The moonlight beamed down on the shinobi as he walked through the forest. His long dark hair came down to his nose, giving him a small window of viewing. Luckily for Kensei's sake, he contained it for the most part with a small ponytail that was used to gather up most of the ever flowing hair and was tied off at the top. His hair was an onyx like color, giving little to no appearance in the dark and only made visible by the moon that stood in the dead night air. His eyes matched the color of his hair. They were lifeless and filled with despair and loneliness. Only when he was upset would the shinobi's eyes transform into the deep hating shinobi eyes of the Uchiha. The blood red eyes and the black tomoes gave their appearance as the moonlight shimmered on them, making them the only thing anyone could see in such darkness. His nose and mouth made to be normal by the rest of his face and making him a somewhat attractive male. Kensei would be more attractive if his face would show a smile every once and a while. He hated doing that.
His clothing was different than most. A black robe covered the majority of his body. Kensei mainly left it opened, only to be held by a white sash that was wrapped around himself similar to that of a toga. A yellow trim could be seen if anyone looked at his chest, showing the pale skin of the shinobi and the openings of the robe, only to match the yellow buttons that went along side the trim. Around his neck, the shinobi wore a necklaces, the only thing he had left from the one true person he had feelings for. It was a memento of their love and how it had been stolen from him.It hung close, only to have a small picture of the couple hidden inside its make shift compartments. The toga like sash that the man wore would wrap around his body for the most part. Typically, this held him down, making him not as fast in movement but made him more puppeteer like. The sash came down from the sholder, leaving a little piece of left over cloth to hang. The sash also made for a good cape that hung from the back, keeping him in covered for a majority of the time and kept his body warm.
The lower extremities were also similar to that of the rest of his attire. The robe hung to about the calf's of the body, keeping him manly covered with one piece of clothing. Underneath, however, he wore long pants that covered his legs and groin well. The onyx like pants matched the robe perfectly, making it a simple matching attire fix. Under all the robes and sashes' a small belt buckle with the sound village crest stayed sturdy, keeping his pants from falling. This could be seen as clear as day when Kensei took off his robe to perform taijutsu techniques or whenever he trained. His feet were covered with nicely worn boots that allowed the ninja to stay well protected yet look fashionable to others. His pants remained tucked into the boots and created a look of holy like manner.
...Personality
Kensei's state of mind now is a total 180 from what he was as a child. As a child, Kensei was always a person of fun and excitement. He was full of courage, smiles and energy. His mind was very youthful and in experienced. As a child of the forest, Kensei was always out and about, learning about the forest and exploring the way of animals and flowers. His mind explored many different aspects of the forest and enjoyed all the animals he played with. He loved his family who, at the time, were a huge part of his life. He learned much about love from his mother and grandmother before their deaths. His early life was entirely made up of smiles and fun which would only change once he was found by fellow sound shinobi.
After his acceptance into the village hidden in the sound, Kensei became more of a strategist. His mind went from an adolescence child like mind and became that of a strong shinobi who enjoyed to take careful plans and execute them with ease. His puppets became his new family, along with the few relationships he crafted with the other shinobi. His teammates were his life. He died and bleed for them only to see them smile. His techniques were a tool the man used to make his friends safe and strong as they needed so that missions could be preformed and completed. Kensei grew to love a women and enjoyed her presence more than the sun itself. She became his world and life.
The shinobi's personality, as of now after the death of his love, has changed yet again. He is cold and distant. Still, he retains his sharp intellect and amazing strategist like mind but he hold everyone who was once close to him away. He is goal driven to bring his love back to life. His puppets are his only true family. He crafts them with more love than many others have ever seen from the master craftsman. Like his team once was, his puppets are his blood and sweat. He has become that of the master puppeteer who uses deception and trickery to persuade anyone and anything to his liking. His heart is no longer accepted as a heart but more as a cold killing machine that thinks of nothing but to accomplish his goal of curing a broken heart.
...History
The rain beat down on the puppeteer, like drops of tears from the gods above. His eyes watered as he looked down on the ground before him. There, in the dirt turned mud, laid his one and only love. Her body cold and pale. The elegant face that he had once kissed under the clear moon sky now lifeless with her eyes closed. It was his fault she was this way. If he had only been stronger, Kensei would have stopped the onslaught that came before all of this. His face looked like that of a child who had gotten his first cut or scrape. He had been crying for the last hour, her face covered in a mixture of rain, blood and the salty tears that had fallen from the hung head of the Uchiha whose eyes were still active. The blood's redness on the young girls face could only been seen by the dancing creatures of the night along with the eyes that would stop them in their tracks. Kensei's eyes had begun to grow dark with anger and evil. The events leading up to this were not too hard to explain. In short, a mission of simple design went wrong. Very wrong. It happened so quickly that Kensei began to wonder what exactly happen. Why was the field cluttered with everyone's dead bodies? What happened to a simple escort mission? Why did she have to die? These questions ran through the boys head like water to a stream. They were quick and powerful, leaving him to be the whirlpool caused by the aftermath. Not only was he spinning from the confusion, he was just as destructive as the swirling water. He tried to make sense of it all. He could only start from the beginning.
Kensei Ushitoshi was a simple child at first. Born into a world that many knew of, poverty. His mother, an outcast by many and some in which considered a whore for doing what she did. Still, she was a loving mother. Deep within the country of the claw, sat a small shack that was nothing more than the home for Kensei's mother and his grandmother. On the faithful day of birth, nothing but screaming could be heard. The once beautiful woman would erupt in pain as the boy began to make his way in the world. The sound of pans flipping over and things hitting the wall was nothing short of usual for women giving birth to children. It was chaotic and gorry but in the end, life would be brought into the world. Mizumi Ushitoshi would give birth to Kensei, named after his grandfather who had died previously due to old age. That entire night, she held her child in her arms, hoping and praying for a better life than the one she had to live through. Mizumi and her mother lived in a small village. The three of the Ushitoshi family was one of 4 families that inhabited the area. They all lived together, helping each other with food, chores but feeling the threat of poverty and the constant onslaught of near by ninja travels.
Kensei's early years were filled with physical activity. Being the only child in the village, he was often able to move about and play in the woods, making his life a simple joy of playfulness. He climbed the trees and swam in the streams. He made friends with the near by animals and nature itself. He was like most kids really. He learned on his own. He didn't need a fancy teacher to help him. Instead, he learned from experience and wasted no time trying new things out. His hands were always filthy with dirt and his body was always covered in cuts. It was the life of a child in the forest. Day in and day out, his mother would get on to the boy for traveling too deep into the forest. Often she and Kensei would clash, only bringing a smile to the grandmother's face who understood the love of a child and their parent. Even though she fought with her stubborn son, she loved him for every minute and knew that he would be in good hands after she passed on. Her health was deteriorating and as time passed, Kensei would lose his mother to illness. After her passing, his grandmother, heartbroken and aging, would pass on as well. In the short years of his youth he went from having a family, to having nothing. His mother and grandmother had passed on and his father was no where to be found. With that, Kensei would decide that the small village was nothing more than a stepping stone in his wake. After he buried his remaining family, he went off into the real world. He was only 8 years old.
The forest was still. The sound of chirping covered the blue sky, leaving only a sign of life in the wild to be that of its critters. As the day passed, a small leaf began to vibrate. It was barely able to hang off with the rustle of wind before it finally fell of with the feeling of a thick vibration. Kensei landed on the branch and gazed out. He could smell something fierce in the wind. The boy was only 9 years old. He had lived in the forest for exactly one year, living off the land and in one with nature. He was close to something interesting as the sounds of animals fell off in the distance. A smell of sulfur filled his nose as he covered it up with a torn piece of cloth. Flames began to erupt in the distance. It seemed as if something was going on in the distance. For the last year, Kensei had been traveling north, towards the stone country. Indeed, the claw country was small but nothing more of a few hundred miles covered the area. He kept going on into the northern place. Kensei figured he was close to the border for this type of activity. In the distance, Kensei hid behind a branch, only a 100 feet from the battle that had gone on. It seemed as if a small group of Ninja were battling another group. The child of the forest had never seen such a thing. Sure, his mother had taught him of the outside world and what it had to offer. Ninjutsu and the shinobi way where something that he had only heard of. A fantasy in his head really until today. He gazed out and watched the battle, getting closer and closer.
It seemed as if it was a battle between that of two separate villages. Their clothing was slightly different but similar in gear. They could be distinguished by the marks on their headbands that they wore. It looked as if it was a three on three fight. The ones with headbands that had the symbol of a sound melody came in from the west while a the headbands with a rock came in from the north. The melody simple guys threw metallic blades at their opponents with ease, only to be countered by the same on the other end. It was an interesting match up. Fire flew from the lips of one person on the sound side after he made a bunch of weird handsigns with his left and right. It was interesting to see how easily this was all for them. Kensei watched, hoping that he might get the chance to find out more about them. The sound guys seemed to have the upper hand. Kensei could deduce that the Stone ninja were simply stuck because they required to be up close and personal. It wouldn't be long before the Sound ninja wiped them out with ease. It was an interesting approach as the Stone ninja ran away towards the north, back to their border.
Before his eyes, stood three shinobi. Their looks were interesting in design. The first, was a older gentleman. Before them stood a blond woman who seemed to be pressing her hands on a wounded man. The woman was well built. Her hair flowed with golden threads and her body was well made by the ones who created her. Her attire matched the other men and her prowess was nothing short of impressive. Looking over in the corner of the area, Kensei could see a tree that had been smashed in by her bare fist, an impressive feat. The man on the ground had long black hair with tight glasses wrapped around his face. Kensei could only judge so much on the man's abilities, seeing as how this man stayed hidden for a majority of the fight. A piece of metal had hit him in the leg, causing him to fall from his position. It wasn't so surprising. The man carried a large crossbow that he seemed to be aiming at the stone ninja who ran away. The last man wore similar clothing. His face was bright red from what looked like sun burn. In his mouth, a cigarette poked out lit of course from the fire that had erupted from the users mouth. His silvery hair didn't match his age which had to be his early 20s if even that. The three of them seemed to do well as they recuperated from the battle at hand. Kensei looked around more and more until suddenly, everything was black.
He awoke. His hands had been bounded to the back of a tree which held him down well. His black hair hung over his face, keeping the child concealed for a bit before he began to look up. The Sun danced in his face, blinding him at first and making it hard to see the four shadowy figures that lurked in front of him. Three stood up while another one, the size of a child, stood in front of him. He couldn't make it out at first but his eyes slowly adapted. When Kensei could see again, he looked into the eyes of his captors. The three shinobi he had been watching from a distance stood over him looking like they were ready to do whatever needed to be done. The fourth, was a new face. Kensei looked at the child like structure and made out the face of an old man. His hair was kind of scraggly, covered in white which matched his mustache and bear quiet nicely. A smile filled his face as he looked at the boy with ease. The old man dressed in similar attire as his shinobi counterparts who stood and watched the old man with a respectful eye. Kensei could tell instantly that the old man must have been in charge. They would stop nothing at words. “Who are you, young one?” The old man asked, looking into the eyes of Kensei. His voice was that of a typical grandfather like attitude. “Are you with the Stone?” His questions came quick. Kensei could hardly keep up. He asked so many in such a quick amount of time. “I don't know anything!” The boy called out. His eyes were intense as he stared a the old man with hatred in his eyes. The boy had been alone for a year. His mother and grandmother died due to illness, his heart had closed up a little.
The old man smirked for a second at the boy's fight. “Oh! You should mind your manners, youngster” The old man said with a smile on his face, looking into the glorious sun. The three low ranked individual's didn't look amused. The voice of one of the men came out with scruff and deep. “What should we do with this kid, captain?” The glasses wearing shinobi said as he turned away from the child. “The boy is probably an orphan in these areas. There isn't a camp for miles.” A puff of smoke erupted from the lungs of the other gentleman. “That should be apparent, Hitsugaya. We kill him. Leave no witnesses.” Kensei's eyes widened at the sound of death. Die? There was no need for that. He didn't want any trouble. In fact, if it were up to him, he'd head back the way he came. “Shao, he's just a kid. We can't do that...” The young woman said as she peered at the smoking man. “Kid or not, he knows who we are. Anyone knows that we are sound nin. If we don't kill him, the stone nin will once they return. His tracks are not that strong.” The old man held up his hand. His fingers spread apart slightly to show that he meant for everyone to stop with the talking. The captain's eyes stared at the boy and stood to understand him little by little. He and the boy's eyes locked for only a second before that captain would issue his order. “Shao, is right.” A look of shock covered the girl's face and Kensei's. “But.... I can't kill a child. Instead, we will take him back to the village. Judging from his clothing and scratches, I'm willing to guess you've been in this forest for about a year now. That's pretty impressive for a child to survive on this terrain. If he has that much spunk perhaps we can use him in the village but I want him knocked out for the trip.” He said as he nodded to the female who nodded, came over to Kensei and applied pressure to the back of his leg. Again, everything went black.
Kensei's eyes woke up yet again. This time however, he was laying in some sheets. His body was covered with warmth of blankets and laying over him was the young woman that had been there to watch over him. Out of the four, hers was the only name that he didn't really know. She had been the one who didn't want to kill him from the beginning but still, he didn't trust her. Kensei kept still for a second, trying to figure out what exactly he needed to do. He looked to the side and found that the window to his right was slightly open. Kensei flipped to his side quickly, his movement awakening the girl who was laying on top of him. She reached out to grab the child only to have missed the child. Kensei jumped from the window, not knowing how far it was. He would find a way out. Little did he know, it was a ten story drop. The woman reached her hand out and grabbed on to his arm. He was lucky that she was there. After a few seconds of fighting, Kensei was eventually suppressed. His body pinned between the floor and the woman. It was only then that the old man would walk in. He stopped and laughed as he looked at the two. “That's enough Megumi. I'll take the boy from here.” And with those words, the woman removed herself from atop of the boy. The old man went on to explain to the child that he was to become a villager of the sound village and would participate under the intense studies of himself. The old man would be the one in charge of Kensei and would be the decider of his fate.
For the next four years of his life, Kensei would be dedicated to learning the ways of the shinboi arts. At first, the captain, also known as Yamamotto, would teach Kensei how to mold chakra in the basic of ways. Creating little effects here and there were the simple ways of learning everything. He created it all based on what he learned and saw. Most of the other children in the village had learned all of this from birth and had dealt with it on a day to day basis. Kensei, on the other hand, picked it up through training and he did so quickly. It was as if it was in his blood. He focused mainly on puppetry, his master's, Yamamotto, signature form of battle. The art of containing a puppet was something that most didn't really understand how but those who could control chakra well knew it easily. Kensei fell in love with this art. It was as if he could only learn so much from the master but learned much more through the art. He grew to change his mind and body to form around the puppet and as such, he continued on with its ways. As Kensei grew older, he matured, and with maturity comes other aspects of life and love.
Pretty soon, Kensei had ripened to the age of 13. At this point, he had been given the award of Genin and was now treading on the feet of adult hood. His first day of his Genin life would be one that the young shinobi would remember for the rest of his life. There he stood, underneath the tree in the middle of the forest in which he had been in over a hundred times just to do multiple things for training reasons. His puppet strapped around his back as if he was some sort of mule himself. He was the first to arrive as he awaited for his new teammates to meet him in the new area. Kensei was unsure of who was on his team but in the end he wanted to make sure he was one of the better ninja. He had begun to enjoy the ninja life and his master would be pleased to have a chunnin under his command in the near future. Kensei squatted under the tree and his body positioned in the shade. As the time went on, Kensei would move up and down, extending his legs throughout the day, making it so that his body would stay active.
In the distance, the puppeteer could see someone approach the meeting spot. The first member of the team that would join him was a more built member of the Sound forces. Although he was still a genin, the boy was known for his taijutsu efforts. On his hip, a katana swung back and forth as he walked. His hand over it as if he was going to cause some trouble at all times but in reality the boy was more concerned with the hilt being warm. The genin was Toshi. He was an extremely talented swordsman, one that many in the genin feared to be up against. Toshi was well known indeed but more importantly, he was a good friend of Kensei's. Ever since Kensei had joined the village, Toshi had always been a friend. They smirked as they saw each other. Kensei didn't know that Toshi would join the team he was on but figured it would be a good thing since they knew their strengths and weaknesses well. “Good to see someone on my team is somewhat skilled.” Toshi said with a smirk on his face and his eyes closed as he leaned against the tree with the shade as his back. Even if the two were friends, the rivalry was still hanging in the background. “What do you mean 'somewhat'? We both know I'd win in a full out fight.” Kensei said as he popped up for a second. The two beamed at each other before laughing it off.
The next member of the team quickly approached. Kensei's nose puckered up as the smell of sweet flowers entered his nose. It was almost immediately that Kensei knew the third member of the team. Hinata, a young medical nin and a secret crush of Kensei's, rounded the corner as he sprung up from his position. Her beauty and might were incredible as always. Hinata and Kensei had grown close over the last four years. This was all due to Yamamotto being her grandfather and the young girl known as Megumi being her older sister. All of which made them know each other well. They smiled as they saw each other in the distance. Similar to Toshi, her skills were amazing. At her age, being able to perform hard healing jutsu's was nearly unheard of. She had amazing understanding of the body and more importantly, the chakra system of that body. The squad seemed to be quiet talented and perhaps one of the best teams out there.
As the young girl walked further, Kensei would notice the last member of the team and the captain of the genin squad. This was a face Kensei knew well. Jounin level shinobi, Hitsugaya, was well known for his ability to handle a crossbow and had the marksmen ship of the best in the sound village. This was also one of the men that Kensei had seen on his first day of the shinobi life. It wasn't surprising that the puppeteer would be paired with a shinobi of such a high caliber. In fact, it was almost appropriate. Gaining trust with a shinobi village was hard work. In fact, master Yamamotto had to beg them to take Kensei as a Academy student. Hitsugaya was probably there to watch over the child more so than to teach. It was fine either way. He had close connections with most of the ninja in the area and the fact of the matter was that nothing would change that. And thus the story of Team Nine would start.
And for a while, everything went great. They went on missions, grew to respect one another and Kensei even got accepted as a full citizen of the Sound village. It was great. Everything had worked out for the shinobi in the end and yet, life wasn't that easy. Everything was complicated and as time went on so would his emotions. His best friend would always be just that. Toshi and Kensei grew to be much stronger than ever before. His blade and his puppets went together like the wind and the sky. His squad leader and him would get along well, devising stratagies to capture points of interest and complete missions with ease. The skills kensei would learn from Hitsugaya would increase his puppetry skills in such an advance way that no one could ever meet him when it came to stratagy and planning. The biggest relationship builder, however, was that with Hinata. For the first couple of years, Hinata and Kensei seemed to remain friends, he would help her out and she would fix him up. It was like every teammate scenario but in the end, those feelings would grow to be more and more until finally the two were in love. He had never felt this way about anyone before. She made his heart beat quicker, his body broke into sweats and even made him nervous. It was only a matter of time before the two would become an item.
Life is never simple. All would change on one fate driven night. An urgent call had come from the upper levels in the shinobi branch. An advance team was needed to escort a feudal lord to the village. The lord, who had a history of gambling problems, seemed to be in the heat of being tracked by mercenaries. The team was assigned to help him return to the village unharmed and before day break. As such, the group known as Team nine would be assigned to the mission. They traveled in the dead of night. Each one focused on every aspect of the mission. Their feet barely touching the branches of the trees gave the squad little to no detection of their movement. They stood waiting over the edge of the village, looking down as the night sky purged away any light except for the moon. It seemed that the Feudal lord was backing his belongings, waiting for the ninja to reach their destination. Kensei crouched down and looked around the area. The captain waved his hands to signal his team into the area. They did as followed, each following a formation that had been performed over a hundred times in a single instant. Kensei sensed something wrong. That is when chaos erupted.
As they entered the fortress, the gates closed around them. Out of the shadows, 20 Stone ninja walked out. It would seem that the lord had given up his debt to the stone ninja by handing over sound nin. The four gathered around each other quickly, unsure of what to do. It was as if something had snapped in the pre-battle suspense. It was all such a blur after that. The battle erupted, Kensei and the team were able to stop a few of the shinobi before taking hits of their own. Toshi would go down first, falling victim to a genjutsu combo, followed by a blow to the leg, causing him to fall down. Hinata would try to get to him to heal it, only to be smacked back by one of the shinobi. Hitsugaya tried to handle five of the shinobi on his own, only to be badly injured by a kunai to the back. It was a massacre. Kensei held himself strong. If he was going to die, he do it saving the girl. Kensei looked into the eyes of his beloved and told her to run and get away. He knew when to retreat. Even if the knight, bishop and rook were down, there was no sense in letting the queen die. She wouldn't do it. She couldn't. Her love for the man was strong and even then, she would protect him instead. With all of her might and strength she transferred her chakra over to the man. She knew she would never leave out alive. Her body had suffered a slash from a sword that appeared to be fatal no matter what. That's the last thing Kensei could remember.
The events of the night still remain a mystery to the man. After her will had died out, they could only see the red glowing eyes of the Uchiha staring before them. The crimson blood of the eyes erupted, causing a wave of genjutsu to surround the men before them. Kensei's puppets danced like a wave of demons that the puppeteer had never used before. Kensei never knew that he had Uchiha blood in his body. His father, being the mystery that he was, never met with the boy and his mother rarely talked of his father before her death. Could it be that the boy had the abilities of the Uchiha clan and the passionate genjutsu that they used. Still, he lost everything that night. Many say that Kensei grew darker from then on. He blamed himself for those events. Had he only been stronger, he could have saved Hinata. Kensei then vowed to bring her back from the death. No matter what the cost, he would do it. Even if it meant sealing her within a puppet. His mind would fall into darkness from then on.
