Ryuu was with his adoptive mother, heading to a small village outside of Kirigakure. The village had no medicine man or woman, or any local apothecary of any kind. So, Raina Shizahara-Kaguya led her son the student to the village to begin some formal training.
“Mother, I don’t think this is a good idea,” Ryuu said, “I’m not sure I’m going to be any help.”
“You’ll do fine,” Raina said, “We’re just going over some basics here. I’ll just need your help with some things.”
When they arrived at the village, Ryuu could sense that something was wrong. People were lying on the ground, injured and some of the houses had been destroyed.
“What happened?” Raina asked the first villager that came up to her.
“We don’t know,” the villager said, panicked, “Something came through the village, there’s so much…”
“It’s alright,” Raina said, switching into medic mode, “Ryuu, get us set up in one of these houses, then start bringing in wounded. Triage scenario, understand?”
“Right,” Ryuu said and set to work. Once the makeshift hospital was set up, his mother took her place by a makeshift operating table. Ryuu was effectively her nurse in this situation. But it was an opportunity to get some basic medical training done.

“Alright,” Raina said, “Bring in the first patient.” Their first patient was a bloody mess, bleeding from a stump where his arm should be and multiple cuts all over his body. The cuts had been badly bandaged, so he wasn’t dead just yet.
“Shit, he’s going to exsanguinate if I don’t get these wounds sealed,” Raina said, “Ryuu, get a fire and a kunai and help me cauterize these wounds.” Raina’s hands began to glow and produce a massive amount of heat. Ryuu, very quickly by anyone’s standards, had a fire going and a kunai inside it, heating it up.
Ryuu was familiar with the process of cauterization: using a heated piece of metal, you could close a wound that was bleeding, saving someone’s life. On the other hand, it was immensely painful, and caused just as much damage to the skin as the blood loss could cause. Ryuu had read about it, but had never performed it before. He knew his mother had a technique for chakra cauterization, but Ryuu didn’t have enough knowledge or power as his mother. So, Ryuu was stuck with the smaller wounds, heating this kunai to apply to them.
“Ryuu, hurry up with that kunai,” Raina said insistently. Ryuu held the kunai a little longer in the flame, then hurried over and picked a wound at random, gently pressing the knife on one of the wounds. The man screamed as Raina applied her technique at the same time, and Ryuu winced as he held the blade to the man’s arm. After a few seconds, Ryuu pulled the blade away and saw the burn he left. Ryuu had pressed too hard and damaged the man’s skin more than necessary.
“Use another kunai and have that one sterilised,” Raina ordered, continuing to work on the serious wounds. Ryuu rushed back, giving the blade to one of the villagers that had been drafted as a helper. Pulling out another kunai, Ryuu again held it in the flame, careful not to burn his fingers. Ryuu had to be careful: while his mother could heal the damage, it was still too painful for the man to endure too much. His body would end up shutting down if put under too much stress.
Once the kunai began to glow red, Ryuu went back and lightly pressed against the next would, doing his best to close his ears to the screams. His mother had moved on to healing what wounds she could, leaving sealing them off to Ryuu. After a few seconds, Ryuu pulled back and saw that this time, he at least avoided unnecessary damage to the flesh this time. Moving back to heat another kunai, Ryuu continued the process over and over again.
Eventually, Ryuu had finished closing all the wounds, which was good because he was out of kunai, and sterilising them was taking too much time. Ryuu breathed heavily, exhausted from running back and forth.
“The next patient, Ryuu!”
“Right!”
