Located far out in the outskirts of Sunagakure lies its most haunted and revere ruins. The Hills of Dusk were originally desert ruins which were there long before the village was ever established. Out of respect, the village left this piece of history alone. In the past, some have tried to tear down the area in order to build more space for the village. Those who did were cursed beyond measure and ended their days in screams and nightmares. Thus this area was left in peace and the legends were created.

In the middle of the ruins lies a Tower. It's not a big tower but due to the area, it's imposing nonetheless. It is here where a friend of both spirits and humans lives. Ever since that man started to live here, the light has grown softer and the atmosphere warmer. However, visit at your own peril. For at his command, you will be enlightened of the world beyond...or be struck by the demons of eras past.

Description: Picture Considered to be the "Ultimate" defense through Chakra Manipulation. User holds their hand out, gripping their wrist with the other hand. User slams the hand on the ground, releasing the built up Chakra in a 5 meter radius spread sphere barrier. When released it becomes self sustaining and will disperse depending on the user's Class Level (1 minute per Class Level starting "D" Class) or if the Barrier is destroyed. When first learned the Barrier is able to withstand 100 Points worth of Damage (see Armour System in Item Index). Performing takes the length of a "B" Rank technique in Handseals. User may learn this technique multiple times. Each time learned ("B" Rank Training) the Barrier gains strength of additional 60 Points. Chakra Techniques may not enter, nor may they not leave the Barrier. Only Chakra Techniques causes damage to the Barrier as Non Chakra Techniques pass through with no effort. This includes People, and basic Weapons. User may perform Techniques outside of the Barrier (Example: Sand Jutsu, Water Jutsu) as long as it may start outside of the Barrier. When releasing the sphere, any chakra within the range of the Sphere is pushed out.

Rai was pouring over the books inside his domain, seemingly like ruins but he had cleaned up rather well after himself. All of a sudden, two people suddenly made their presence known about ten meters away from him. Noticing their spiritual energy right away, Rai turned and saw them. It was Nurai and Akai, a spirit medium who had done work like himself and her guardian spirit.

"We got your request."

"Good to see you two. How did you get here? The Village should have been heavily guarded."

"Aha, nothing can keep out a master of spirits. Anyways, we received the results from that previous case that you had. As per our contract, I will teach you the technique you'll need if you want to navigate that part of Hell and still retain your sanity. But know this, it will a long and grueling process. Given your situation, if you do not finish this training, I might as well kill you myself instead of letting you get killed and having a demon possess your body to escape back here. Understand?

Rai nodded. He knew well the risks of traveling through the wild regions of Avici, the lowest level of Naraka. In that place, there was no hope for reincarnation and the miasma of hatred, despair and darkness ran deep. If he could not create a barrier strong enough to reject that, he would be doomed to fall in his rescue mission. Unfortunately he could not back away from this case; it had gotten personal.

"Very well, let's begin. Watch this."

Akai floated off to the top of a bookshelf while Nurai gathered up a great deal of chakra. Surprisingly enough, a technique created by priests had been altered by shinobi to create the technique that Rai needed. As the Uchiha did not have a certain ability yet, it was all he could do but watch what Nurai did externally. Chakra had actually materialized into the palm of Nurai's hand and as he slammed it into the ground, a spherical prism burst forth, its presence reflecting all the light in the library ruins. As Nurai stood up, he explained the effects of this technique.

"When you're able to do it as well as me, if we should ever reach that point, this technique will become self sustaining and you will no longer need to pour any more chakra that you already have. I will tell you now, learning this barrier will not be able of any use to you. You must master it in order to achieve your goals. Keeping up with me so far?"

Rai nodded.

"Now, I understand aside from your childhood Katon ninjutsu, you have no other experience with ninjutsu?"

Rai nodded again.

"Geez and you call yourself a ninja. Alright, we will have to start from the formula. Here, look this over. I'm going to get myself some food. Have this memorized by the time I get back or I'm going to set the dogs on you."

Nurai threw over a scroll to Rai and vanished into thin air along with Akai. He wouldn't be kidding about the dogs since he had tamed several cousins of Cerebrus. As he poured over the scroll, it listed the correct order of tenketsu that his chakra should flow in in order for the technique to come out correctly. As it involved solidifying pure chakra, this made for a complicated sequence of chakra channeling, something Rai was not experienced in since all the ninjutsu he knew was Katon: Goukakyuu no Jutsu. He sat down and started tracing the sequence from the start of all the ninjutsu, the chakra pool in the stomach region.

As he started studying the formula, he memorized it through chunking, or breaking it off into sections. Fortunately, he was picking this up rather fast. He did not want to disappoint his old friend who had come from quite a ways away so he mustered all his effort in learning this technique. The tenketsu traced forth ever upwards, making detours now and then. The only other ninjutsu he knew had been a rather direct path, with only a couple of paths that threw him off when he thought about it. This one was like a maze. Which made sense considering it was supposed to be one of the most advanced ninjutsu there was.

"Talk about going from 0-100 real quick."

Rai had by now broken up the tenketsu path into sections, using light pencil markings on the scroll to mark them off. There were about seven sections, all starting and ending with something that was counter-intuitive to the chakra paths that Rai was used to. This made it memorizing the correct chakra flow a great deal easier. As he studied through the paths, he was quickly picking them up one by one. He noted that Nurai had made it easier for him by highlighting major meridians, checkpoints that Rai would have pass through in order to get the correct order. Knowing the general direction of these checkpoints helped out the detective a great deal whenever he got lost.

Slowly but surely, he engraved the path into his mind. While he did not process the chakra, he was also using his body to learn, using his senses to see from which part of his body would come next during memorization. It was mostly rote memorization since this was just the basics. He smiled. Next, in order to make sure he was getting it right, he took out a cheap and empty scroll. He swiftly traced the human body with his pencil. If he wanted to do it right, he might as well see if he could draw it out himself without looking. The sun was starting to set now, Nurai would be back any moment. There would not be much time left for him to memorize this long sequence. And he did not want his home to have mad dogs of hell running through it.

He did not have time to write out each tenketsu point and meridian out so he initialized them. There were a few times when he had to stop and think about it. The temptation of going back and checking his work was ever so there but he resisted it. This would pay off. The rather long sequence was taking him awhile to get through. And writing along with drawing it out took a much longer time than just reading it to himself. As he sped up, his handwriting started to deteriorate but he did not mind. This was for his own eyes anyway so he did not have to worry about anybody else judging him. Then, as Nurai reappeared in a gust of wind reminiscent of the southern isles, Rai checked off the very last tenketsu points at the hands.

"I'm done."

"Good, I'll be quizzing you then."

Rai was then told to recite the order of the tenketsu points from start to end. There were several times when Nurai interrupted him with a question on another path or sometimes he even asked why it was this way when he knew Rai did not know the answer, just to make him lose his way. But the spirit detective's memory kept faithful to his calls. After fifteen minutes or so of this, Nurai threw him a baked good that he had acquired from wherever he had done with his mastery of Hiraishin. It was one of his favorite goods, a certain type of croissant. Rai gave him a thumbs up.

"After you're done with that, we'll see if you can apply what you learned.

After a short break, Nurai and Rai were sitting next to each other in a cross legged meditative position. Now it was time to see if Rai could successfully apply what he had learned. Rai was expecting this to take awhile. Whenever he picked up something quickly, it was through his body's understanding of how it felt. Knowing the theory inside out and trying to translate that kinesthetically was always a pain to him. Unless the person teaching him happened to know the right words to say. Either way, he just had to try and go for it. Nurai was particularly sensitive to chakra so he would be able to tell if Rai was doing it right just from closing his eyes and focusing on Rai.

"Here I go."

Rai gathered up the necessary amount from his chakra pool and started the path of circulation. He did it slowly, as he had to remember which points to hit and then move the chakra. Since moving one's chakra in a staccato like manner was not conducive and could even be harmful, he did it quite slowly. This resulted in a smooth flow. He took a deep breath. He was concentrating a bit too hard so it was causing unnecessary stress on his mind. He had finished through the first two sections by now. He pushed on. Something on this scale was completely new to him, as he was not used to ninjutsu. Thus if he wanted to get it right, he might as well take it slowly.

"This is going to take awhile, I see. I should probably go get a book since you got so many here."

Rai ignored him and kept his focus on his energy circulation. Nurai meanwhile motioned for Akai to bring him a book. The spirit solidified his hand, a feat that only one who had become a higher being could do, and threw him a random book. Nodding, Nurai laid down on his side and started leafing through the book. Rai had gone through two thirds of the way by now. His body was starting to pick up the translation of thought into action. The process was becoming noticeably easier and more natural to him. Before he knew it, he had finished one full circulation before he knew it and his hands glowed with energy. Rai knew that Nurai did not want him practicing the actual jutsu now so he released the energy back slowly into his system.

"Good, now I want you to change the path a little. Before you hit the meridian that leads to your arms, change it back so it comes around full circle around your heart. Speed it up this time and do 5 full rotations in the time it took you to do the last one."

Rai's inner spirit sighed to itself. If it took him this long to do one, would doing five in the same amount of time be possible? He had to trust in his inner talent. For some reason, people often told him that. He started, this time a great deal swifter than the last time. The time it took from thought to action had been cut down even more so than when he had ended it last time. It also helped that going through it once helped him memorize it with his body.

Now, as he went through his rotations, he kept picking up speed gradually. He appreciated the fact that Nurai was this strict on him, since the faster he was able to access this technique during a battle, the better he would be able to save his skin. The energy circulation gave off a bright glow from Rai's body as he picked up speed. Nurai grinned as he scanned through his second book now. Before long, all five were done and he had finished it in the same amount of time. Taking a deep breath and releasing the chakra slowly out, he looked to Nurai.

"Good job, we'll pick this up again tomorrow."

Early the next morning, after having breakfast and taking care of some minor affairs regarding spirit detective and shinobi work, Rai met up with Nurai again, this time outside his home and out on the terrain of Emym Uial. A few spirits had gathered to watch Rai learn and also because Nurai and Akai had a legendary reputation among spirits. Rai had been told review what he had learned yesterday and this he did the night before as well as this morning before coming out. As it was still the early morning, the land of the desert wind was still cool. As he warmed up and stretched himself, he asked Nurai what they would be doing today.

"Today, I'm going to keep blasting you until you can protect yourself."

"…say what now?"

"I'm giving you until five to prepare yourself. 5…4…3…"

Rai quickly recovered from his surprise. Nurai was not the type to joke about these things, even if he was grinning madly like a prankster would. Swiftly gathering up chakra and circulating it in the right order to his hands, he held his left wrist with his right hand, combining the chakra that he had circulated.

"2…1…0!"

A crimson colored blast fired off from Nurai's hand and came straight at Rai, whose hand was shining brightly from the chakra he had gathered. However, it could serve as a cushion as the blast went through the chakra and hit his hands, knocking them into the air as his whole body flew back from the knockback. He would land on his back from his impact. When he realized he was staring into the blue sky, he groaned. His hands stung a little from the impact. Unbeknownst to him, Nurai had correctly assessed the amount of chakra Rai was able to gather and also the degree of control he had over the chakra. Knowing this, he had shot a blast of his special chakra just a little stronger than Rai was able to handle. Rai did not know this and sat up rubbing the back of his head.

"A little warning would be nice."

"Warnings are for noobs. Get up! Form the chakra into a hexagon. The thicker you make it, the better. Now that you know this, you have 8 seconds this time. And I'm not counting out loud."

Rai flipped himself off the ground. Taking the hint from Nurai, he swiftly circulated his chakra into his hands. This part was no longer being a problem. It would still take a little while before it became second nature to the spirit detective but it was getting easy. After his hands were shining with the amount of chakra they held, Rai tried molding it. He visualized a hexagon in his mind and tried to twist the chakra into the shape that he wanted. His hands twisted along with his mind as he focused the energy into a fist. Then as Nurai fired off another shot, he opened his hand. A blurry and rough around the edges hexagon formed. However, as Rai didn't know again, Nurai had accounted for Rai's understanding and strengthened his shot with a little adjustment once more.

Rai was sent flying once more. As he landed on his back, he flipped up swiftly, rebounding rather gracefully. The knockback still had him skidding back a bit on his feet. With this shot, the talent within his blood made him realize that Nurai was adjusting his shots accordingly to Rai's progress. While he did not let it show on his face, Nurai was too perceptive to not notice it. He grinned as he raised his hands again for another shot. Rai sighed to himself. If this would be what they were doing all day, then he would have to gather himself and prepare for the long haul. He raised his hands filled with protective chakra once more.

Off he flew into the distance again. Nurai was ruthless. His philosophy was that true success awaits only after the necessary hard work. Unfortunately for Rai, his definition of hard work was unrelenting. Rai gathered up his chakra once he was on his feet again. Nurai was silent, no longer giving out warnings as to when the attacks would come. And when they did, they were too fast for Rai to see. If Nurai had been aiming anywhere else, he would not been able to block it. With nothing else in his mind, he could only focus on creating a stronger and more defined hexagon of chakra to defend himself with.

This time around though, the shape of his miniature shield was visibly better than before. It was still a little rough around the edges but he took it as is. There was no longer time as he expected Nurai to fire off another shot. But that shot was not coming. Puzzled, the detective looked at his trainer. He had been focusing on himself so he had not seen to see if Nurai was doing anything special. A crimson glow around the size of a basketball was in his hand, which was the biggest of any that he had fired so far. But he was not letting it go. The legend of a man was also grinning. After a minute of holding up his tiny Tenkai, he realized what his friend was up to.

Now it's a matter of stamina? Great…

Rai kept it up as long as he could. Each second seemed to grow longer as he continuously poured in his chakra to maintain the shape of the shield. He gritted his teeth and stood his ground as beads of sweat would drop down from the edges of his face. The sun had come up now and the temperature was rising rapidly in this desert land. He paced himself with his breaths. But before long, his arms would give out and the chakra shield dissipated into the desert heat. And of course, this was just what Nurai was waiting for. Rai had already braced himself for it.

This time, Rai was sent tumbling into the distance. It had caused no real damage since it was more for the knockback than for power. Still, this had been the strongest impact yet. Nurai leaned over Rai who was staring at the sky thinking about how to balance between power and stability. He motioned for him to get up.

"We'll start something new now and get back to this later. Get up."

Rai followed him back inside. Back in the library ruins, Nurai had set up two pyramid like artifacts. He shot them with something and they began to move. What looked like chakra started to spin around and around, like a drill. Nurai then jumped up and with one finger, focused his chakra into that finger, forming a spherical barrier. It looked like it was made of diamonds. Such as Nurai's mastery of Tenkai that he could form a tiny one. Rai could not see them but he had a feeling that it was hexagons that made up the sphere. Otherwise, why would he have told Rai to focus on that shape? It seemed effortless to him but Rai knew better. This would be far harder than Nurai was making it look. He took a deep breath and started to gather his chakra.

He formed the hexagon as he flipped onto the chakra spike, which immediately started to decimate his defense. Surprised by how much power it had, Rai fell over. Nurai laughed at this and motioned for his friend to get up and try again quickly. Calming down and focusing once more, Rai knew that he would need a lot power this time, even if he was trying to be efficient with the size of the technique. Activating it once, he flipped onto the artifact, where he would try his best to maintain his practice Tenkai. This time, his chakra did not get blown away immediately like it did last time. Now it was a test of time…

"One major thing you should focus on is simply just remaking it if your Tenkai loses form instead of pouring in chakra trying to keep it up. You'll wear yourself out less. That being said, you're still going to wear yourself out ragged so choose your poison."

Rai listened to this advice as he was struggling to keep this up. He was using his whole hand to do with, having create a spherical Tenkai like Nurai, about the size of his full palm length. He pushed down on it to throw himself up into the air, giving him a second or two to recreate another one since the previous one was collapsing due to the continual damage it had taken from the chakra drill. It had disintegrated by the time Rai had come down with the new Tenkai. The drill seemed like an endless vortex. Rai looked over. Nurai was having no problem with his. He even yawned just now, which was frustrating to see.

This was draining Rai out more than the last one, especially since this one was physical too. At least for that, he could alleviate the soreness through switching arms. However, his chakra reserves were being rapidly depleted. He had a feeling that he was not being as efficient with his chakra as he could be. It certainly did not help that he was growing increasingly tired by the second. Still he did not complain. He had to remember why he was doing this, to rescue an innocent person who had been condemned to aeons of burning punishment wrongly. Who knew that even gods could mess up? With renewed drive, he pushed on and got ready to create a new sphere.

"Ok, that's enough for now! I'm hungry so go get us some lunch. Oh and I want bubble tea, taro flavored. Now git."

Without knowing it, lunchtime had come around. His body crying for a break, Rai was relieved to take a break. He knew it would not be much time but he had to recover as much as he could. Fortunately, he knew a guy who could see spirits and that owed him. He sent a friendly spirit to put down a delivery order for two bento lunch boxes. After taking a big gulp of water, he passed out him in the cool shade in the shadow of his home outside. Since his place was a little out of the way, it took the restaurant about forty minutes to arrive. Waking up a little refreshed, he was glad at the prospect of having some good food.

After the meal, Nurai and Rai discussed a little behind the history of the technique and the uses that Nurai had seen it been used for. While Rai was not actively training in it, it certainly helped that he had a break and was able to explore the more theoretical aspects of the technique. Any piece of information would help when learning a technique as complex as this. Then they got back up to start the practical session of training. Rai had recovered a bit but not enough to feel confident.

Life is about living outside your comfort zone after all.

Fortunately, this was not the same thing that they were doing before lunch. Instead, it looked like they were going end the training today with the very same exercise they had started out the day with. Rai braced himself for the bruises and the hurt that was sure to come along. His chakra flowing to his hands naturally now, Rai formed a hexagon shaped Tenkai to take on Nurai's latest blow. It was the same basketball sized blast as before. But this time, there was no waiting. The blast came true and swift to meet Rai's Tenkai. The Tenkai would be blown away by the force of the attack but Rai did not go flying back. Granted, he did fall back onto the ground but he had not moved that far from his position. Already they were seeing progress. Rai smiled as Nurai prepared the next one.

Unfortunately for Rai, his trainer had seen that smile and sent a big one that packed quite the wallop. Given the size of it, which was about the size of his body, Rai's instincts took over and he evaded it. But then it separated into four and one of them headed his way. This time he was more fortunate since he had already had his Tenkai chakra built up so when he unleashed it, it was able to successfully block the scatter shot. There was still some knockback but when he landed on his feet, his hands still had a partial Tenkai formed. Now he was definitely making progress compared to before, more so than he had expected. Was it because he had been pushing his limits before?

"We're moving this up a level. Try to keep up."

With that was the only warning, Nurai raised his palm once more. However what was forming this time was not just one sphere of energy ready to blow Rai away but two of them. They were lined up right next to each other and at a fairly large size. The detective knew he would be able to block one but dealing with two of them was another story. Expecting to get blown away, he braced himself for impact. The left one fired off first and the right very shortly after so that as they were reaching Rai, they were lining up with one right behind the other. There would be no time to reconstruct another Tenkai to deal with the second. He would just have to make do with what he had now. Tensing up, he readied himself. Nurai had especially made the speed of these ones visible just to him to see.

So off Rai went, his Tenkai holding up against the first blast but when the second one came around, it cracked and crumbled until nothing was left but Rai's scorching hands as he tumbled back and landed face first in the sand. Shaking his head as he spat out the sand that got into his mouth, he coughed a little. The last one, in his opinion, had packed more power than the last one. After a few more of those with no real improvement on Rai's end due to his lack of chakra, the sun started to set. Nurai was stretching and Rai knew that the training for today had come to an end. Both of them were fairly busy people so he knew to finish taking care of some business tonight so he would have the time to train tomorrow. Also, he probably would not have been able to last much longer. The two bid each other farewell for the day.

The next morning, they were up and at it early in the AM. After some warmup and chakra meditation, they were on both on top of the chakra drill once more. With the practice of making miniature Tenkais and the core shape, a hexagon, Rai's chakra control was starting to improve. He smiled at the thought. However that smile did not last that long as his body started to remember why this drill, no pun intended, was so difficult. After a little while, he started to breathe hard from the continuous molding of the Tenkai technique. He paced himself. By now, he knew how long each Tenkai would last against the current speed and intensity of the chakra drill. Of course, each time, he tried to mold a stronger and stronger one with the same amount of chakra as last time.

Slowly but surely, with each one, the spheres of the Tenkai shined more and more brightly. The chakra was solidifying more and more and thus light was reflecting better off of it. Nurai noticed this out the corner of his eye and nodded approvingly though Rai did not notice. The detective had gritted his teeth and kept trying to push his limits of chakra control. He kept his breath control up, continuously struggling to find a balance between tension and relaxation. The clock slowly worn on. All Rai could think about was progress and his eventual mastery, as while his improvement helped, it did not change the fact the strain on his body and chakra system was torturous. Nurai meanwhile had continuously monitored his friend's progress and current chakra levels.

"Alright, lunch break. Get me something different than yesterday."

As they were finishing up lunch and moving back to talking about the more intricate points of their training, Rai was catching his breath. He felt some of his chakra come back but the amount was not worth noting. While he was doing so, Nurai was giving him feedback. He was doing a good job so far. It would not be much longer now since they had passed the halfway point. However Rai was warned that from this point on, the training would only get more and more demanding. What seemed like a basic repetition of drills was over. The foundation had been set. Now they had to start building on it and that meant an uphill battle for the spirit detective.

As he got back on the Tenkai stamina training, he was advised to create as small and efficient a Tenkai as he could possible manage. Rai was not told this but this was also so he could last the rest of the day's training. He grunted a yes as he held on and when he had to create a new one, he did make it smaller. His creations were still just as durable. The pace got better for the genin as the day wore on. It was a combination of the break and Nurai's directives that made doing this easier. It also helped that Rai's increasing proficiency in this technique was ever inching towards the next stage that Nurai was waiting for him to hit. He had expected to reach that stage tomorrow but at this rate, Rai might be able to the test the waters a bit before the sun set today. Soon enough, the waiting was over.

"Now we're moving into the advanced stages. I made you save at least some chakra for this. I hope you're ready to burn it all out now."

As the two of them went outside once more, the sky was beginning to fade from blue to blood-orange. This time around, things would be a little different. Nurai was standing fairly close to Rai, only about a spear's length's away. As the spirit detective was catching his breath, he knew he had jumped from a harsh training drill into an even harsher one. This time, he had to create the largest Tenkai he could, covering as much of his body as possible. Nurai demonstrated what he expected out of the training this time around. It consisted of him raising his palm away from the two of them and what seemed like a large wall blasted out of his hand and left the sand outlining the size of it in its wake. So Rai was supposed to block something like that? He knew there was no point in questioning it and so he prepared his chakra. He molded it and molded it, visualizing what he wanted in his head.

"Here goes nothing."

As the palm of doom was raised, Rai's chakra would burst forth. A complete shield it would not be, as it would only cover roughly 20% of his body. It seemed more like a full arm shield. Still, as Nurai would tell him later, that was a better first attempt that was expected. The shield would shatter into pieces with the onslaught of Nurai's blast. And as such, Rai's body was left smoking in the sand afterwards. He groaned as he got back up slowly. This time, he was not left the liberty of taking his time. Nurai had tugged Rai's body back to where it had been. "Again." And he slapped Rai back to get him to focus. Rai shook off some of the sand that was still stuck on his face. He gritted his teeth as he nodded and raised his arms once more. As he gathered his chakra, he decided he might as well go all out this time, given that he did not have much anymore so he might as well end it with a bang.

Nurai could sense this so he was also prepared to adjust his attack for the increase in resolve that Rai was going to put into this one final Tenkai. The spirit detective summoned the last of his chakra and slammed his hands together before opening his palm. At the same time, the light from Nurai's energy began to emerge. A bigger shield emerged this time. This time, it was able to cover around a third of Rai's front. Fortunately, that was also where Nurai's hand was so Rai's lower body was not instantly blown away. However it seemed that Nurai had decreased the power but made up for that in a continual wave of power. Due to the desert sands, Rai was slowly getting pushed back from the bad footing.
