[4] Kazekage Tower

"Your sword tells me your name is Isamu Shounin as you say. It says it was crafted along with 4 other blades by a Smith in the capital by the name of Ryu Otari." Isamu was taken aback by this analysis. The powers on display here were completely foreign to the Genin, but then again his years as a shinobi had shown him there was much about the world he did not understand. The blade had been a gift when he began training in Busosen and now he knew it's maker. The Genin filed that information away as he placed the sheath back on his hip. The sand belt split and resealed around the sheath securing it to his side.

"A ninja is only as sharp as his weapon. I am Shiki Senri. Current Kazekage and you interest me. Both you and Shihana are far too talented to remain Genin. I want you both to be ready for the next chuunin exams." Isamu straightened further as the Shiki identified himself as the Kazekage and Isamu's commander and glanced at Shihana. It seemed that both shared the attention of the Kazekage. The Chuunin Exams had long been a goal of Isamu and he was buoyed by the confirmation of his place in the upcoming exams. Every year he was gone from the village he had read the press clippings about the exams. Dutiful articles devoid of any details that might betray the secrets of the village. Isamu had noticed the success of Sunagakure in the last exam and was eager to join their ranks. He had been a Genin for far too long.

Shihana spoke, "Your words are too kind, but you know that I'll take on these exams for you. And it would appear, Isamu, that we may be taking on these exams together. Perhaps going on a mission could teach us more about one another before we must demonstrate our strength in the Chuunin Exams?"

Shihana's suggestion was an excellent one. Isamu bowed respectfully to the Kazekage and then nodded to Shihana with a smile, "It would be an honor to represent the village at the exams. A mission would be an excellent way to begin building our teamwork." Isamu fell quiet to allow Shihana and Shiki to decide what would be done. He had been gone for so long that he had little idea where to start reintegrating to the Village. He only knew that he was eager to start.

"An excellent suggestion." I'd say as I'd quickly start to walk over to the back area of the reception desk. Lin, could you hand me the contractor list please?"

The receptionist would reach into the desk and pull out a small brass key ring with several worn keys hanging on them and would step out of sight behind several rows of filing cabinets.

"I've tried to get a bit more variety in the types of missions we are going on. I've got a few that require some teamwork... Let's see... Do any of These"

Isamu and Shiki agreed that a mission could help build their teamwork, and their Kazekage began to lead them in the right direction and gave them a list to choose from. Shihana looked at the list and scanned her eyes over the missions and their content, impressed with all of the orders that were being made with the Sand Village. While she wanted to choose a mission that would be of interest to her and fall within her repertoire, she also wanted to pick a mission that would help her and Isamu learn as much as possible about one another. While she knew that he was a taijutsu master, and apparently skilled in the art of the sword, she was interested to see to what extent and how his techniques could pair up with hers. He could be a useful ally at the Chuunin Exams.

"This one," Shihana finally said, "Smugglers in the bazaar, huh? We'll see about that. What do you think Isamu?" She pointed at the mission and waited for his response, thinking of her own animal companion and whether Akumu could be of use on these missions now or in the future.

Description: A patrol officer recently caught a small shipment of Saffron being smuggled through the bazaar. While there wasn't much the quality of the product was so pure that it has officials worried. There must be more couriers running the product. Avoid detection and discover more information.

“This one," Shihana finally said, "Smugglers in the bazaar, huh? We'll see about that. What do you think Isamu?" Isamu leaned in to read the mission slip. The genin nodded. His uncle had a small two story antique shop in the bazaar. It could be a useful base of operation. There were other traveling Sadojin merchants there as well who might be willing to cooperate. “My uncle runs the Sandstone Gallery in the middle of the bazaar. He might be a good place to start asking questions.” Isamu’s uncle Shonn was the black sheep of the family. He had been the one who trained Isamu in the little Shadow Genjutsu he knew. Shonn’s attraction to the occult and darker arts had earned him scorn from most of the family, but it also gave him credibility and access to certain circles. Circles that might have information they needed.

If they were going to launch an investigation Isamu needed his equipment, “Shihana I need to get some pieces of equipment. Let’s meet at the Northern entrance in a hour.” Isamu turned now to Shiki and asked, “By your leave sir?”

"Then I'll see you soon," Shihana said to Isamu, and as Shiki dismissed them prepared herself to leave. She grabbed at the few items and headed off away from the tower, no longer waiting now that they had been given their mission.

As Shihana and Isamu reached the exit to the tower Isamu turned to her and said, “I’ll see you soon.” With that parting remark he struck off towards his apartment.

Never had Jomei stepped foot near the palace like structure. Now he was meant go inside. He approached the building slowly, drawing close to its east entrance. He did not draw near due to fear, anxiety, or timidity, no. This was the building with the most militant presence in the village. Thus, he couldn't help but appreciate the building, nevermind the people inside it. As he approached the building he spoke to the guards. He was now 3 feet away fromm the entrance itself, and was much too relaxed to be entering a building of people with such stature. He

"Ahem..... I am Jomei Toujitakumi, a new graduate of this village's academy. May I access the building to speak to our kage?"

He awaited their response.

The ninja would find his path to the tower as he'd expect. As he moved further from the edge of town to the
Kazekage's tower the first thing he would notice is that the civilian foot traffic was starting to dwindle. There was more and more people walking nearby and standing guard wearing the same Sunagakure headband that he had recently earned. He would see several guards all wearing ballistic vests and carrying weapons would standing casually and searching for signs of danger. 

After a few more moments of walking past a checkpoint and showing a guard your headband and ID card, you'd be allowed up towards the kage tower. You'd turn a corner and for the first time in your entire life living in the village, you would get to visit and witness the kage tower up close. A large orange and black obelisc stood jutting out of the sandstone mountains that surrounded it. The rows and rows of reflective windows on the tower made it difficult to see into the building. Long massive modern glass windows covered the front point of the building. The tower a good 8 stories was an impressive sight to see. 

After walking through the courtyard where a massive fountain poured water into an entry garden which was shaded from the heavy sun and teeming with vegetation. Strange stones that seemed to come from out of the country sat in the garden. The foliage and fauna were unfamiliar to you. Plants and stones from a different land and as you approached the temperature would seem to magically shift. The was more humid, colder. The air that of the mountains. 

Finally, you'd enter the building. A sleek building made of polished shiny marble. Aside from the stone and windows the building itself seemed to be almost featureless. Along the room were several historical items, scrolls and documents from different historical dealings and ninja. A painting of several different distinguished ninja stood out on the wall. You didn't know any of them right away, but you recognized one as Lady Amira the kazekage. In front of the area was a secretary, blonde hair and a black dress sitting behind a desk. She'd look at you expectantly.

You'd speak out to her and after a short conversation, she would understand what you were getting to. As she said this she would be handing the ninja a folder filled with papers with directions and instructions. "Congratulations on joining, first thing first take this. Whenever you are done speaking to the kazekage head over to The Tailored Fit. It's the armory on the north keep of the village. Once you have those head to the back of the first floor, take the hallway on your left and follow that past the trophy room. The kazekage's office is back there."

"Thanks. I'll just go then. See ya."

He then proceeded to follow the woman's instructions, going to the first floor(if not already on it)and taking the hallway on his left. He spotted the trophy room and strolled passed it. As he neared the office, he didn't seem to be going any slower. He didn't see the point of being scared or anxious. There was nothing for him to be afraid of. He trusted his kage.

He was now upon the office. He knocked on the door, still showing whatever formality he had left. He then looked to his hand, the folder the woman had given it was still there. He had almost forgotten about it, as if his hands were used to being cramped. Then again it was hard to notice it when in the other he was holding a rather large weapon; his trusty crossbow. He had remembered it had directions and instructions inside, yet he hadn't bothered to open it. Walking to the office just seemed natural. Like he belonged here.

He disregarded that last though. If anyone was fit to be Kazekage, it wasn't him. Even he knew that he was much too arrogant and full of too much hatred for nobles. He would be a tyrant, and his village didn't deserve that.

He stared at the door, awaiting a response.

I heard the footsteps coming from across the hall as they neared the office. Even here in my own office my instincts and reflexes were always tensed to the slightest input. Being genetically altered had its perks when you fought monsters for a living but sometimes you had to deal with minor annoyances. Annoyances like hearing through stones and floors like as if they did not exist compounded with the hearing and scent of a bloodhound. It meant I heard every annoying piece of office gossip that went on in a tower full of secrets. I hated this tower. I understood its importance but its nothing like the thrill of actually doing fieldwork. Still, I had a family and kids I needed to think about, one that was hidden and kept a secret from this world of assassins and death.

As the footsteps got closer I could hear the ninja's heart beating. As he approached the door I could hear the blood flushing through his capillaries. I flipped a switch on my desk to play some light piano music to play over the sound of unappealing noises. The room itself was dimly lit, I could see in low light so normal lighting seemed oversaturated to me. I glanced up from my desk, where I was nose deep in an ancient tomb about a demon I was researching. On my desk were a few occult items, a couple melting tallow candles glowing in an enchanted burnt orange flame. I nearly winced when the knock happened.

"Enter" I'd hear my own voice say gruffly over my desk as I waited to see who this person was. When Jomei opened the door he would see a room dim in lighting but after a few seconds, your eyes would adjust to the lower light. Directly in front of you would be a large redwood desk that spanned several meters. Scrolls and ancient tombs, parchment and vellum all covered the table and several chairs were haphazardly strewn across the different places on the table. Glasses of wine, whiskey and other drinks were left in different stages of drink across the table.

Sitting in the center of the desk was a man you'd know from studying in the academy. Shiki Senri, you didn't know much about him except he wasn't from the village natively. He came here a year ago to serve the Kazekage lady Amira. He is a foreigner, the Jounin Commander of the village. Looking at him you'd notice first off that he wasn't in armor. Wearing a fine white cloak and some casual attire underneath. The cloak seemed unnaturally white, which gave his pale skin some pigment by comparison. Across his right eye was a massive scar that covered down his face left by some clawed beast. Along his side sat a steel katana.

"So..... I'm gonna guess by the fact that a guy like you in an office like this would be the Kage. Cool. I like the work you do for our village. Means a lot, I mean it. Oh yeah, I'm Jomei, Jomei Toujitakumi. Nothing special about me despite my clan's bloodlimit."

He would put down his crossbow to show the man his hands. No mouths. No teeth. Hell, they were even surprisingly smooth. And although he found it ever so slightly difficult to see, he'd figure that even if the man in front of him had the same trouble, the child's complexion was so pale he seemed to glow. He picked up his crossbow.


"But yeah, I just graduated from the academy so I mainly came here to ask you like..... What now? I'm guessing get into a team? Like what?"

Despite being in such a militant village and an even more militant presence, he was surprisingly laid back. He had no cares in the world, no worries of making a bad impression. In his head, he couldn't make a bad impression. Just a Jomei impression.

First impressions count for something."Hmm?  You are mistaken. I'm Shiki Senri, the Joinin Commander of the village. I'm the direct second in command to the village. I'm... Surprised you didn't learn that at the academy." I'd pause for a moment as I watched him fiddle with a crossbow in my office. I'd raise an eyebrow. "Excellent, welcome to the village." I'd say with a hint of genuine appreciation in my voice. "These days things are only getting more and more dangerous and the people who are willing to step up and do something about is honorable." I'd pause for a moment and look over at the ninja eyeing him up. "We don't work off an official team system if you want a team you find a team and collaborate it yourself. If you can't find a squad I'd head over to the mission board and find a good mission you can handle solo. As a Genin you can handle and D or C rank mission you find."

"I see. Not the Kage. Thank you for all of this information. But if you're not the Kage, where can I find them?"

For all Jomei knew, it was just his paranoia. But he got the feeling he was being deceived. Why would a Kage lie anyway? It didn't matter, but he did want to know where to find the commander in chief. Even so, it wasn't his place to second guess the ma- Wait a minute! His place is anywhere he wants to be! He could say whatever he wanted! And if this guy really isn't or really is the Kage, he was going to find out.

"Anyway, before I take my leave and assemble a team that hopefully consists of someone better at deceiving than you are, anything you want to tell me? Something I should know about, sir?"

A complete bluff. But it would not show. He spoke with confidence. He would not back down. It wasn't his way.

Gonna show you how this works.

You are attempting to see through my characters lie. A lie you have no reason to assume but can attempt to uncover nevertheless. This boils down to a skills check. Your character would use their ability "Sense Motive" to determine my characters lie vs my "Acting Skill." Your skills are not honed yet so your current score is a 0 +1d100, mine is like 230+1d100. Now even if I roll terribly and you roll amazing the chance of you seeing through the lie would be almost 0. Now if you rolled a 100 out of 100, or I roll a 0 out of 100 that would be considered a critical success or failure. In which you'd auto win the roll.

Not to overwhelm you so quick of the back but you are attempting to read the lies of a kage right out of the genin academy.

I'd pause for a moment. "The kazekage doesn't handle the daily interactions with the ninja, that task falls to me." I'd smile for a moment as I pointed towards the mission board. "Once you've proven yourself a bit more, I'm sure you will meet the kazekage one day."

Jomei would then walk to the mission board, analyzing it with sincerity. Although he was usually laid back, Jomei did have a very high respect for those above AND BELOW his stature, as long as they have worked hard to get where they were. The outcome didn't matter; the work put into it did.

He stared at the mission board for a few moments. His eyes were barely moving. A fast reader? Stuck on a word? Found what he wanted? .....No, he had just spaced out. When he had returned to reality, he was a little short of breath. A bad memory. He quickly composed himself, disguising his shortness of breath as just a quick, natural cough. 


"Swinging at Giants. S Rank. It doesn't matter if I can handle it. What matters is I want it. And someone will give it to me. You, the Kage, whoever."

A small spark of interest could be seen in my eyes. "I fight monsters for a living son. Let me tell you now, the type of mission you want isn't gonna be found as a genin. If you really want to take on harder missions you need to prove yourself and earn some rank. Genin do D-C rank missions. Chunin and above handle the rest. Do qualify for chunin you're gonna need to knock out 8 missions and learn some things before we send you to the exams." (you need 500 tp)
