So after reading for a few minutes about the wood, he highlighted the important parts and made a few notes himself. Then he thought that he just as well could start working, so he fetched some paper and began to make a couple of different sketches of good ideas for shields. Most of them were common applying versions like bucklers and tower shields, but some were a little more exciting like a new version of the umbrella. Even though his umbrella sketch intrigued him and made him want to make one of those, he decided that it'd be a lot better to start with a simple version. The most common and therefor a good practice was the medium sized rounded shield that was most used by knights and vikings. There were not anything really advanced about it, so he just measured the length he would need to have it in to cover a proper area and then began.
At first he painted on the diameter of the shield upon the wood with a normal pencil and made sure to press extra hard so it would be easy to see. Emi then used one of his circular saws with a thicker blade to cut out the shape from the wood, which resisted quite surprisingly well. The floor was quickly covered in a thick pile of dust from the wood as he got all the closer to the end of the circle with the saw. When he was almost done the wood began to flicker from the force of the saw, which forced him to attach the wood to the table using a bench clamp and hold the shield with his own hand. That made it a lot easier for him to finish off the sawing, but as he made the final push, the sudden weight made him almost drop the shield. Emi was quite surprised by the sheer weight of the disc, even when cut out it was heavier than most shields.
The book had stated that the material was one the heavy side, but at that point he imagined that he could compare it to iron. But then Emi raised it up and imagined it sitting on his hand, which allowed him to accept it as plausible tool of defense. But before he could know for sure, he had to add on some grips, which was two, one surrounding the lower part of his arm and one that he could hold on to. Emi figured that the one surrounding his forearm just well could be a strip of leather or rope, but later decided to just use leather. That was a material that he rarely had used before, but at that point he had found it all the more versatile. So he cut up a nice black piece from a large sheet and removed all of the hair from it using a really sharp knife.
