Mission [1/4]
As Zeljin stepped out of the Hokage Tower, his mind fumed with virulence. Why, oh why had he given in to Hanakaren yesterday and helped her? Now she had gone to the Hokage and asked specifically for Zeljin to help her plant some decorative flora around Leaf Village. This was hardly a mission befitting a Shinobi of his talent!
Hanakaren Wakaminzoku was waiting outside, leaning demurely on a wooden cart laden with plants and young trees potted up in black dirt; a cadre of garden tools also resided in the cart. "Oi!" she greeted. "Yet another sunny day in the Leaf Village."
"Why me?" Zeljin growled sourly. "I don't like this kind of work."
"Oh, but you're so good at it," she teased. "Besides, your Falling Rain technique will come in handy. And also..." At this point she adopted a dangerously seductive pose, left hand on her hip, right index finger in her mouth. "...you get to spend time with me!"
Zeljin threw his right arm up over his eyes. "Don't you even think about using Sexy Jutsu on me again," he warned.
Standing up straight, Hanakaren laughed and replied, "Hey, I'm just joshing around. Lighten up a little, will ya? Sheesh!" She turned around and began to walk away. "Anyhow, these things won't get planted in the ground by themselves! Let's get started."
She grabbed the handles of the cart and began pushing it down the smooth dirt road. Following a short distance behind, Zeljin couldn't help but admire her physical strength. Although she was only twelve years old and her muscular structure hadn't fully developed, she was already strong enough to push around a cart with approximately two hundred pounds of plants, trees, tools, and soil. Zeljin couldn't even come close to matching that. Perhaps it ran in the Wakaminzoku bloodline...
"We're here!" Hanakaren exclaimed. "The first of our two stops." She took a shovel and tossed it at Zeljin. "C'mon, Zeljin, let's get to work!"
Catching the tool adroitly, Zeljin gauged the surrounding environment. They hadn't gone far at all; they were standing by the wall blocking access to the bridge leading to the Hokage Tower. Admittedly, it was a rather drab sight, those plain, undecorated tan walls, with nothing to introduce life to the scenery. It was a good plan to spruce things up with some flowers...the boy just wished he didn't have to be a part of the plan.
"Where do I start?" he queried.
Hanakaren pointed toward the guard tower on the right side of the bridge gate. "That side'll do," she replied. "Just keep planting flowers until you run out. Follow this color scheme: red, yellow, blue, yellow; and make sure you don't plant them too far apart."
"Got it," Zeljin replied. Taking out one of the plastic-potted blue flowers from the cart, he added, "Are you going to leave the cart in the middle of the road?"
"No, silly, I'll keep it on my side."
"All right, then." Zeljin hoisted his shovel, held the red daisy-like flower to his chest, and set off for the right guard tower.
"Have fun!" Hanakaren called whimsically, and the Shinobi silently swore at her. Was she deliberately trying to infuriate him. It was bad enough to have one annoying person to deal with...
Don't think about her, for God's sake! Just hurry up and plant the damn flowers!
Standing at the base of the guard tower, Zeljin took his shovel and shoved it into the ground; or rather, he tried to shove it into the ground, only to get in about an inch deep. Annoyed, he ground the tips of his high-heeled boots onto the shovel, only to discover that while his feet could run around well enough in high heels, they weren't about to let him apply any meaningful leverage. In other words, the shovel was entirely useless for him.
Fortunately, there was more than one way to get the job done...
