while moving quickly brought forth a speckled pattern. The faster he moved, the wider the spray splashed out. Fine lines were not designed for a spray can. Yet he would find a way.
Beginning in the morning, an hour had already passed as he finished off the white spray can a decent feel for how the can worked. A second can of white to finish the job he made random designs against the stone, trying different shapes as an X would be darker in the center for the overlap. He had enough of a grasp with experimenting with the white paint that he felt he could try and move on to the main piece, the design the owner wanted. Still an odd request, he grabbed a sky blue spray paint so he could paint the sky. Going over the whitewall he had created, he painted the top three quarters in blue overriding the white. Some speckled white areas remained, they would be turned into clouds. Maintaining a steady spray became challenging as he had to keep stopping to move the ladder. He went over the area he had done blending the shades so it would appear seamless. With the sky done for the moment, he would try and create the buildings of the village beginning with the Emporium. It would be painted a vibrant purple. A block building he generated a darker layer by keeping the nozzle pressed down. Serving as the outline for the building, he stepped back to make sure the lines were straight and appeared like he wanted. A few small tweaks and the outline was done.
He moved to the next building, spraying a bright yellow outline of the Kage's tower. It was smaller than the emporium. Then there was the gate, a black stone outline sprayed around the door frame. Likewise, he continued with an outline of the Academy he just graduated from, painting its outline in dark red. Stepping back once again, he liked what he saw, getting a nice contrast of colors. For the left of the doorway he would paint the other buildings of the village an orange, and on the right a pink. The thick solid spray for outlines marked the buildings but he could not do detail. A light green served as a connector to the buildings. Impressive considering he used spray paint, he began filling in the details. All the buildngs would be shaded a lighter color, beginning from the bottom up. He messed up slightly on the Kage's tower but fortunately it was yellow and not overtly obvious. Instead, he would blend it. Light sprays for the center of the building and longer sprays to connect to the outline until it was a shaded building. For all the buildings Sora did this.
Next he tried to do fine details like windows and doors, which he knew would be a nightmare. They came out well in a brown color in the main bigger buildings. The smaller orange and pink buildings he could do tiny dots which worked well enough. The details were not the same as a painters stroke but Kaju wanted it all spray painted. Hours had passed as he worked. The setting sun over the horizon cast its colorful hue on his work. Cans lay strewn about as he went in to get the owner.
When the excited owner came out, his jaw dropped. He loved the spray painting. Sora did not think it was his best work but he had followed the man's instructions. Colors contrasting everywhere and the principal buildings of the village in the forefront, it met with what the mission description had said. Sora thought the owner would have wanted something representing his business, but he shouldn't judge. A mission was a mission.
Getting the man's signature of approval, Sora cleaned up his mess, examining the cans he used. He had a couple of his own that he had yet to use and this exercise served as good practice. Shading, the extent of detail possible, how spray paint colors mingle were all essential techniques that would bring confidence in his next spray painting assignment. With nothing else to do, Sora would head to the Kage's tower.
