Bree stood by the windows, looking out at the boiling world her country was turning into. She was inside a grand, raised ballroom, where various politicians had gathered to be protected from the dead that rose from the fertile earth. It was a mysterious invasion, if nothing else. Had all the dead of the world been offended by something?
The young girl sighed, standing alone at the edge of the ballroom. Despite protests, she pried one of the reinforced glass windows open to gaze out at the destruction outside. Highly paid bodyguards were currently engaged in combat against some of the ghouls, so she wasn't responsible for the fighting. Her task—as she asked for—was to heal the wounded, which were to be brought up to her spot in the ballroom once extracted from the fighting outside.

While free and open, Bree didn't have much to dwell on except the state of her own body and might. Her smaller stature had been a bother nowadays, with her position in the world, so it was time to dig deep into her locked energies and put them to use. The source of the first hidden power was at her butt. People said it was at the base of the spine, which Bree figured was their adult way of getting out of saying rear. It was a well of spiritual energy that didn't normally flow with the rest of the chakra in her system, at least not all at once.
Bree was not really very battle hardened. She knew fear, and the cataclysm going on beyond the windows was as good a fright as any other. Those ghastly ghouls outside put the weight of fear in her mind, and that very same weight seemed to be pressed on top of her first well of energy. Fear was blocking it, so she couldn't open the gate and reap its benefits for herself. The knowledge and assurance of survival was needed to relieve the ache.
Bree looked around: she saw the chart they were compiling with help from people with long-range scouting techniques, she saw the bar where the most frightened adults dwelled in drinks to forget the deathly storm outside, she saw the extra guards the leaders and politicians dragged at their side out of paranoia, and she saw the thick ward-laden metal walls in this ballroom that were to repel any threat. This was survival in material form, a shell to protect her.
So she survived, from then till now. This was a safe space. Like a key, she reached down into herself and locked the first gate. Power pumped through her veins. She had survived, and she would continue to survive. She controlled fear. So, when a gaunt and leathery creature flew toward her open window, she had very little reservation as she shut the window in the creatures face and knocked it out of the air.
"God," she muttered, annoyed. "What did anyone do for all of us to deserve this misfortune?"
