He'd been defeated. There was one event that Ren was completely confident would never occur, and that is his defeat. A strange woman passed him on the streets of Amegakure, and Ren could sense her killing intent immediately. They began a long and drawn out battle, only for Ren to find that none of his genjutsu or soul related techniques had any effect on her. Being that Ren didn't have much under his arsenal aside from those techniques that he believed to make him invincible. And then his death.
