Character Depth
Personality: ENFP
Passionate
Even from a young age, Takumi’s passion for his clan and for hip-hop drove him into action. He knows his values well, and wavering from them would cause him to spiral into an emotional crisis. Takumi has built has identity on his personal values. The boy wears his heart on his sleeve, and does not hesitate to announce his goals, plans, and dreams to people he meets. From his clothing choices to how he spends his free time, his actions reflect the deep love he has for the Hyoushi lifestyle. His passion also causes him to ignore or forget various social customs, so he often ends up speaking out of turn or asking questions at inappropriate times. However, outbursts like these make Takumi seem like an open, honest individual. His enthusiasm has an infectious quality about it which makes many people, even some enemies, root for him.
Novelty-Seeking
Takumi’s current goal in life is to soak in all that life has to offer from joy and love to tragedy and loss. He is seeking out the great stories of the world because he believes that such stories will make his hip-hop that much better. However, Takumi is not one to seek out these stories by asking others. Instead, he wants to experience these things himself. This desire drove him to travel the world, going wherever the winds took him, and it is currently the force behind his desire to become a shinobi. Takumi’s wanderlust can often be a downfall on missions which require focus, as he can become distracted by his surroundings and drawn, for instance, to stroll into a bowling alley rather than to infiltrate a secret meeting.
Optimistic
One of his defining character traits, Takumi’s optimism is the main reason he has survived so far in life. He has a great confidence in his path to greatness not because of destiny or providence, but because of his work ethic. Occasionally his optimism can come across as cockiness, but anyone who spends time around Takumi will come to learn that he applies an optimistic view towards nearly everything and everyone around him. As a friend and teammate, Takumi always expects the best from those around him and usually believes in them more than they believe in themselves. With his enemies, Takumi often views others as misguided rather than evil, and he likes to believe that, given time, they would come around to see the world as he does. Even when he is backed into a corner, Takumi has a great confidence that a way out exists, and he often argues that no fight is decided until it is over.
Mischievous
As one who seeks novelty in his environment, Takumi resorted to pranks as a child to create a little chaos simply for chaos’s sake. From pickpocketing a friend’s wallet to using genjutsu to pretend to be someone completely different, Takumi loves seeing how far he can take a lie or deceive others. He usually intends these acts to be harmless and views them as jokes more than anything, but his natural aptitude for mischief has made him adept in the use of genjutsu and has provided him with a set of quick and steady hands for thievery.
Rash
As a passionate person, Takumi struggles to contain himself when something gets him worked up. He has been known to trust strangers on a hunch in his travels, charge into battles without consideration, and speak to those in authority with poorly-chosen words. This personality trait is often the cause of unnecessary troubles in Takumi’s life, but his talent for escaping conflict and improvising battle plans has kept him away from too much trouble up until this point in his life. However, if he fails to mature into a more capable strategist, Takumi will find himself with far more bruises as he grows older.
Distractible
Takumi’s attention span would probably be what most of his family, friends, and teammates would consider his most annoying quality. Missions in cities can take far longer to complete with Takumi because of various shops, interesting families, and new music scenes to explore. As mentioned, he has a habit of wandering off when the mission does not demand it (much to the chagrin of the mission leader). As he has grown older, Takumi has gotten better at setting distractions aside during missions and important parts of his life, but he still struggles with it and will need to grow in that area if he ever wants to be promoted past gennin levels in the village. However, his distractedness can occasionally allow him to notice things which other ninja would not, and his seemingly spontaneous ideas can provide unorthodox solutions to problems.
Appearance:
Takumi is a tall and lanky kid with long, blonde hair. Adopted from his father’s style, he wears a bandana (now his ninja headband) low on his brow and a pair of handcuffs as a necklace. Early in his life, these style choices were done in imitation of his father, but now Takumi wears them as a reminder of his family and the pursuit of his goal. Clothes-wise, he most typically wears an open jacket or unbuttoned shirt with a plain colored undershirt. On a typical day, most people would not be surprised to find him loafing about the village or training in sweatpants. In addition, most of the boy’s clothes have various stains and discolorations due to his excessive use of spray paints in both his daily life as well as for different ninjutsu techniques. His pockets and bags often clank with the sound of aerosol cans, and his portable radio has its own special pocket in his sweatpants with his earbuds.
An encounter with Takumi on any given day would reveal several things about him. Firstly, his posture rarely changes despite who he speaks with. His body language speaks volumes about his energy and passion, and listeners should be careful not to stand too close to him because of his wild gesticulations when he tells a story. In addition, finding him without a smile on his face would be a rare occasion. Takumi radiates an energy and positivity which is both infectious and, at the same time, provides a great deal of concern to those around him.
Background:
Birth and Early Childhood (0-8)
Born into the Hyoushi Village to two loving parents, Takumi’s childhood involved few, if any challenges. Among Hyoushi clan members his age, he was considered lucky for the stability present in his family. His father worked late nights for one of the village’s radio stations under the title of DJ Clover, and his mother, a retired Sound Shinobi, spent her days working on a variety of graffiti-styled artworks. Both of Takumi’s parents had a great influence on him, and he aspired to be just like his mother and father when he grew up. This desire manifested itself in a variety of ways. He took to wearing a bandana low on his brow and interlinked handcuffs around his neck just like his father, carried a can of spray paint with him at all times despite lacking any artistic ability with it, and even picked up on his mother’s verbal tic of either beginning of ending every sentence with “yo.”
Takumi also inherited the deep love for hip-hop which characterizes his clan from both of his parents. As a child, he was inseparable from his portable radio and headphones, and he often fell asleep listening to his favorite DJs (which, of course, included his father). Heavily influence by the likes of DJ Skribble, DJ Slynkee, DJ Rex, and his father, Takumi began to develop aspirations of becoming history’s greatest DJ, and he often pretended to broadcast and DJ his very own show to his mother while he was growing up at home. His mother encouraged his aspirations, but always informed him how much work he would need to become a great DJ. She also taught him how hip-hop involved far more than the music on his radio, but that arts like graffiti, breakdancing, and beatboxing all expressed the sentiments of the music. That encouragement and advice always stuck with Takumi as he grew up, and it became the fire which fueled his optimism, confidence, and desire to grow.
Generally, others viewed Takumi as an energetic and bubbly child, but he also possessed a mischievous streak. Friends and relatives frequently found their pockets emptied by the stealthy toddler, and no encounter with Takumi as a child ended without some form of prank, practical joke, or compulsive lie. Most of these occurrences were harmless, and Takumi rarely stole or lied with ill-intent. Stolen wallets were returned with a cheeky smile, and his pranks often ended with both parties laughing the situation off. However, the occasional irritable person would be enraged by Takumi’s antics, and the boy developed a considerable amount of skill in escaping from a conflict either with his speed, agility, or stealth.
Training (8-12)
While Takumi’s shenanigans were endearing at his young age, his mother and father both began to be concerned by their son’s deceptive nature. They both agreed that if Takumi continued down his current path, he would inevitably get wrapped up in one of the village’s gangs and, most likely, a life of petty crime. Both of Takumi’s parents had experienced the suffering of that lifestyle firsthand, and they had a strong desire to make sure their son did not fall into a bad crowd. Agreeing that their son’s skill and energy could be channeled into more productive areas, Takumi’s mother decided to instruct her son in the shinobi arts as well as the Hyoushi clans graffiti-based warding jutsu. Takumi, eight years old at that time, jumped at the opportunity to develop his graffiti skills, but he felt quite indifferent toward any use of chakra since that seemed to just distract him from his goal of becoming the world’s greatest hip-hop DJ.
Despite his initial unwillingness, Takumi’s mother managed to add some incentives to her son’s homeschooling which drove him to apply his strong work ethic to the shinobi arts. By showing her son how genjutsu and ninjutsu could be used for pranks and other mischievous means, Takumi became fascinated by them and spent long hours of his days practicing their application. His mother discovered Takumi’s natural aptitude for genjutsu, and she taught him nearly all she could about its various applications. Only a year after training in the area, Takumi showed an impressive level of skill within the area (much to the chagrin of Hyoushi village residents who could hardly keep up with the boy’s antics before he gained training in genjutsu.
In addition, Takumi’s skill with the art of graffiti greatly increased over his years of training with his mother. Her graffiti-based ninjutsu was one of Takumi’s favorite things to learn, and he developed a strong affinity for the artform. Although the walls around Takumi’s neighborhood all sported his stylized signature, artwork, and Chakra Marks, Takumi’s mother was incredibly proud of her son’s development and began to wander how much more she could teach her son in the shinobi arts.
While Takumi proved himself to be a quick and perceptive learner of all things shinobi, by his twelfth birthday he had turned his eyes completely back toward his goal of becoming a master of hip-hop and history’s greatest DJ. During the few months after his birthday, Takumi spent more time writing rhymes and creating mixtapes than practicing chakra control and jutsus. At the same time, many of Takumi’s closest friends and rivals in the village were entering various positions as DJs, breakdancers, and beatboxers. A feeling of insecurity and envy of his friends began to form as Takumi saw them flourish and gain fame within the clan. More and more, his training in the shinobi arts felt like a waste of time.
Leaving Home and Travels (12-14)
After having been sheltered within the Hyoushi village his entire life and well-protected by his parents, Takumi realized that his goals could not be achieved through his current lifestyle. The songs he listened to on the radio each night described stories: some of great heartbreak, others of dangerous adventures, and still more about love, camaraderie, and teamwork. Sitting down with his father one day, Takumi asked him what had allowed his success as a DJ. His father responded that his success came from the recognition that all of hip-hop is an attempt to tell stories, and the greater, more relatable stories came from personal experiences.
Takumi’s father’s response affected Takumi significantly, and the boy spent several sleepless nights pondering it before arriving at the conclusion that his life needed a great story and an even greater adventure. He had never faced dangers, difficulties, or much adversity. Without an intriguing story of his own, Takumi realized that he could never become a true DJ, and he began to feel threatened by the thought of not fulfilling his lifelong goal.
Fueled by his ambition, his envy of kids his age who were already successful, and several conversations with his parents and the clan’s leaders, Takumi came to believe that he must leave the Hyoushi village and explore the world. After almost a month of deliberations, the clan and his family allowed him to depart from the village due to their belief that Takumi’s shinobi training and personality armed him with the skills he needed to be successful. Before he left, Takumi vowed to his parents that he would return to the Hyoushi village as the world’s greatest DJ and that he would make the Hyoushi name respected throughout the world. With only the clothes on his back and an old sack filled with his most prized possessions, Takumi left the village determined to find his own story to tell.
On the road, Takumi’s personality truly came to life. His optimism, energy, and openness allowed him to make friends with nearly everyone he met, and his mischievousness and resourcefulness kept him well-fed and helped him find a bed wherever he went. As a vagabond for two years, Takumi met a large number of people across nearly every nation, and he began to develop his worldview and find interesting stories to tell.
Arrival in Kumogakure (14-15)
Around his fourteenth birthday, Takumi had an unfortunate misunderstanding with a group of Stone Shinobi after a genjutsu he had been working on did not affect them. While trying to hold off three Stone Shinobi and escape at the same time, three Cloud Ninja arrived and interfered in the fight, allowing Takumi to escape. He later sought out the Cloud Ninja and learned they were on their way back to Kumogakure. Managing to weasel his way into their party, Takumi quickly learned that the three ninja all had amazing stories to tell due to their adventures, struggles, and friendships. In an act of spontaneity, Takumi decided he would accompany the ninja back to Kumogakure and find a way to become a true shinobi like them.
Needless to say, Takumi’s arrival with the group at the gates of Kumogakure was treated with a great deal of skepticism. Questions overflowed from the gate guards, then from some ANBU officers on patrol, and then from many ANBU interrogation specialists. Finally, the village’s officials allowed Takumi to join the village, but he was kept under a watchful eye and was distrusted by the majority of the villagers. The following months became the most lonesome of Takumi’s life, and he finally knew what it felt like to be rejected and alone.
However, Takumi’s openness and optimism continued throughout this period. His fun-loving nature eventually gained the trust of those around him, and Takumi developed a strong friend group within the village. When the beginning of the next school year rolled around in Kumogakure, Takumi signed up to join the academy with permission from the village. Having already been trained in multiple shinobi arts, he progressed quickly through the academy’s coursework. However, he also learned several key techniques during this time period which he had not known beforehand either because he refused to learn them at home or his mother had forgotten about them. Takumi’s previous training paired with his quick wit ensured that he caught up to several classes ahead of him and managed to graduate from the academy in only a year’s time. No longer just a boy, Takumi now possessed the title of gennin and optimistically looked forward to the adventures he would have with his teammates.
