As much as Kiyoshi really didn’t want to be here, it was necessary. The torture enthusiast realized something- if he could patch up his victims, then he would be able to play with them for longer. It was a revelation that sent an excited shiver through him, the blonde determined to go through with this. To help him out he had a friend who worked at the hospital, Sachi. The young woman was quite beautiful, she had long flowing red hair and vibrant green eyes and quite the feminine figure. If he actually swung her way, he was pretty sure he’d be enthralled.

“Alright, let’s start with the basics, which is to diagnose before you even begin treatment…” The woman went onto explain how to determine how severe a wound was by looking at it, the differences between gashes and mere cuts. Then she went on about how to clean the wounds properly, to disinfect them before even trying to bandage them up since the care wouldn’t amount to a whole lot if they died from infection. Alcohol seemed to be a best friend in medical care, the woman drawing diagrams and showing him some of her own materials as she showed him how to use cotton balls and wipes to carefully sanitize a wound.

Finally they were on how to properly bandage. Sachi died one around his own forearm as she explained it, showing him how much to overlap and letting him feel how snug it should be. It had to be tight enough to put on pressure and remain still, but not so much that it cut off circulation… The redhead was very technical about it, and he was sure that if he wasn’t so eager to learn all of this, he’d be bored out of his mind. Kiyoshi was probably learning how to heal for the wrong reasons, but damn it he was going to do this.

Paying keen attention when he was showed where to feel for a pulse, Kiyoshi made mental notes of both the spots on the neck and wrist that were best for determining whether or not someone’s heart was still beating. He couldn’t help but imagining doing this as he felt someone’s pulse slip away completely, to feel the little pounds gradually slow to a stop. The thought gave him a sick thrill, but he was able to so easily able to hide it from Sachi and instead he just smiled pleasantly and nodded along as she went on with her explanations.

The blonde had to feel around on the areas he had noted before he found a spot that held a strong enough beat for him to feel, not even noticing that his eyes fell shut in concentration. Once he did find it though, they reopened and he got a visual of where to feel as well. After she went on about what different counts of heart beats meant, he counted hers only to confirm that the woman’s heart was perfectly healthy at the moment. Sachi even went on about how hearts tended to beat faster during lies because of anxiety, which he found particularly interesting since he figured he could use that tidbit of information when he was interrogating someone to see if they were lying… Then again, it may not be very reliable, considering he’d probably have them under all other sorts of distress as well.

Sachi already had plans on using some connections to get Kiyoshi into a small clinic within the village to shadow what real medical professionals did, for now just continuing to teach him the basics and theory. Since trauma was one of the most common reasons for people to need help, she went on explaining how to determine how and where someone unconscious was injured when they couldn’t tell him directly. While bleeding was an obvious sign, she explained how it could also be misleading and how to quickly and accurately discern the origin of the wound.

There were times when it was dangerous to treat someone unconscious as well, as they could have a fractured spinal column and rough movements would snap it completely. Head trauma could be tricky as well, and since she wasn’t trying to explain to him how to treat everything, she instead showed how to just stabilize a person long enough to get medical attention. Apparently if he absolutely had to move someone without use of a stretcher, it was a good idea to secure their head and back to some sort of board or similar stiff and sturdy object. It’d be best if he tied their forehead to it as well as their chest, to keep them from moving their neck in case the area was damaged so it wouldn’t get worse with movement.

A couple days later Kiyoshi was given permission to help out at a small clinic, one that generally just dealt with civilians in the area. At first he mostly just hung back and observed, making mental notes as he remained out of the way and just retrieved different items when they were requested and listened astutely when they explained what they were needed for. They told him the signs of a fever without using a thermometer, even though one was of course always best used if available to confirm the diagnosis. But they knew he wouldn’t always have the luxury out in the field, especially since they tended to be so frail.

Flushed skin, being sweaty, hot to the touch, shivering- they were all symptoms of a fever. Coughing was common as well, but not necessary. If the fever was dangerously high, sometimes it would be necessary to put the patient into an ice bath to stabilize their temperature- but it’d only be a temporary fix until the underlying problem was found and fixed. However, it could be helpful in order to just get someone to a proper hospital if he was too far away for them to make it on their own. Kiyoshi tried to absorb all the information like a sponge, even making a list of what the clinic usually used to combat fevers to study over later.

When a teenager came in with a few scrapes and bruises, the attending physician actually let Kiyoshi handle it under his supervision. Since it was his first time actually handling a patient he was careful, checking the broken skin carefully and removing some bits and pieces of gravel with a pair of tweezers before washing the wound gently with soap and water. Then it was some antibiotics to make sure the wound wouldn’t get infected, giving the same warning that the doctors and nurses usually did that it would sting. When the younger one hissed in pain, on the inside he was grinning while he so easily kept a straight face for their sakes.

Finally was the bandage of course after putting a sterile gauze over the area, Kiyoshi carefully wrapping the wound up despite the temptation to just press his thumb into the wound and cause more pain. It was so strange for him, the sadist actually healing someone instead of hurting them for once. The blonde made sure to tie the white wraps firm enough, but not so tight that it’d cut off blood flow at all. The threshold was easy to find, after Sachi’s tips back when he first started to learn all of this. Once he was done he used a couple of metal pins to secure it down, to make sure it wouldn’t slip off. The very last step was the same as the first had been actually, which was to wash his hands.

Kiyoshi had begun to hit a bit of a roadblock in his medical studies, so he figured it was time with another tutoring session with his good friend Sachi. The woman was happy to teach him the basics of anatomy, the redhead knowing that it was necessary for someone in her field. Plus she just loved drawing her little diagrams, which were certainly useful. Sachi decided to go from the inside out, starting with the skeletal system. She even made him draw out his own version of the diagram to help imprint it within his mind, despite his not looking nearly as professional or as accurate as hers.

The blonde didn’t actually know a lot of the scientific names of the bones he found out, mostly surprised that the spinal column and hip bones were broken up into different sections while he had always assumed that they were sort of the same thing. It would take him some time to get used to the names and he knew it, but he figured it’d certainly help out when working in the clinic. Especially since some of these things he had heard around there before, so now he wouldn’t have to feel like an idiot asking them what they were talking about. Not that they expected much out of him, as he had merely been working there for free as a volunteer while he learned the ropes.

After the skeleton, next they moved onto the organs. Starting from the top down, she had him follow along with his own sketch again. The brain was first, which she didn’t go into a whole lot of detail about but informed him that there were different regions that did different things. It was intriguing, the illusion master making a mental note to research the brain more since he figured it could help him with being able to alter what it registered. Then she had him draw out the esophagus and trachea leading from the mouth down towards the stomach.

Before actually addressing the stomach, she had him go back up and draw a lung on each side of the esophagus, then an outline of a heart that laid behind the left lung. Beneath the lungs was the diaphragm, then liver, then stomach attached to the end of the esophagus. Beneath that was the large intestine, which semi-encircled the small intestine. The kidneys were roughly on each side of the large intestine, symmetrical to each other. At the bottom of the small intestine was the bladder, which was where she stopped for the major organs.

After he had his initial sketch drawn, she had him copy it over a couple times. Sachi made small corrections on the placement and scales as she watched him as well, eventually taking a break where they both went out for lunch to let the information sink in a bit. When they got back she had him draw it again out of memory alone, without looking at anything else for reference. Still he made small mistakes and she corrected him, eventually telling him to label the bones as well. Then when she was satisfied, she told him to replace the exorcise once a day until he no longer made mistakes and had to correct himself.

After learning a bit about anatomy, Kiyoshi felt far more confident when he returned to work at the small clinic. No longer was he quite as much in the dark as he had been before. It was a good thing too, as one of the nurses had an emergency and couldn’t make it, which meant he had to cover for them. Still he worked closely under the attending physician’s watch, but they trusted him enough to handle this for a few hours. For once he was going to get paid, too. It wasn’t much different than what he usually did, retrieving various materials needed by the doctor and performing easier tasks such as cleaning and dressing wounds. He learned where some more of the medicines were as well, things that they had previously kept him away from since they hadn’t exactly trusted him.

While things were going a bit slow, the doctor taught him how to draw blood properly as well. Finding a vein wasn’t too difficult on the hydrated physician, but he warned that the difficulty varied from person to person. When they did have patients come in who needed blood drawn, he was allowed to practice on finding the veins on their arms. Of course he didn’t draw the blood himself, but he showed the physician where he found the vein and was told whether or not he was correct. It was sort of difficult to do with gloves on and he found them a bit annoying, but he knew of their importance and just dealt with it. Avoiding contamination was worth the difficulty and as they taught him, it was better to be safe than sorry. Last thing he wanted was to catch some disease from a patient.

Doctor Tamashi was new and quite attractive, the only other young male to be working around the clinic besides himself since he first started there. Luckily he was assigned as the new guy’s aide as well, since he knew his way around the clinic and could still learn quite a few things from a professional. Kiyoshi was able to show the brunette where everything was, for the most part. When they started tending to patients he had to remind Tamashi of the locations of various supplies every once in a while, but the doctor caught on pretty quickly. For the most part he was just observing what the guy did and helping out when asked, but Tamashi handled most of the things and didn’t seem accustomed to working with someone else.

When they got a bit swamped, Kiyoshi convinced Tamashi to let him handle someone who merely seemed to have a sprained arm. It didn’t take a whole lot of convincing- hell, he was amused by how easily the young doctor ultimately gave in when he applied a little pressure. The blonde assistant made sure the patient’s arm remain rested as he retrieved a cold pack, instructing that it be held over the injury to reduce swelling. He prepared a sling while he waited, just a cheap little thing since the sprain wasn’t too bad and didn’t need all the equipment in the world to care for. Carefully he cradled the arm in the sling as he temporarily removed the cold pack, reapplying it soon as he had the sling done up firmly to keep the man’s arm firmly secured in front of him. It really wasn’t bad, the only reason they came to the clinic being that a paranoid coworker had worried about a fracture.
