The light from the lamppost flickered.
Black nothingness engulfed the crowd of people for just a second. Not a soul flinched. These ones did not fear the dark. Its significance was nothing in comparison to the experience they had all been promised on this late night. The crowd were lined up on the pavement outside a large two-storey modern building with the words "Laquire Opera House" written on a plastic sign on the building's face.
The entrance was a simple pair of wooden doors painted blood red. A red rope barrier stood in front of the doors, with two tall security guards on either side, faces stony and eyes focused. It was hard to tell whether their unreadable expressions were due to nonchalance or professionalism.
The crowd that flocked by the entrance of the venue was quite diverse. Men and women dressed in elegant suits and dresses of varying qualities and colours. Some came in groups, others came in couples and a few came alone. Not a single person lining up around the opera house looked younger than 20. There was a certain tension in the air that could be felt by the offbeat chattering and furtive whispers that echoed through the chilly night sky. One talented at reading the atmosphere could feel that the crowd here seemed a strange mixture of inquisitive, excited and sceptical. Among the frantic chatter, a few sentences escaped the discord.
"Do you think he's really going to perform?"
"When can we enter?"
"This better not be a hoax"
The existence of tonight's performance had been spread purely by word of mouth. Everyone there had been invited by someone they knew in some way or form. Word of mouth naturally jumbled the accuracy of the event's details. However there were two common factors in every invitation;
Admission was free and it was going to be a performance to die for.
