This was not an assignment, it was not a challenge, and it was something she wanted, that was very rare. Nishiko did not want or crave as others did but for once she had a passion, she wanted to learn this and make it her own. I watched her, she did not know. Sheets of paper lay before her, scattered and haphazard. Her hands expertly picked out a likely sheet it was a pale cream paper patterned with golden swirls. Her fingers elegantly folding the paper into two, her nails creasing the paper perfectly before she pushed the loose sheets of paper aside.
What a strange method of training. She continued her folds, her eyes set on the task, taking notice of nothing else. She continued to fold, meticulously slow. Her nails made precise creases, what was it that she was creating? After much time had passed she held up her finished work, balanced delicately in the palm of her hand was a perfectly folded paper crane. I moved from the shadows and spoke. “What are you doing?” A smile crossed her lips and sounded in her voice. “If you make a thousand your wish will come true.” She replied as she caused the birds wings to move by tapping the tale.
She had never made one before, I was sure of this but something in the exactness of her creation made her seem to be an expert. Before I could continue the conversation she had grabbed a square colored like lilacs. Again she began to fold, a different pattern this time, something more complicated. The thin sheet of paper stretched from its normal blandness to something three dimensional as petals folded outwards, she had created a perfectly formed lily. She was amazing this girl. Before I could pass a compliment she was back to a teal sheet of paper, folding a crane again, even I could recognize the pattern.
It was a work of art to watch her gently creasing the paper as she created without notice for her surroundings. She worked like a master, perhaps a hair faster than before. She was already becoming familiar; the pattern was in her mind not her eyes. She required no references or any such things, she simply worked. The smile curled upon her lips showed pleasure in her work, not the normal set determination in her eyes. Another crane was made and placed on the shelf next to the original; she looked at it lovingly for a moment before taking another sheet of cream colored paper before her.
This time she was not making anything she had made before. She folded a new pattern, a strange one. She continued to fold as if she had spent her entire life doing this. Once more a three dimensional object would begin to form… a box. A perfectly formed box that seemingly had no opening, I could imagine her leaving things in these and daring me to get it out without tearing or damaging the paper. What skill did this child… not a child a grown woman, what skills did she possess? What would she possess? She continued to fold as if nothing else in the world mattered.
