I had only been in Kaminari no Kuni a few days, and had not yet acclimatized very well. The chill still bit through my dress and shirt, grasping my flesh with icy, unpleasant fingers. Thus far I did not like this place, but there was still a certain allure at the prospect of hunting in a different environment, spreading my trail of slaughter all over the map. However, were I to do so, I may need to pick up more insulating clothes in the near future. Unbeknownst to myself, I was very close to the southern border still. I had only a continental map, and thus discerning my exact location was a difficulty. I had had to sleep in heated inns or at least beneath the shelter of an abandoned roof on my travels since the day I docked here, unlike in Hi no Kuni where I could sleep under the stars to zero discomfort. I had not killed anyone yet, either. I felt it needed to be somehow... special. The first time I had slaughtered another human being in Hi no Kuni it had been my mother, which set the bar rather impossibly high, but I could at least make it a more ceremonious affair than the slitting of a throat in a back alley, an opportunity I had been presented with and privately chosen to decline. With me I carried my travel bag, which stored miscellaneous rations, clothing, ten grenades, my personal holodisk and my compass; the map that I usually stored within it was held out before me. At my left hip dangled my two swords, strapped to my waist by way of belt; one, a longsword, held within its scabbard, and t'other a saber, sitting merely looped. At my right hip was a pouch full of throwing weaponry, including a hundred and sixty five senbon, sixty shuriken, nineteen exploding tags and a trio of kunai. Veiled beneath my dress was a sextuple knife holster, equipped at my right thigh, containing ten knives. I was a walking arsenal, if only my twin blades were apparent to an onlooker. The small path I was following opened out onto a wider road, presently; I glanced at my map curiously, wondering if this was the main road leading from Shimo no Kuni. Hilariously, in Hi no Kuni I had never felt lost, even while wandering without direction, but here in this austere and unforgiving landscape I felt as though I needed to be anchored to some definiteness, lest I lose myself and freeze to death under some rock. It was slightly worrying. When I turned southwest, I found a human being within my sights, a pulsating, warm sac of flesh amid this bitter cold. The presence of it would not bring me the same sanctuary I expected normative humans gained from one another, but it would be sanctuary of a sort... Oh yes... "Excuse me, boy!" I hailed him from my roadside locale, summoning a companionable smile and waving in enthusiastic, relievéd greeting. Despite the fact that I was already feeling internal hungers begin to bubble within, I kept my sclera an innocuous white, controlling the chaos. "I seem to be lost! Would you care to help me?" The simplest, most enticing, effective lure for human beings, I had long ago learned, was a state of distress. They could ne'er resist the opportunity to help one of their 'fellows'! | ◀ MADE BY ★MEULK OF GS |
