Falnyr walked slowly through the raging storm his eyes staring straight on ahead looking for any kind of shelter. A shiver spread through his body as the snow whipped around him, he tightened the cloak around him trying to shield himself from the snowflakes that stung his face. The artist wished he was anywhere but in this frozen wasteland, even the rain that sometimes dogged the leaf village was better than this everlasting cold. Through the howling wind a roar echoed out across the tundra putting Falnyr on guard, he quickly drew out one of the crossbows fixed to his back and loaded it with a bolt rack.
He stood still crossbow pointed at where the noise had come from, after a few seconds of tense waiting the creature that had made the noise appeared. The bear was massive, its white pelt blending in with the snow almost perfectly. It let out another roar and charged, Falnyr tried to take aim at the charging beast but his nerves betrayed him. The bolt went wide flying past the bear and out into the blinding snowstorm. The bear swiped at Falnyr’s head and he only managed to avoid it by quickly ducking under it. He jumped backwards as the bear swung once again ready to take his next shot at the beast.
He took his next shot as the beast charged trying his best to aim at the enraged creature but once again he panicked. The bolt soared high this time flying over the bear’s head, it wasn’t even phased and before he knew the animal was there once again. A smile was on his face as the adrenalin rushed through him, he dodged out of the way of the next attack and threw himself backwards trying to put enough distance between himself and the creature. He tried to aim again as the bear began to come closer once more, it was all for nothing though the bolt once again missed the creature.
The next attack barely missed and Falnyr staggered slightly as he was caught off balance. He couldn’t keep this up for much longer. He tried to aim the crossbow once more as the beast charged once more, desperately he tried to smooth over the fear that had rooted itself in his heart. It was no use. He failed again. The crossbow bolt whistled past the creature completely missing it, the medic swore under his breath knowing that success here could mean life or death. The beast swung again with all the force that it could muster and this time, it hit.
Lines of fire flared up across the ninja’s side as he was sent tumbling to the ground. Fear shone clearly in his eyes now as the beast came lumbering towards him, ready to deal the final blow. The inevitability of death seized Falnyr now as he had one last desperate attempt. It took all his will to quell the fear and panic that ran through his veins, but somehow he managed it. With a steady hand he took aim at the beast’s head. He pulled the trigger. Time seemed to move in slow motion for the medic as he knew what happened next would decide his fate. The bolt thudded into the beast’s skull. For a moment it still stood there almost as if it was confused about what had just happened. But then it flopped onto the floor. A deep sigh escaped from Falnyr as he looked at the blood-stained creature lying there helplessly. Relief washed over him driving away the fear that had overridden him moments before. He attached the crossbow to his back once again before heading back out into the storm.
