Home, sweet home. Or something like that. He was a long way off from calling his dusty little cottage "home", but for now it was a fixture he could always return to.
Sitting around, so utterly bored that he started digging trenches in the table with is fingernail, he eventually became so stir-crazy that he allowed himself to drop from his seat and lay face-first on the dirt floor. It was then that inspiration struck him harder than he had struck the floor. With a sudden burst of chakra, he disappeared beneath the surface of the old sod in an instant and lingered there for a moment. Suddenly realizing that he was just about completely useless just laying in one position, but simultaneously being unable to do anything about it, he put some effort into pressing the earth behind him, and found his way inexorably blocked. So, he was obviously doing something wrong, and a quick experiment showed that the soil around him was as solid as it was when he was standing on it. No pushing through that, of course. There had to be a way.
Toru wondered if it would be possible to use the same wavelength that softened the soil to get him this far could be used to remove the impediment from his path. Although pushing it directly forward would prove to be a challenge, as it much preferred to go out in an ellipse from his body and evenly surround him, but eventually he managed to gently coax it to extend in the general direction of his head. And with that accomplished, it was an easy task of reversing the process directly behind his feet and pushing himself forward to his success. Unfortunately, trouble arose when he found that he could only go so far forward before the ground became stiff again and further blocked his movement. A fact that he discovered rather rudely when he was launched forward by more force than he expected and detected the wall with his nose first. Clearly this was going to take some fine tuning.
His next umpteen attempts all succeeded. . . At ending precisely the way his first one had. He ended up failing so many times that it bordered on insanity before finally resigning to the fact that he was doing it wrong. The problem was simply that he kept outrunning his own chakra flow, leaving it without enough time to move the dirt out of his way and ending with the aforementioned result. Therefore, he decided, he either needed to move slower or put out more chakra ahead of him. Well, he decided to try the latter first, focusing a good majority of his concentration on the ground that would be his path. Lo and behold, careening forward at the same speed as the last several times, he got an extra inch where his chakra was able to keep up before smashing his countenance in the sod yet again. Thankfully, he had braced himself, and he was used to the pain, otherwise he might very well have broken something.
As for the former trial that he had yet to catastrophically fail at, he didn't have very much success with that one, either. Sure, he could inch forward and a snails pace and plow through without a scratch, but frankly he could walk faster and spend less energy. However, whenever he tried to increase his speed by just a little bit, he was vaulted onward like a pebble in a slingshot. After a bit of practice he was able to gain a bit more control over his speed, but still found himself dangerously close to the edge of his chakra field. Then an idea struck him, and while moving forward at a safe pace, he pushed his chakra even farther ahead of him and felt more relaxed. So, he sped up a little more and pushed his chakra a little farther forward, the two forming a beautiful gap of safety between his tender, bleeding nose and the solidity of the ground. However, a straight line wouldn't get him anywhere except caught.
