Gracie was wandering around the Land of Waterfall when an interesting scent caught her attention. The wolf sniffed at the air a couple of times, trying to identify the smell. Gracie knew she had come across it before, but she couldn’t remember what it was. Kanae was busy and Gracie didn’t have anything better to do, so she decided to try tracking the scent. Gracie was used to tracking fresh scents of animals that were nearby, so this would be a little different.
The scent was pretty faint, so it was probably a couple of days old. Gracie walked around in circles, sniffing the air, trying to find where the scent was strongest. Her nose led her to a small patch of flattened grass where an animal had probably rested earlier. From this point, the scent was present in a couple of directions. Gracie chose one at random and began following it.
The path led her about 10 meters from the flattened grass before disappearing completely. Whatever Gracie was tracking must have taken this route and then doubled back. Undiscouraged, Gracie headed back to the flattened grass and chose a new direction. This happened a few of times, with most trails ending within 20 meters. Gracie got distracted by new scents a couple of times, but eventually went back to tracking the mystery scent.
One of the paths she was following led Gracie to a heavily wooded area. It was hard for Gracie to track the scent here because there were so many competing scents. It didn’t help that whatever she was tracking was traveling randomly. Sometimes the scent branched off and disappeared. Other times it went in a circle or zigzagged back and forth.
Luckily, the farther Gracie went, the stronger the scent got. It seemed like she was traveling faster than whatever was leaving the scent she was tracking. The scent left the trees and headed towards a stream. There was another patch of flattened grass nearby that had the scent she was tracking. Gracie decided to take a drink from the stream and take a break.
After a few minutes, Gracie was ready to continue her search. The mystery scent followed along the stream instead of crossing it, making it easier for Gracie to follow the trail. Maybe whatever she was following didn’t like to get wet. The scent led to a rock formation that was big enough to shelter a large dog from wind and rain. It looked like whatever she was tracking had spent the night here and Gracie decided to do the same.
Gracie knew from experience that tracking in the dark led to mistakes and injuries. Fortunately, it didn’t rain overnight and the mystery scent was still detectable. Gracie stood and stretched before going back to the stream to drink. Gracie had killed and eaten a small deer before coming across the mystery scent, so she wasn’t hungry. Gracie headed back to the rock formation and sniffed around until she picked up the scent again.
This time the mystery scent led Gracie through a large grassy field. Here Gracie found the remains of the breakfast of whatever she was tracking. From what was left, Gracie determined that it used to be a small mouse or rodent. It looked like whatever she was tracking was smaller than her. Gracie was glad; she had gotten into trouble in the past by tracking a larger, stronger animal.
As she continued walking, the scent grew stronger and stronger. Whatever Gracie was tracking had been there a couple of hours before. Gracie was tempted to rush to catch up with the scent, but decided against it. The trail was so convoluted that she’d probably lose the scent and end up needing to backtrack. Soon the scent led Gracie to a small hill with a cottage at the top.
Torakkingu Nioi (Tracking Scent)
Rank: D, C, B, A, S
Skill: Skill
Effect: An animal companion hones their sense of smell to such levels that they may track an opponent.
Special: N/A
Drawback: Certain animals cannot progress to the higher levels of this technique do to their lack of acute scent abilities. Animals with unremarkable scent abilities, such as the bird, can only learn up to the B ranked version of this technique.
Description: The user of this technique gathers their natural scent abilities, using them to track an opponent. The animal catches the scent of the tracked object or person, and from there follows the scent trail. With the D ranked version, the user can only track a scent ten days old. Each rank higher that is trained increases the time frame by ten days. This means that a user with the C ranked version can track a scent twenty days old, while the S ranked version can track a scent fifty days old. This technique may be used to track humans, objects, or even herbs. However, when tracking an herb or poison, the user can only track an herb or poison of the same rank of as their current level of this technique. The user can only track an herb they have encountered in the past. The user must have encountered either a poison itself or the components making it up in the past in order to track it. This technique increases the user’s chance of finding an herb by five percent. This amount increases by a further five percent at each rank, so an S rank user has their chance of finding an herb increased by twenty five percent. The user can track an opponent over various terrains, including grassland, hard earth, and undisturbed snow and sand, and still water. When tracking another human being, the user has a thirty percent chance of catching a scent while in the same region, or a ten percent chance while in an adjacent region. A user must have at least one post between each post asking for a scent roll. This percentage increases by ten at each rank, so the S ranked version of the technique allows the user a seventy and fifty percent chance, respectively. Once a scent is successfully caught, and the user is in the same region as the tracked victim, the user has a twenty percent chance of finding them. This percentage increases by ten for each rank of this technique learned, so the S ranked version offers a sixty percent chance.
Limit: Must be an animal with a high sense of smell.
