Ritual of the Talon and Feather
Rank: C
Effects: Forms bone deposits below the shoulder blade for wing growth.
Special: A baby bird of any kind, a Tsubasa Ritual Scroll, two Tsubasa members of 19 years or older, and a Tsubasa medic.
Description: By use of their own blood, the two Tsubasa members will draw a circle upon the ground and place an unrolled Tsubasa scroll within the center. In the center of the circle, seated upon the scroll, sits the recipient of the ritual with his back to the baby bird which aids his receiving of the wings. At each end of the scroll stands one of the two Tsubasa members with the medic waiting outside the circle. The two Tsubasa then begin to make a long string of handseals, each seal lighting up a symbol upon the scroll in green. Once all symbols light up the chakra spreads to the circle itself, and when the blood becomes green it begins to wrap around the recipient and baby bird. Once this occurs the medic steps in and plucks a feather from the baby bird, placing it between the recipient's shoulder blades. The green blood with then merge with the feather, and the feather with the recipient's back which adds a new chemical to their system to incite feather growth when stimulated. Once inside the body the chakra laced blood begins to flow about, causing immense pain, which the medic alleviates with the Healing Hands jutsu as the bones are hollowed out. The excess of calcium taken from the bones builds up just below the shoulder blades to be used to form wings with the proper jutsu later on.

Tsubasa Sodachimasu no jutsu (Wing Grow Technique)
Rank: C-Rank
Skill: Ninjutsu
Effect: Lets the user grow wings of a bird out of their shoulders.
Special: Ram
Drawback: The user may feel some pain, due to the initial outburst of the extra shoulder bones that are used for the rest of the wings to grow on. Cannot Re-grow wings that were ripped or severed from the body. If one wing is removed then it is impossible to retract the wings. If a wing is injured somehow, once retracted they cannot be used for 2 weeks OOC.
Description: The user forms the handseal, and then the extra shoulder bones that come from the Ritual of Talon and Feather burst through the back of the user and they start to grow into wings of any given bird, through chakra increasing the length of the bones, (user chooses) that are twice the length of the userfs arms. Chakra will numb the pain, but it will still hurt. The chakra will also accelerate the growth of the skin, but it will come out with feathers, having stimulated the chemical. The user may then use the wings to fly and perform other techniques that require this jutsu. When the Tsubasa wishes it or has an injured wing they can retract the wings into their body to heal over time or simply to hide them.

Interactive Personalities
Innocence
Hantei is a child that was exposed to tragedy at a young age, halting his process of maturity. As such, Hantei often gives off the vibe that he should take everyone's blame upon himself, and blames himself completely for things that are clearly only partly his fault. Hantei also will pretend like he is more mature than he is, given that he is older than he is on the inside, and will occasionally try and make an insightful comment or be the leading command in a conversation, but most of the time, he doesn't know what he's talking about. Innocence has guided him to make friends easily and to have more people willing to fight on his behalf, though he will claim not to need or want their help. Death is also a major thing to him, despite his experiences with it, is always a huge impact on his life, and he will often times stay locked up in a room for weeks grieving over a loss, refusing to accept company. Lastly, Hantei believes that everything that he believes is the absolute truth, and if a situation were to change light on his beliefs, he would have an extremely hard time adapting to the change.
Because of his personal issues with responsibilities, Hantei will often go alone to solve issues that are concerning his friends and mentors, or his own issues, without leaving a trace.
Justice/Lawfulness/Theology
Hantei has a strong sense of justice, and will always take actions to carry this out. If a friend ever betrays him or the law, Hantei will do his best to bring them in to the courts for trial. He believes strongly that God is the law, and that following him means following, in turn, God. Hantei, while preferring pacifism in fighting, will have no hesitation killing or submitting an 'evildoer'.
Having grown up in a church (to the Kaishaba religion), Hantei is devoted to God as a entity. He has only ever doubted in his existence before the church took him in, but afterwards, never had any doubts as to his existence. His devotion to God is unending, and almost everything in his life he will do for God or his friends.
Hantei believes that Araqiel is a part of God, the part that is willing to take part in human affairs to help save humanity, however, he also believes that there is another part to god, perhaps a brother or just another part of Araqiel, who doesn't get involved in conflicts or justice. He holds the world together, keeps the sun up every day, and guides everyone throughout their lives to be who they are on the inside. God, he believes, is ready to accept anyone who has fallen back into the light, and that is the key component of Hantei's belief of justice. That everyone can be saved. For this reason, he will blatantly reject death sentences, however, won't get involved if the courts think it is the only solution. Every time a criminal dies, by the court's hand or by Hantei's himself, Hantei will pray for the being to make a safe return to the afterlife.
Hantei believes Ninjutsu to be a part of Araqiel's test to humanity, and a sign that God's existence is absolute and not to be questioned.
Hantei believes there is only heaven, that everyone who is evil is evil by a direct cause of the environment they grew up in, and that people will never be eternally punished for their childhood life turning them into evil adults.
Patience
Hantei has unpedictable amounts of patience, mostly due to his immaturity. If he is alone and waiting for something to happen, he will have almost no patience at all, tapping his feet, running in circles, and doing mindless tasks to set his mind at ease until his patience has ended. However, when people are around, Hantei is trying to prove his maturity to others, and will be more patient than he is on the inside. Hantei will never comment on his impatience, and will never act out around others with impatience.
When learning a technique, Hantei has more patience than would otherwise be imaginable. He takes the technique's base from multiple perspectives, trying to analyze what he can do to break down the technique into different components, building them up until he can perform the actual technique himself. He also has this patience for his religious studies, and anything he considers to be a aspect sent by god to help teach him to ways of life.
Moral Devotion (Charity, Humility)
Hantei has lived a life like the members of the church he grew up in. He keeps minimal possessions on his person at all times, carrying only a weapon, a map, and the gift the church gave him (the sealing ink). He donates everything else he would receive to charity, and especially likes finding someone on the street to give the money or item to in person, enjoying their reaction for the deed done to help their life.
Often times, greatful people offer him gifts for his charity and hospitable nature, however, Hantei will refuse them, encouraging them to pass it on to someone else who needs it. If Hantei is found in a impoverished situation, he will not accept charity anyway, claiming that others will need it more.
Clan-Based Personality Aspects
Hantei hates eating worms, despite them not tasting awful to his clan members. He views it as degrading and especially not do it if anyone is watching. He will be mindful of his surroundings if he ever does, like he is digging up a body from an accidental murder. He fears that if anyone sees, then he will be a laughing stock to everyone.
Hantei completed the Ritual of Talon and Feather at a young age, and gained their aspects before the tragedy struck. Hantei thinks of his white wings as angelic, a sign from God that he was meant to do something great in life. He never boasts or shows them off however (as part of Humility), knowing full well that it isn't in his place to put others down because of his physical appearance. Hantei prefers to keep his wings in, mostly on account of this.
Hantei has no bird companion, however, has thought about obtaining one to help connect him to his parents. He has not done so, nor will have plans to do so, Hantei knows that he has moved on, and if he obtains a companion to remind him of his parents, then he will be driven back into misery over his loss.
Combat Personalities
Inexperienced
Hantei is a young shinobi, and an inexperienced fighter. His moves are predictable to more experienced fighters, and can be easily countered. On the battlefield, he is completely new to death and injury, and will often take time out of the fight to check on his companions to see if they are alright, and may ignore the battle entirely if they are not, calling out for help to get medical attention to the friend, regardless of what is going on around him.
A more strategic or experienced character can help explain a plan and he will be less predictable and/or less oriented to helping out friends in combat.
Also, Hantei believes himself ready to execute a criminal in combat, though he has never done so before. If this situation ever arises (for the first time), Hantei will not kill the target, but rather, burst into tears and back away, realizing that he wasn't ready to kill a person by his own hands. The third time this would happen, the effect will have worn off, and he will be ready to finish someone off.
Pacifism/Justice
When fighting an opponent that isn't evil or chaotic, Hantei likes to abstain conflict if possible. If the opponent is trying to kill him unjustly, or doing any action that would be considered evil or chaotic, Hantei will be provoked and attack the opponent, regardless of if the action is justified (part of his lawful personality: God is Law, don't turn your back from one or the other).
Hantei tries to deny personal vendettas, however, can't hold them back entirely. If the enemy is one who killed a friend or emotionally/mentally injured an friend then Hantei will not be effected by his inability to kill a person, if still active.
Improvised Fighting
Hantei is not a experienced strategist or fighter, for that, he will often make up his own strategies during combat, doing his best to guess what would do well against his opponent. He does not analyze the little details that separate him from a strategist: what his opponent is likely to do or move next, what details an ability might have, etc.
Appearance:
i1009.photobucket.com/albums/af220/itachiuchiha275_2009/adkjalsdkjf.jpg
Hantei has smooth, straight, white hair going across his face and reaching to his neck. A distinguishing characteristic that can still be seen is the bangs, covering up an eyepatch on his face, yet not completly. His other brown eye often looks like there is a lot of inner thought going on in his mind, perfectly placed on his oval-shaped head.
His tan skin makes him look slightly older than he really is, but the expressions he makes occasionally bring that to light. He wears white gloves to cover up the occassions where his talons would come out. He keeps his wings hidden, mostly, but during battle, has white wings of a swan.
He walks confidently around others, and likes to keep his appearance up for their opinions of him to be reached. His clothing is often tight to himself, as to ensure that his talons won't tear his clothing easily if he needs to use them.
His clothing, however, is often casual, that being blue jeans, a white shirt, sneakers, and no hat. This clothing boosts his humility
and other humble attributes. He has no other object on his person besides a draw bow, strapped onto his back, a bottle of ink given to him by a friend, and the clothing on his person, going along with the ideals of the church he was raised in to donate any extra items to others. He has sold all other items except the pouch that holds the items that he will eventually give away. He has no money of any kind on him.
An individual with great perception can see deep into his eyes that he is still suffering over the past, though he keeps it hidden. His other outworldy features try to convey a sense of experience and maturity that he otherwise doesn't have.
He has a poor sense of ballance on the ground, tripping especially after having been in flight for training, though trips even when he hasn't flown in some time. His sense of flight well makes up for it, however, he never travels with flight unless in an emergency.
He will often regress when alone, feeling down for the trivialties of others and regretting their misfortunes, somehow blaming them upon himself. Oftentimes, he will cry when alone, but stand tall when with others.

Prologue -- Perspective
I woke up on a fine summer day, and took a look outside. My wife was still asleep, taking every chance she could to grab a bit of it. We had a newborn child, and we were both exhausted, but she was more than me, she took care of most of the responsibilities. I had to be at work most of the day, while she was on leave. Fortunately, I had permission to stay in the village for my missions, so I could keep an eye on my family, the most important thing in the world to me.
I am a member of Kumoagakure's ANBU unit. I take care of those who would pose a threat to the peace that we have established, and eliminate them for the sake of the village. Though occasionally, I can't ask questions. I just have to do my orders and pray that they are just and fair.
Most of what I had that got me here was a simple yet odd reasoning: You wouldn't expect a man with wings to be an assassin. So no one sees it coming when I lift them into the air, and dive bomb them into some sharp rock out in the middle of nowhere. That's my signature move, but don't get me mistaken for a one trick pony, I have plenty more ways of assassinating people.
I walked over to the Raikage's tower, where I had been requested. I had a bad feeling, a premonition, that this would be an awful day for me. How little I knew. I opened the door, and sure enough, there he was. Our leader, in all his glory, sitting upon his chair and looking a bit odd: he seemed stressed, worried, and concerned.
"What's wrong, Raikage-san?" I asked.
"I'm afraidcwellc" he began. "I received news yesterday that multiple villages are demanding that we pay for the lives we took with our actions. Not everything we did was as clear or meaningful as the restcbut that is beside the point now."
"So there are advocates of war? Is this my next assignment?"
"Nocit's more than just some individuals. They gathered and demanded of their respective feudal lords that certain members of our ANBU unit be executed publicly. Well, it turns out, they just wanted you."
"They want me to give my life when I just started having a family? Not a chance! My boy needs me!"
"Exactly what we are going to replycyou are dismissed."
I left that day with concern. Are the other villages really going to go to such great lengths to get me and some other ANBU members for fulfilling our duties and missions to our village? I couldn't say for sure, I don't know how much I harmed other's families, and now that I had my own, I could begin to understand their point of view more than before. I knew that I had no limits in terms of protecting my family, and that was the main reason I joined this division to begin with.
Five years passed with relative ease. My wife got back to her shinobi work too, joining ANBU along my side. We made a great duo for fulfilling missions that would be impossible on our own, and got many difficult tasks completed.
Our son grew up, and while we remained as close as we could, sometimes the mission took us to far away lands. During that time, we hired a trusted friend to look after him. I detested every moment I wasn't being there, being his father. But I was doing this for him as well. I hoped he would understand one day. Perhaps I would try to explain to him when he was older.
One day, roughly six years since that dreadful day when the Raikage informed me of my want of execution, he called me in again. With my wife. First, we went and saw our child, and then we went over to his tower, fearful, as we should be.
"You two have made quite a name for yourselves, you know."
"Yes, Raikage-sama," I said. "Of course, we couldn't do it without each other."
"Of course," my wife said. We exchanged a loving glance.
"I'm afraidcour time is up. It has been 6 years since they made their request, now they are making it a demand. Unfortunately, you two have made so much of a name for yourself, that they are demanding that you two be executed, no one else."
"What!?" my wife said.
"Can't we just say no?" I said.
"If we don't, the other villages said they would agree to a temporary truce, and burn the village down any way it needs to in order to get to you two, where they would torture you and eventually end your lives. It was quite cruel, the way they said it."
"You can't accept this!!" my wife said, fearful.
"Raikage-sama, is there any chance that they would just accept me and leave my wife be?" I said.
"What are you saying! This isn't a time to joke around!" she said.
"I'm not. I love you both too much to let you leave this world." I said
"Unfortunately, the only deal was you both," he said. "We could provide protection for you, but I think that many lives would be lost in return."
"cpossibly, even our child."
"cyes."
My wife was crying. I brought her to lean on me. I was trying hard not to do the same, knowing there was only 1 answer.
"We know what we must do. For our son and our village," I said. Upon saying it, I broke a few tears.
"You will never be forgotten," he said. "Should I let your son know of your sacrifice?"
"No. Let him grow up to understand the decision we had," I said. "No doubt he will cross it one day."
"Very well. You must meet in the Waterfall village exactly two days from today," he said.
I don't want to go into detail of what happened those two days. My wife and I were crying, spending as much time as we could with each other and our son. Our son was no fool, as much as my wife was blind to, as to the situation. He knew something was wrong. He asked me on a few occasions, but I couldn't tell him.
On that fateful day, we left the house at early hours to go over to the waterfall village.
Our executioners were waiting there, along with many families who were hurt by our actions. They were yelling, demanding for their loved ones back. We just looked blankly into their glares and screams. There was nothing else we could do but accept our fate.
They tied the nooses around our necks. One man pulled the lever andc
Chapter 1 -- Tragedy
"No! I won't go! I won't!" I said.
"Your parents want me to be sure you're going to school, Hantei. You have to go to get smarter," Mikare said.
Mikare was a good friend of my parents. They were out on another of their long missions to some unknown land. I was jealous, I wanted to be with them, on adventures to mysterious places that I could only dream of. Maybe there was a vast desert where they had to eat snakes. Regardless, there would be no school there.
Eventually, Mikare forced me out of the house. I went in the direction of school, but turned another corner when Mikare went back in the house. I bumped into someone.
"Sorry," I said, looking up to seecMikare. I turned and ran.
He was in front of me again. "Where do you think you're going, young man?"
I reminded myself that this was an illusion, that Mikare wasn't actually there, so I walked right through him. ExceptcI couldn't. Weird.
As I grudingly went to school, I found myself an hour late. I smiled. At least I got part of the day off.
The school day went on like normal, the teacher explaining historical concepts, me ignoring him, him shouting at me. Not like history intrested me anyway. I really wanted to go into a shinobi school, but my parent's wouldn't have it. They wanted me safe and protected from the ongoings of the ninja world. So I went here, the boring history school. Where everyone learns about the sage of the six paths and what he did for humanity. How the old times were, yada yada. I didn't really care.
Fortunately for me, I had a secret from my parents. I had one of their books, Shinobi Basics. I learned everything I wanted to from there, staying devoted to the thousands of pages of everything I would have learned in the academy.
My parents returned home unexpectedly early that evening, and I quickly closed my book and hid it before they went up the stairs to my room to say hello.
I gave my parents a hug. I loved them both, though I would never say it out loud. Only the girls said that stuff, I was too cool.
"Hantei, you have grown so muchcI think it's time for the ritual," my dad said.
"Really Dad?! Woo!!!" I said.
"Dear, does this have to be now?"
"I'm afraid it does. We hardly get to see him, wouldn't it be nice to let himself and others know that we are always with him?"
"Oh, alright," she said, partly giving into him, partly my puppy eyes.
We walked down to the door I was never able to open, our ritual room. I had cousins who were three years older than me show off their wings and claws to me all the time, and I wanted to finally be able to retort them with my own wings.
Father sat on a mat, and invited me over to sit in front of him. Mom couldn't be in the room while I was having the ritual, but I knew she would be worried for every second of it. The ritual, as I was told, wasn't painless, a test of becoming a man.
"Pick the bird in the room, Hantei. One that really connects with your soul," he said.
"What does that mean?" I said.
"You will know when you see it. Everyone in our clan does," he said.
I looked around at the birds, when I spotted a glorious white bird, about my height, sun shining on him. I looked into his eyes and he looked into mine, and I knew this was the one.
"DadcI know. It's that one," I said, pointing at the bird.
He didn't question my decision. He went over, got the bird, and placed it on my shoulders.
The ritual enacted, and I was in great pain, the ritual wasn't painless, ha! It was the most pain I've had in my life. I took it, fighting the urge to collapse. Around eons later, the ritual completed. My father clapped. My mother rushed into the room, hearing my cries, and hugged me.
"I'm proud of you, son," he said.
I was proud of myself too, I thought. I hugged Mom back, and had the urge to try my wings out.
"I'm afraid I set this up for today because we have to go again, son. Sorry about all of this," he said.
"Donft worry, Dad. I know you're doing great things for the village. Can I go to shinobi village now that I got the wings?" I said.
"No!" mom said, having had too much of my want for becoming a shinobi.
Dad got close and whispered, "Not right now, pal. Your mom is too stressed from the ritual. I'll try and pull some strings though, and get it to happen without her knowing."
I smiled and went off to my room.
Over the next few days, Mikare let me go over to the shinobi academy, having heard from my dad about what happened. He was rather enthused by the fact that I was willingly going to school rather then him using genjutsu to get me to go to school. I found myself bored, however, to learn that we were doing things that I had already covered a few chapters ago in the book. I looked like a genius in the classroom, though I had just committed more time to teaching myself than they did.
I was also the coolest kid in school, too, after I showed off my wings for the first time. I liked to keep them out all the time, and others acknowledged me and became my friends quickly. I often spent my lunches trying to jump off the playground's money bars and fly, though I rarely achieved anything but bruises. The kids were encouraging me on, of course, so they didn't really take me as any less cool than I was before.
My parents came back a week later, and went up and gave them hugs this time, but they looked miserable.
"Did something happen?" I asked.
Mom looked up, a fake smile on her face. "Nope," she said.
The next few days were weird. I heard Mom and Dad crying in their rooms, and every time the looked at me, they were about to burst into tears as well. Mom tried to hide it more than Dad did, she thought that I didn't know what was going on. I knew something was wrong, and Dad knew I knew as well.
This time, I said, I would follow them when they left. And if they needed help, I would jump in to protect them with my new shinobi skills.
They left early in the morning, and if I hadn't been listening for it, I wouldnft have caught it. I slowly got out of bed, and quickly dashed out before my parents would be too far away. They were going in the direction, as I remembered in my history class, of the waterfall village. I wondered what they would be doing in that small village. Maybe catching some bad guy.
When we got there, I stayed back behind the trees, careful to make sure my parents didn't see me. Fortunately, they didn't. This was an odd scene, I thought. There was a large crowd and my parents were standing on a podium. The crowd was shouting stuff, but I wasn't listening. I was waiting for my parents to bust out and kill the evildoer in the crowd and run back home. I was ready back as well, I knew that I would have to be back before them, or they would start asking questions.
Two men went up to mom and dad and put something around their necks. I wondered what their plan to escape this was, when a man pulled a lever, and the floor dropped from beneath them.
Despair. Agony. I wanted to turn around, but my body wouldn't let me, my eyes were fixed open, despite my desire to close them. I shouted, cried, and everyone finally acknowledged my presence. They turned from me, went back home. I did nothing but cry and shout in that spot for the next two days, ignoring hunger and thirst.
A man showed up, and I didn't really acknowledge that he was there. He walked up to my body, lumped on the ground, crying, and held out a hand.
"Hantei, you've been here for five days without food or water," he said.
"So?" I said, my voice dry. "What of it?"
"You shouldn't kill yourself for this. Your parents sacrifice was to save you," he said.
I pondered his words before realizing that I didn't care. "Why would they think this would be the best thing for me?" I pictured their faces and cried some more.
Ten minutes later, he placed some water and bread beside me. "If you ever a new home, ask around Kumoagakure where you can find Mikage. They will lead you to me."
I looked up, and he was gone. I took the bread, and began to eat it, and drink the water.
I began to start drinking and eating again, I ate the worms from the ground and the water from a nearby stream. I remembered my cousins saying that eating worms is another sign that you are a man, and although I tried one before the ritual, it tasted not awful this time through.
Chapter 2 -- The Church
After a month, I realized that my moping was getting rediculus, and I walked back to the village. After arriving there, I started asking around for Mikage.
The fifth villager I asked knew what I was talking about, and led me to the far side of the village, showing me a huge temple. I had seen it before, but never knew what it was. He walked to the doors, unsure of what would be behind them, unsure of what awaited him in his future.
As I walked in, I saw many people around joking and having fun. I wondered what the place could be, but decided that it could wait, and asked for Mikage.
"Oh, you're a new one. Well, Mikage isn't here right now, so you'll have to adress your concerns to me."
"I was told I could stay here by him," I said strongly.
"Alright, we can find some bed that isn't being used," another said. "I'm Nakure. Nice to meet youc"
"Hantei," I told him.
"I like your name, Hantei. That means justice, right?" he said. "You'll get along well with us."
I felt at ease with this person, I didn't know why. Some radiating energy that just came off of him calmed my nerves that were dominating me before, and helped me relax and have a good time around him. I felt no need to hold my question back.
"So, what is this place?" I asked
One of the people gave a slight giggle, and I gave a quick glance to see who it was. A man, around my age, obviously viewing himself as superior to me.
"It's the church, of course," he told me as I looked back. "What did you think it was?"
"I didn't know," I replied without scorn. I turned back, "So, you all believe in God?"
"We all believe in Araqiel as our God, yes. We are the Church of Kaibasha here in Kumoagakure. It would take me forever to explain, and seeing as I don't like doing that when people can learn on their own, I would like to give you a quick tour, if that's fine with you," Nakure said. "You have to know where things are eventually."
"Sure," I said, and began following him out of the room.
During the tour, I noted specific locations, such as the library, training room, and, most importantly, my own room. If I got lost, I didn't want to have to rely on others to get back to it. Going over their locations many times in my head, I said my farewells to Nakure and set off to the library. It was grandiose to say the least, no doubt a copy of every book of the village was here. I smiled, glad to know that I wouldn't be left in the dark. Books were an excellent source of information, as I had learned back homecI turned my thoughts away before I could remember that past. I had moved on, I couldnft spend time remembering what once was. It would only hurt me in the long run.
I spent the next few weeks in the library 90% of the time, leaving only to eat. Turns out I felt more awake than normal in the church, and there was something allowing me to stay awake longer than I thought I needed to. I got a few hours of sleep a night, in the library, and got back up quickly to continue. I read all about the Kaibasha religion, in the god Araqiel and the religion as a whole. I learned about the 7 ideals, about the rules and devotion, and about the potential to help others. It was an intricate religion, and I wanted to ask Nakure about some things. I set off from the library 9 days after I went in, and ran into Mikage shortly after leaving.
"Thank you," I said.
"It was really all I could do," he said. "So I did it. Take no need to repay me."
Before I could thank him again, I decided to let it be. Humility was a ideal of the religion, and Mikage clearly demonstrated it. I didn't want to devalue his actions with my own comments.
"Do you know where I could find Nakure?" I asked him.
"Nakure, eh? Well, he is typically found in the training room," Mikage said. "Would you like me to show you the way?"
"No, thanks," I said. "He showed me where it was before."
"Alright then, Hantei, I wish you a good day. May Araqiel guide your path to where you are searching," he said.
I went over to the training room, making a few wrong turns along the way. Turns out being in that library for so long had effected my memory of where the places were, and when I finally got there, I was a bit frustrated, though I didn't show it.
Sure enough, Nakure was in the center of the room. The room was a lake, the size of one and the depth of one, with a middle island, no bridges or paths across. Fortunately for me, I could control chakra, it was one of the things that I practiced at home. I understood the concepts, and could bring chakra to my hands. How much more effort would sending it to my feet be?
I tried to sent the chakra to my feet and walked into the water. I slipped and fell into the water, embarrassed. I quickly stood back up and stood by the edge and called out, "Nakure?"
Nakure opened his eyes from meditation, and walked across the water. Upon reaching my side, he stood on the ground. "What is it, Hantei?" he asked.
"I have a few questions to you regarding Kaibasha," I said.
"Go ahead," he said.
"Is it possible for there to be two separate entities of Araqiel? One who guides humanity and one who acts on it's behalf?"
"Sure, but I have not seen anyone who believes as such," he said. "Next question?"
"Is there a heaven?"
"Depends on who you ask," he said. "Next?"
I felt a bit mad that he didn't answer my question, but continued, "Araqiel is a lion?"
"No, Araqiel is bodyless. But, when he enters our realm, he takes upon the form of a lion. The same rings true for his other components."
"In the church's moral opinion," I started, not wanting him to answer incompletely this time. "Is it alright to carry out a death sentence based on revenge upon people who killed family members and friends?"
"Not accepting repentance is always against our religion. If the person in question had refused to repent for their actions upon knowing them, then they are faced with death. If the choose to repent, they should be accepted into the community. Without this option, there is an endless cycle of hatred, and revenge goes on until everyone dies."
That, I said to myself, was a good answer. The one I had been looking for in regards to my parents. I knew that my parents were killed on basis of revenge for others loved ones, it was made clear by the crowd around my parent's execution site. I knew they were wrong for doing it, I just never had a clear reason why until this was said.
"Thank you, Nakure," I said.
"Any time," he replied, and walked back to the island.
I spent the next few days back in the library looking up some Ninjutsu in the book, when I decided to finally start training on my own. I went over to the training room, and began practicing chakra control in my feet.
It took a good week to be able to walk on the water beneath my feet, and finally, I could go over to the island. Nakure was there, unlike normal, so I took the time to myself freely, taking a look around the place I was so curious about while training.
There was a box, placed in the exact middle of the island, with a keyhole. I wondered what was in there, but continued on. On one side of the island, there was a dirt path. I followed it, and foundctombstones. I glanced over to the left, and stared. My parents were buried here.
I stared at their graves for 10 minutes, giving way to a bit of tears, depositing some flowers on both of their graves before taking off to the church again.
I spotted someone behind the trees, so I called out, "Who's there?"
Nakure walked up, and said, "Do you know the connection with all of these tombstones, Hantei?"
"No, what is it?" I replied.
"They all belong to someone close to a member of our religion. A good deal of people here have dealt with tragedies similar to your own," he said. "But that's not all there is to this place. Do you know why they are on the island?"
"Why is that?"
"Only shinobi can get to these graves. Shinobi have combat experience themselves, and understand the pain that is caused by hatred and war. The stones are here in order to keep those who might harm our memories of loved ones out, those who don't understand our pain," he said.
I pondered his comment before saying, "I'm going to head back to the library."
"Alright, let me know if you ever want to talk, Hantei. Same goes with anyone here, we're all open to it."
"Thank you," I replied.
Chapter 3 -- Assault
I had been going out more over the past few months, seeing more of the sun and outside world. Most of my was still spent in the church, but now I was gaining some friends from the outside world as well. Strangely, I had become friends with the other kid my age, and we were both working on shinobi training together.
I knew everyone in the church at this point, though some people hadn't visited the church yet. The kid my age was named Namikawa, and his parents died when he was born. There was also Pon, the gardener, Mari, the Cleaner, and Rantei, the Artisan. They were all ex-criminals who had come to the church seeking repentance, and the church accepted. Now they work here on the grounds, seeking repentance from god and the such. I approved of the church's method of going about things.
I had gotten closer and closer to Araqiel as a personal God myself. I truly believed in his existence, besides the fact of endless documentation of villages being moved due to a dam breaking down, and other miracles that could only be the work of Araqiel himself.
I had one strange friend outside the church, his name was Mankei. He had been through quite a bit himself, and was oftentimes alone. I took it upon myself to look after him and to be to him what the church was to me: a source of guidance and salvation. I listened to what he had to say, and replied with advice that I would think of, hoping it wouldn't lead to more issues than resolutions.
One day, Mankei seemed a bit more distressed than usual. He was concerned about something, as he often was, but didn't tell me what it was.
"Come on, Mankei, you know I'm here to talk to, right?" I said.
"I knowcI just can't tell you what it is," he replied.
"Is it aboutc" I asked.
"Yes," he said.
"Alright, you don't have to tell me now, but if you ever want to talk about it, I'm always just a call away," I told him.
He didn't look up. "Thanks," he said, and left.
I went back to the church to practice with Namikawa on Ninjutsu, when a knock came from the door.
"Come in," I said, pretty much a fully integrated member at this point. I felt it was my home too, now.
A man I never met before walked into the room like it was his own place. I wondered who this was.
"Excuse me, can I help you?" I asked him.
"A newcomer? What's your name?"
"Hantei," I said.
"Thatfs an odd clan namecwhere are you from?"
"It's not my surname, it's my first name," I replied.
"So we're friends already, eh?" he said. "Well then! I'm Mari, then."
"Mari? I've never heard the others talk about you," I said.
He got a bit jokingly irritated and said, "They havent, eh? Well, I'll show them who they can forget whenc"
"Ahh, Mikan! Welcome back!" Nakura said, entering the room.
"Mikan?" I said. "Isn't that the onec"
"Yep!" Nakura said, looking at me. "Now what were you saying about showing me something?"
"Eh, never mind," he said, realizing the mix up. "What's new, besides the newcomer?" he said.
"Nothing really. It's been a bit quiet around these parts," he said. "I'm quite liking the change."
"What happened?" I asked, interrupting the conversation.
"We get attacked every now and then," Nakura said.
"Clearly, they sensed that I was coming back and ran for their lives," Mikan said.
"In your dreams, Mikan," Mikage said and walked in to the conversation. "I was wondering why they haven't been attacking myself."
"Who attacks the church?" I asked.
"Just some adults who have nothing better to doc"
"Why?"
"That isn't your business, Hantei. There are personal vendettas that often cause others to strike at the church, that is all you need to know."
Iwas a bit angry, but not at the comment that I didn't need to know. More angry about the fact that people took out their revenge on a church, not just a person. Before I could comment, his radio buzzed, and he left the room.
"Mankei?" I asked.
"Yeah, Hantei," he said, voice shaking. "I just wanted to see you alone, over by the waterfall village."
I was shaken to the core. The waterfall village held some bad memories for me, but of course, Mankei didn't know that.
"Sure Mankei, I'll head over there right away," I said.
I went back in the room, and informed everyone that I would be back soon.
"Where are you going?" Nakure asked.
"The waterfall village. I have a friend who has a question or two with me," I said.
"Isn't that where your parentsc" Mikage began.
"Yeah," I interrupted. "But he doesn't know that. He just wants to ask me a question. See you later!" I said.
"Be careful," Namikawa said. Mikage was silent.
I left the church and headed off to the waterfall village. I went over to where Mankei was, his head down as if disgraced or crying. Possibly torn over about something.
"What's wrong, Mankei?" I asked.
"Hantei, theyctheyc" he said. "Your parentsc"
"What about my parents?" I asked.
"Theyckilled my dad," he said.
At that point, I was stunned. There was nothing I could say or do, and at that moment, another thing happened.
At least twenty shinobi dropped from the trees above, surrounding us both. Mankei stood up and went into the crowd, leaving me surrounded by foes.
"What do you want with me?" I asked.
"We know what your parents did to us, Hantei," one said. "They ruined our lives and families!"
"Now it's time for us to redeem what they meant to us," another said.
"Revenge isn't redeeming for what happened, if you are unwilling to accept my repentance, then there is no point of your actions," I said. "Also, where is revenge in killing me?"
"We ain't just killin yeh!" another said. "We're getting yeh tortured first!"
I did something that I hadn't done since my parents were alive, I released my wings.
They were all too prepared for this, however, and grabbed on to me before I could take flight, using superior strength to drop me to the ground.
For the first time since my parents died, I was afraid. I was afraid for myself, and what they would do to me.
All of the sudden, a kunai passed over my head, and the fists that were about to hit me disappeared. In less than a second, I was gone from the place, in the hands of someone I couldn't see clearly.
I spent the rest of the time figuring out that it was Mikage that saved me from the hands of those ruffians. The entire conversation made more sense to me now. Well, now my past would cause the church harm as well.
The next few days in the church, I pondered if I should leave to avoid them taking up the burden of the people that would inevitably attack the church. I decided that it was best for me to face this problem myself, I left the church.
The kids found me again, waiting for me to leave the church. They charged up to me, and I offered no form of resistance.
They punched me, cut me, and beat me to the border of unconsciousness for hours. Before long, the sun came up, and they were still at it. The boys ran for it as Nakure showed up outside, spotting me being beaten.
"What were you thinking, Hantei?" he asked.
"I didn't want to push the burden of their anger upon the church and you all," I said.
He grabbed me and looked me in the eyes. "You listen here, Hantei. You are a part of our church now, and whatever lies in your burdens lies in ours, and vice versa. Don't go wandering off alone to get beaten up for no reason."
Namikara walked out to join in the conversation, he had been listening. "If you really want to help the church deal with the burdens, though, you can enroll at the shinobi academy with me," he said.
"Sure," I replied.
So, I joined the shinobi academy, and quickly excelled through the program, having learned everything I needed to at this point. I passed the second year I was there, with the top grades in the school. Pleased and ready to move on to the next level, I began my adventure as a shinobi, and would inevitably come back to the church to become one of its true members.
