Although large parts of the world are in the icy grips of winter, Uzu no Kuni is a notable exception. Located next to a warm gulf stream and located on the ring of fire this small place surrounded by whirlpools is under the heavy blanket of a subtropical climate. The treacherous waters that make access difficult are also what has kept the entire island as a serene getaway for the rich and wealthy, shielding off the eyes of those too poor to reach the verdant green paradise. It is here that the Chuunin Exams Commission opened their subscription office to those Genin who felt eager to take on the challenge. You could not miss it, whether you came from the mainland into the city of Maelstrom or from the ferry, in the latter case you could already see it from the sea, but the Commission had parked one of the largest yachts in the world a kilometer off the port into the sea. It was unlike anything you had ever seen. At least a hundred and fifty meters long it floated on two keels and had a light blue and white hull. Just behind the bridge was the largest and most dominating feature of the entire thing, a large brown structure meant to be a phony volcano. Instead of lava it had a waterfall running from the top past the centre onto the middle of the ship. In a canal this water ran to the back of the ship, where at the stern there was a large deep pool, twenty meters in diameter.
A humble dhow was picking up people from a dock in the maelstrom port. A caucasian man in a black suit, shiny black shoes, a perfect clean shave and short cropped hair was standing on the dock with a clipboard. Every time someone wished to board he would raise the clipboard and grab his ballpoint, asking for the name, village affiliation and village rank. Once the man was sure that those wishing to board were all eligible Genin for the Chuunin Exam the dhow would set off to the yacht. At the stern a floating jetty had been created where the little lateen rigged vessel would dock. The fun would start as soon as you left the dhow and stepped onto the jetty. A suntanned blonde woman in a red bikini would start by putting a necklace of flowers around every guests's neck and pressing a drink in a coconut shell in their hands. She would inform everyone of the amount of hours left (many) until the ship would set off to the actual CE destination and invite you to go to the 'waiting area', which was just up the stairs into the bowels of the ship.
The stairs would lead you straight into the large volcano shaped structure seen outside. Here was a booth that would hand out free swimwear to any who had not brought their own, which was probably everyone. There were lockers with un-stealable impossible locks for everyone and booths for changing clothes, although no one was forced to change if they did not wish to do so. There were showers here and other hygienic facilities. Of course all of these were separated in a gents and ladies section. Beyond the fake volcano that housed these facilities there was the deck. There were several small thatched huts here, each about five meters in diameter. Two containing a jacuzzi but of different temperatures, one contained a massage parlour where four people could be serviced at once and another a bar. The final two contained round sitting areas with a table in the middle that contained a board game, one had checkers the other chess.
Not in the slightest that anyone was restricted to these huts, the sun could be worshipped all over the deck, although palm trees spread over the deck could also be utilized for shadow. There were groups of lounging chairs and loungers everywhere around the canal that ran from the fake volcano, its waterfall and the large swimming pool at the stern of the ship. Men in trunks and women in bikinis walked around the deck, pacing between the bar and the guests with drinks and food. Each of them had clearly been hired for their aesthetic value. That however seemed not to diminish their ability to take the orders and deliver them tout de suite. Finally there was a man in blue swimming trunks with a floral pattern who was located next to the thatched hut with the bar. He had a grill on which he was flipping burgers and other kinds of tasty treats. This too seemed to be part of the free food and drinks deal. Yes, staying here for a few hours did not seem like much of a problem at all.
