— flashback —
The shadows of two opposing forces settled across the open expanse of some training field within the realm of Cha-no-Kuni. The owners of the silhouettes locked eyes from a distance of two meters apart; the younger of the two, Norishige, held a bokken in a low grip as the older man, revealed as Sooun kept his own at a vertical hold in front of him. He would nod to the boy:
"Come, padawan."
With a burst of speed, Nori went toward his enemy with the weapon behind his back. As he would come to withdraw his sword from its held position and strike the man, Sooun would vanish before him - only to reappear behind him in a flash as the pommel of his bokken dug into the back of the student's skull. Norishige ceased movement; only momentarily, for when he was struck, the boy dropped his wooden blade and fell face forward into the ground. His sensei simply shook his head and walked away for Nori would be knocked out for quite some time.
A splash of water via Suiton ninjutsu would awaken Norishige from his twenty minute rest. The sun had settled on the horizon now and the sky was full of warm colors of various tints. As the boy rubbed the back of his head, his master would laugh in a cackling manner.
"If I hadn't awaken you, you would probably still be knocked out. (he took a sip of his brewing tea) ..Ah - that is why you have to learn the basics of Gyakusatsu: the technique I just used on you will be a valuable asset to you in time," the old man hopped up from his seated position and picked up his bokken while his tea steamed on the table it was sat on. Picking himself up from one knee, the pupil would also regain hold on his practice weapon.
"I will briefly explain to you the technique I just used," his master said as he approached the open field. "The 'Hidden Blow,' as it is known as, is a rather low ranking move in this style of swordsmanship, but a useful one nonetheless. All you need to do is time the use of the Kawarimi no Jutsu properly and poof! (he demonstrated what had happened to Norishige) You'll be behind your opponent and capable of delivering a stunning blow within a short amount of time."
Sooun beckoned to the recovering Norishige with his blade, "Now—come!"
Norishige had listened intently to his sensei and with a 'hai,' the boy broke off into an erratic run toward Sooun as he quickly unsheathed the bokken at his back. His master would swing horizontally as he made it into striking range and Nori reacted quickly. His sword managed to counter the blow and in a poof, he appeared behind Sooun with a Body Switch technique. He went for the final blow as he mustered enough physical force to leave the old man dazed for hours as the unexpected happened: the veteran Yagyu would reappear behind Norishige with his own Kawarimi. Instead of striking the boy again, he simply poked him in the back.
"Hey you - watch that anger.." Norishige was startled by the man's swift movements and turned to face him quickly. "Since I am your master and just told you to basically come at me with that move, I was expecting it. Don't be surprised if others happen to expect that, too; few, however, will... unless they're of the Gyakusatsu style." Obviously Sooun had a soft spot for his hard boiled pupil, but he still required him to work for his techniques while restraining his negative intentions. The old man clasped his hands into seals as ten bunshin manifested from the lake on his property by way of Suiton: Daibakure Mizu Bunshin No Jutsu.
"Here, you want to hit something so badly, do so to them. They will take my place as your opponent. Be wary - they can explode, but if you time your use of Buro-hitoshirezu properly, then you may avoid the consequences of your hostility."
"Hai, Yagyu-sama." Norishige said as he sheathed his blade and readied himself. The water clones had bokken just like he and seemed prepared as well. Two of them ran toward their target with blades raised overhead.
As the blade of the first one came down, Norishige would strike. He utilized the Hidden Blow as he slipped behind one clone and struck it in its neck. The thing would explode, causing minor recoil damage to Nori before its twin erupted into water like a chain reaction. That second blast sent Norishige to his knee as this time three more of the Sui-bunshin came rushing at him. He had seen what Sooun meant now.
In his Killing Posture, Norishige allowed the trio to advance - with consecutive movements, the boy placed himself behind one after the other and stabbed the final one in the nape of its neck before it burst into a pool of water. The other two clones suffered the same fate as the former, but their attacker would go unscathed this bout. A twisted smile crept across his lips as he started to get a feel for the basic technique.
"Very good, very good..." the old man stroked his beard before motioning to the remaining five clones: "Attack!"
The five moved as one unit before Norishige as he prepped himself. He would counter the blow of one before using a Kawarimi to replace himself with another clone as the two splashed into the ground from their contact. During this time, one clone would attack from his flank, seeing an opening, but its blade would welcome the recoil of hitting the ground as Nori reappeared behind it and delivered a vicious kick to its hindquarters. While he was unable to keep himself from taking the blow, the recoil damage also hit the fourth bunshin which erupted right after its triplet.
From a vantage point leapt the final water Sooun - it had been waiting patiently for its attack while its kin worn on the body of the youth. Norishige would look up and roll to his right, just barely missing a blow to the shoulder from the clone; promptly, he gained his stature and placed his wooden blade at his back. This would be the final bout. The two combatants circled one another before Norishige went in to strike; as a counter, the bunshin ducked and went for an impaling move to Nori's chest. It would have been a critical blow had it succeeded in its endeavors - however, the boy timed his Kawarimi just right as he vanished behind the kneeling clone and bashed at its skull with the hilt of the bokken. His Buro-hitoshirezu had the same effect as his master's own, for the Sui-clone fell to the ground before its body calmly returned to its liquid-state.
"Good job, Yamada-padawan. I can see your awareness increasing with each technique you learn..." the old man finished his tea before he headed into his home. Norishige would go to retrieve his standard weaponry and dart off into the night. His master knew that he was a creature of the night and left him to his nocturnal proclivities...
