Hanabi recently purchased a tiny, tiny bird and it was time to make friends with it. She took the tiny bird which she had named Navi outside with her and fed her some water and gave her a grape which was actually bigger than the bird itself. The practicality of having such a small bird was just… nonexistent in Hanabi's opinion, but she might as well have an animal companion right? With a sigh, Hanabi took the bird in her hands and started talking to her in a soft soothing voice. The bird seemed nice enough and wasn't a bitch which was helpful in this whole friendship process.
She was totally willing to beat the shit out of it if it looked like it deserved it though. Thankfully, the bird was sweet and fluttered around freely, always coming back to Hanabi's hair where it would nestle and flap its wings playfully. Hanabi wondered what it was like to be such a tiny creature and what the uses she would have for this thing were. She thought she might be able to steal some stuff with it, but it was way too small to lift even a kunai. No, Hanabi would probably just use it as a lookout or something.
Hanabi took the bird to a birdbath where she bathed the bird who wasn't all that willing to be clean. Hanabi wasn't one to negotiate with an animal usually, but she decided she would let the bird wash herself since that was a friendly thing to do. Hanabi was sad that she couldn’t' understand the chirping that the hummingbird kept doing and stuff but she figured she would learn to communicate with it eventually. Hopefully sooner than later because if she didn't learn it soon, she would go mad with the incessant chirping.
In her free time over the next few weeks, Hanabi would take Navi out and make sure she got plenty of fresh air. She also took her along to her training sessions. And every day she was sure to feed and bathe the bird as well as give it plenty of treats. There were no worries in getting the bird fat since it burned so many relative calories just fluttering around like a freak of nature. If Hanabi had to describe it, Hanabi would call Navi a fairy of sorts since it looked like a white ball moving around the sky.
A few weeks passed and the relationship between the two had gotten a bit shaky. Navi was becoming more of a pet to Hanabi and the Uchiha was getting into the monotonous routine of caring for another individual. She needed some way to convey to the bird that her purpose in life was not to be a pet, but a companion. There would be times that she would need to assist Hanabi in combat by shouting out warnings and such. Hanabi tried training the bird to make noises when stuff approached her from behind, but was unsuccessful.
Hanabi soon overcame the urge to just let the hummingbird free and effectively bonded with the poor creature in a way similar to how a beast master would bond with an animal. She only needed to now learn how to understand what the bird was saying. Navi was quite the talkative fellow and always seemed to make the same repetitive noises so Hanabi wasn't all that excited to taking their relationship to the next level. However it was necessary and she would do it in due time. Hanabi spent the next year taking the bird around the tea country, teaching everything she knew how to teach.
