Raika decided to train a technique from his one of his clans, the Tokagekuran. He walked to the clearing he usually did his training in, with his serpent companion Nera at his side. The jutsu he was about to learn involved the ability to elongate his tongue and use it as a tactical weapon. The best part of the technique was the lack of handseals, meaning Raika could use it to complement his taijutsu and his sword.
However, to begin his training, Tatsu would have to concentrate chakra using hand signs. It would also help to know the underlying biology concept of growing tissues so that he could correctly grow his tongue quickly as well as shortening it once again. Cell biology was important, and so Tatsu began with that. He understood the basics, thus he just needed to apply them. His chakra would act as a catalyst for the near instant growth of his tongue. The young shinobi closed his eyes and began to concentrate, focusing his mind on the growth of his tongue. The division of cells through mitosis was usually relatively slow, with a complex system of biochemical and structural mechanisms culminating in the division of cells and thus the replacement of dead cells or—as in this case—the growth of tissues in the body. Tatsu focused on this particular aspect, picturing how to use the energy of his chakra to speed up the process. It would take some trial and error of course.
Thus, it was time for Raika to begin his attempt at growing the cells of his tongue. He began by making some hand signs and held the last one, focusing his chakra on his tongue. He concentrated the energy within each cell, then worked to cause the cells to grow. At first, there was very little effect. Tatsu could tell nothing was happening. He began to pour in some more chakra, thinking that the energy to do this would probably have to be relatively great. Finally, he began to feel a tingle in his tongue, much like the one he felt when he grew horns around his body using another Tokagekuran technique. The chakra was causing the cells of his tongue to multiply rather quickly. Tatsu realized he needed quickly give the growth some direction, otherwise he could expand his tongue to the point where he would block his air passage and asphyxiate. He needed the tongue muscle to grow forward in length, not in width or girth. He began the flow his chakra in such that direction, coaxing the growth and multiplication of his cells into a length-wise growth. The tingling intensified while Raika intensified the chakra. Soon, Tatsu began to feel his tongue actively growing, and so he opened his mouth to let it go out. It felt almost alien: he had feeling in the muscle that was growing, but Tatsu felt no control over it. Small flail-like twitches began to manifest along the length of the now meter long tongue. Tatsu stopped its growth at this point, deciding it best to start trying to figure out how to move it.
Tatsu decided to begin with small movements. He willed the last half of his tongue to sway to the right. He attempted to move it the way he would normally manipulate his tongue. A small jolt at the very end of his tongue told him that he was doing the right thing. He kept going, trying to further move his elongated muscle towards the right. Slowly, but surely, the end of his tongue began to follow his eyes in the direction Raika wanted. Centimeter by centimeter, the tongue went further towards the right. Once he was satisfied, Tatsu began to sway it towards the other direction, first by simply letting it fall and then using the momentum to whip it up and hold it in the position on the left. He let the tongue fall once more, then began to try and curl it up. He succeeded after a couple of minutes, so he decided to curl it backwards. After a couple more movements, Raika decided to shorten his tongue…although. A thought occurred to Raika: perhaps it would be good to keep his tongue permanently able to lengthen. Perhaps not keep it at full length, it would be anatomically too difficult. However, he could condense the musculature and give it waves, making the tongue fold into many layers in the back of his mouth. This idea sprouted from his past studies of chameleons and their tongues, which inspired this idea. However, by not keeping the total length possible on a permanent basis, Tatsu could use the technique to focus on further lengthening and covering of the tongue with cells that could be disposed of, protecting his tongue from permanent damage or infections, as well as keeping Raika from actually tasting everything his elongated tongue touches.
Raika used his chakra to fold the length of his tongue which he had already grown many times over, until it resembled his normal tongue. He then stretched it back out, and focused his chakra through it once more. He began to grow it again, this time without using hand signs. His tongue grew to about ten meters, the limit for this level of the technique. Tatsu used a bit of flowing chakra to keep the snake-like muscular organ off of the ground the whole time, and once he finished growing it, he used the chakra to help manipulate the tongue. He even decided to test the tongue by attempting to pick up a nearby short stick. Tatsu slowly wrapped the end of the tongue around the stick and began to lift it from the ground bit by bit. With a whip-like motion Raika then threw the stick away. Now Tatsu needed to shorten his tongue back to how he had it. Using his chakra, the young shinobi sloughed off the cells composing his tongue as he retracted it back into his mouth, absorbing the matter that had made the elongated tongue back into his body. The process was slow, but eventually the tongue was back to normal, or at least the new normal. Tatsu proceeded to practice lengthening and retracting his tongue many times, getting faster and faster each time. After some time, he even stopped relying on as much chakra as before to do the same work, making the process much more efficient. He decided to rest after being satisfied with how much he had progressed, hoping it was enough.
