0.60.
He was faster than she was.
The realization of this very notion sunk in with a devastating blow, dread seeping through her veins as she continued on her flight. The placement of the trees seemed planned to overthrow her desperate efforts to escape, as she made her way through the forest with an impressive speed. She wasted no breath, and ignored the unberable pain coursing throughout her muscles. I can win, she pressed. Although she knew she could not.
Soon she could hear him gaining, his footsteps mere yards away. "Damn it," she cursed, her adrenaline surging at an alarming rate. Her fingers intermingled with one another for a blur of a moment, and then; she could no longer be seen by the naked eye. The kunoichi smiled as her pursuer let escape a few choice words of frustration, and then frowned as he muttered some unintelligible words.
"Invisibility?! Good, Zamarron, but not good enough!" And then something extraordinary happened; the man sprouted wings, and the girl knew then that it was over. She heard the swoosh of a large wingspan, and then suddenly her back was on fire, and she stumbled, her landing hard and unforgiving on the dewy forest floor. With horror she reached for her wounds, and screamed as she felt the hot, sticky crimson envelope her fingers. Tears streamed down her porcelein cheek; at least fifteen senbon had found their way deep into her skin.
"HIGASHI!" she shrieked, her voice filling the trees with a frightening song. She rolled onto her side in defeat, writhing there in agony as the latter approached her, a satisfied grin plastered upon his countenance. His grey wings were folded now, but with a certain pride that couldn't be ignored. "Ah, Zamarron," he said, running a colloused hand through his shaggy raven locks. "I see you are in need of assistance."
She whimpered in response, clutching at her back. "Only," he continued, making his way toward her, bending down to place a single hand against her forehead. "You were so determined at evading me. I'm not sure you even desire my aid." They locked eyes, then; Higashi's, cold, lfeless ones of blue, blue ice, and Zamarron's, amber ones of desperation. "Please," she mouthed, her voice gaining strength as a whisper. "I do," she pleaded.
"You do what?" Higashi questioned most politely. The vixen shuddered with the pain that plagued her physique, but then answered weakly, "I do desire aid." She hated herself for humoring her arch enemy, and hated herself even more for having put herself in a situation where she would need his help. "Alright, now hang on," the man said, withdrawing a bottle from his pack, before uncapping it and placing it over his charge's injuries. "This might sting." Then the bottle was turned, and the substance poured over Zamarron's wounds.
A knife seemed to have been thrusted into her back, and as it pierced, it dug itself deeper and deeper into her skin, tearing away at her wounds. Eventually, though, the knife ceased it's senseless destruction, and, in fact, Zamarron felt better. Almost at peace. Having been clawing at her back during this process, she could feel that the blood flow had been halted, and that in actuality she no longer had any wounds.
She sat up, incredulous. "How did you do that?" she demanded, asking of not the potion, for she knew of it's healing properties, being a professional herbalist, but of the senbon. She knew that Higashi was no expert with the weapon.
Higashi sighed, wiping away what was left of her tears. "It's a technique called Shiraha Boppatsu no Jutsu. They teach to you within the clan. Gran didn't entail it to you?"
Zamarron scoffed, rolling her eyes. "You know Gran was too old to teach the techniques of our clan. Her wings are frail and too delicate. I learned what I know on my own."
"Well," the man smiled delicately, impressed with his charge's independent spirit. "I could teach it to you if you'd like," he offered.
The villainess' interest peaked at this, her brow raised in surprise. Her enemy, becoming her teacher? Unheard of. "You can start by explaining; I think I've already had enough of a taste of it."
"Okay," he said, standing up, stretching out his wings to their full span. "As you probably already know, we can release our feathers at will." He looked at her questioningly, and she nodded in reply. "Good. This is done like so." He propelled his right wing forward, releasing a carnival of grey feathers that cascaded directly over Zamarron, bringing on a fit of sneezes. "Now, as you probably don't know, we can solidify each feather into a metal substance. This gives us the ability to form virtually any small weapon we desire, including my personal preference, senbon.
"Understanding so far?" he asked.
"I think so," replied Zamarron.
