The Cathedral of Enlightenment (a cave):
This cave is located high up in Takigakure near the top of the famous waterfall the village is known for. He treks all the way up here to enjoy the peace and quiet nature has to offer, as well as to gather the herbs he uses in his concoctions. The cave’s entrance was once well hidden, however, and Kaane had passed the entrance many times on his hikes before he finally noticed it, as it is barely large enough to crawl through and is hidden by high grass. It still is well hidden, but Kaane keeps a small sign near the entrance in order to mark its position that anyone can notice if they are attentive.
The inside of the cave is relatively large and well lit by torches that Kaane keeps maintained consistently. The temperature of the cave is invariably 60 degrees Fahrenheit, no matter what the weather is like outside. Due to the cave’s seclusion, no large animals make the cave their home, and only a few scattered insects scurry around the cave near the entrance. The cave is made up of three parts, beginning with the main chamber, around the size of a small church, with stalagmites and stalactites lining the back corners of the cave. The rest of the cave walls are naturally smooth. From the entrance, if one looked carefully, one could see two passageways snaking down into the underground at the back of the cave. At the end of the passage on the left, Kaane keeps some training and laboratory equipment for processing the herbs he collects in a cylindrical chamber (about the size of an 18 wheeler with a trailer). Kaane also keeps a neatly categorized tally record of all the techniques he has learned in black chalk on the smooth rock walls in this chamber as a way to keep him encouraged whilst training. The passage on the right leads to a small pool of water formed from the waterfall above leaking into the chamber about five feet deep in the middle and 15 feet wide, forming an arc around the small peninsula of land next to the passage’s end. The temperature of the water is freezing until warmed up. At the back end of this chamber, a dazzling display of purple amethyst lines the walls, creating a crystalline mural that almost glows in the torchlight.
Here, Kaane is at peace. He welcomes anyone who enters the “Cathedral of Enlightenment,” as he named it when he first found it. He even finds himself actually enjoying others’ company here, as though the cave itself could temporarily heal him of his social awkwardness. Indeed, the cave has a calming effect on any who enter it, especially in the amethyst pool chamber.
