I'm returning to the rain(Travel)

The constant thumping from his feet hitting the ground started to become mindnumbing so Emi had to make sure not to become all too unaware of the surroundings. But thanks to his friend Zetsubô he was able to think on other things and remain fairly energetic. To make sure that he was on the correct route, he stopped once in a while to check the map and compass until he continued on. When they crossed the borders, they was faced with a broad and thick mist that gave Emi a bad chill down his spine, but as he knew the village needed him, he entered it while careful Zetsubô wasn't too far away.

Description: Tracking means the user found a trail if they gain the check, while failure means they did not. If user fails this initial skill check, they simply cannot find that particular trail. After finding a trail, further checks may be necessary depending on the situation. Darkness, falling rain/snow, a dust storm, moving from one terrain to another (such as from sand to rock), one trail splitting into 2 or crossing water are examples why a user might need another Tracking check. Look in Task Skills thread found in the Skills and Traits Index for more information. Each time learned user gets 5 die roll to increase the skill.

The mist was so dense, that Emi was unable to discover any sign of what time it was but a darker environment. He expected it to be around nightfall, which made it quite dangerous to be running in a thick mist. So Emi slowed down until he had a steady walking pace while watching for some marks that could be used to localize himself on the map. But the only things he could discover around himself was shadows and cold plains hidden behind the mist. What made it even worse what that he had previously walked away from one of the trade routes to take a faster but smaller road. The mist now hid it and made it difficult to follow the once normal route. Emi got a little frustrated that those things always had to happen when he was in a hurry, but he knew that he wouldn't be capable of finding his way unless he calmed down, so he took a couple of deep breath and knelt into the mud. His hand hovered slowly on the surface of the mud, trying to localize any sign of a print or kind of surface indicating on that he was on a correct path. But as mud have the tendency of having a rough surface normally, Emi found several of possible holes that could be from someone walking by.

The land of rain must be one of the most annoying places to track someone at.

He sighed loudly as he approached the first possible footprint and started to examine it. Zetsubô walked up to Emi to see what he was doing, but Emi forced him away with his hand, as he didn't want his friend to ruin the imprint. The mist was still blocking his view, so he had to lean as close as possible to get a good visual on the hole while he scanned it with his hand. The length and width of the hole reminded him of his own shoes, but slightly bigger, but as he reached the bottom of the hole, he felt that it had several bumps that were too big for someone to have walked over. But just to make sure that it wouldn't possible be a footstep, Emi made a footprint right next to it and tried to compare the two. When he had felt on the bottom of it, he nodded to himself as he confirmed it probably wasn't made from any humanoid.

Wonder how much off course I've traveled. I wasn't that far from the gates when the mist hit us.

During a quick dash towards the next hole, he discovered a small broken twig with something attached to it. So Emi stopped in his step and picked up the twig to examine it further. He didn't have enough knowledge about tracking to know what weight would be necessary to break the twig, or what kind of shoes it could've been, but he started to get his hopes up. Since he wanted to be able to save the twig, he carefully removed the piece of fabrics that was attached to it. To be able to see it more clearly, Emi blew a steady stream of air at the fabric to have the mist to move away from his sight. When he was able to see it clearly, he noticed that it wasn't a common material, it was actually the same material that had been used to make his own cloak. He removed some of the dirt from the piece of cloth and compared it to his own cloak, and quickly realized that it even had the same color.

I must be very close, or have I gone in circles?

To make sure that it wasn't a piece from his cloak, Emi quickly scanned through it to see that it hadn't been ripped. But it was still whole, which made Emi rather thrilled that he had found proof that another ninja, and maybe even an ANBU had been traveling that way. Emi would however still need to know what direction the ninja had traveled, as he easily could've walked pass the gate since he hadn't been capable of seeing any obvious marks on the maps. So Emi continued on to the second hole while crossing his fingers that it'd be the ninjas footprints. The hole was quite significantly larger than his own feet, and the width wasn't very different, which quickly made Emi loose some of his hopes. When he allowed his right hand follow the walls down into the hole to see the depth, he noticed that it was a lot more shallow than his own, which made him leave the hole immediately as the last proofs confirmed it wasn't a ninja.

But if the ninja had his cloak ripped that close to the ground, why wouldn't he have any footprints nearby?

Even though the mist had cleared slightly, he was incapable of seeing any tree close enough for the ninja to have been traveling in to have his ripped cloak fall down there. Emi didn't know what information he had been missing, but he still had to localize the village gates, so he hurried towards the third hole to avoid taking too long thinking about the cloth. After a quick scan through the hole, he strangely found it to be practically identical to the previous hole. He quickly turned his head back at the old hole before reaching for the bottom of it. Both of the holes had the same depth, so Emi started to feel some more in the hole using his right hand and found some revealing bumps. It was a footprint after all. When he had realized that, he swiftly estimated the path the ninja had been traveling and ran off in the direction. It didn't take long before he and Zetsubô rushed out from the thick mist and saw the cave that was the new entrance to the gate.
