Wet—What was this odd sensation that smeared his face?
Mizuyume opened his eyes slowly to meet with the tongue of his lion partner and best friend, Suimon. He grinned slyly and reached up with both arms, grabbing a hold of the lion’s neck and tackling him down. Though Suimon was physically more built, he enjoyed wrestling with his master, who was slowly gaining strength from daily rigorous training. Tabata sat on Suimon’s stomach and pinned his left, stronger paw with both of his hands, though he met with a quick right backpaw to the jaw. Mizuyume narrowed his eyes and stood up, realizing his companion was hungry just by looking at his facial expression. He shrugged, jabbing his hand into his pack and grabbing the item he sought.
“All right boy…open wide.”
Mizuyume whipped his wrist in his partner’s direction, sending a large steak flying into his open jaws. He reached his hand out and rested it on Suimon’s soft, red mane, scratching behind his ears. The loyal lion licked his master’s fingers, though not simply out of adoration, as the steak’s smell still lingered there. Tabata withdrew his hand and folded his arms, tapping his foot against his windmill shuriken, which laid on the ground.
“Well, today I’m going to be learning a new jutsu. I’ll teach you something later.”
Suimon nodded slowly, sitting down beside the river with a thump, a result of his size. Mizuyume curled his hands and brought them eye level, forming the ‘Rat’ hand seal. He made sure he was standing a good distance from the river, his feet shoulder width apart. Closing his eyes, he focused his chakra outward toward the river, something he had done before when creating Water Clones. Slowly, a ball of water rose up, wobbling from the user’s lack of experience and skill.
“As the heavy support for a team, healing, transportation, tactics, and defense are needed.”
Mizuyume repeated this to himself, deciding a few days earlier that should he join a team, he will support and defend with all his might. If he could not heal, at least he could work on the other three, transportation of his team being the first. His heart skipped a beat from the strain of supporting the ball of water. Tabata forced himself to hold the ‘Rat’ seal steady, imagining the ‘Liquid Bird’ in his mind. Water droplets shakily levitated up to the ball of water, fusing with the larger object to make for a larger bird.
Losing control, he released his seal and the large sphere fell back into the river. Suimon tilted his head to the left while looking at his master, not understanding fully what he was doing. Mizuyume closed his eyes once more, focusing his chakra to his feet, causing a light blue glow. When he assumed it was enough to proceed, he stepped onto the river slowly, beginning to take wider, more confident steps later.
Tabata curled his hands and brought them together once more, keeping his eyes closed while imagining the liquid bird. Once more, water rose from the river a few feet in front of him, forming together into a large sphere. Ready for the mental strain, Mizuyume held his hands steady, focusing on one side of the sphere. A thin, rectangular slab of water began to jut out from the right side of the ball, beginning to split into four equal sections. Mizuyume began to tremble, focusing all he had on the tail, and extending it further, inch by inch. Sweat poured down his brow as he attempted to utilize his second elemental release, Wind, which would then animate the bird.
Releasing his chakra outward, he infused it with the sphere containing one, large tail. The tail raised itself up, then down once, before Mizuyume released his hand seal and watched it fall back into the river.
“I need a lot of work…”
Tabata looked over his shoulder to the bank, where Suimon was already sleeping. Smiling, Mizuyume looked back to the river and held his hands together in the ‘Rat’ symbol, closing his eyes to focus. The same, large sphere from previous attempts rose up from the water, though a bit less shaky. Tabata exerted his chakra outward, manipulating the right side of the sphere to produce the same fan like tail. Without infusing wind chakra, he first focused on the underbelly of the sphere, imagining and concentrating on the two legs of a bird. Two sets of claws, a thumb and three index on each came from under the sphere, pointing downward.
Mizuyume bended forward, forcing the legs to protrude further and become less chubby, thinning them out as they almost reached the river. Use of his chakra straining his body, he concentrated on channeling the chakra to the bird’s feet, allowing it to stand up on the water instead of fusing itself back on it.
Tabata released his seal and lost control of his balance on the water, falling instantly in. The liquid bird dissipated and fell in as well. Mizuyume planted his feet onto the river ground, as he was not far away from the bank, staring at the sky.
“I suppose it’s a start.”
He waded back to the edge of the river, supporting himself with both hands and pulling his exhausted form back onto the mud. Reaching over, he hugged Suimon around the neck with both arms, resting his head against his companion’s mane. Enough was enough for that day, tomorrow he would learn the jutsu for sure.
Fog—A frequent sight to see in the land of Mist. Mizuyume folded his arms as he leaned against his sleeping pet, staring up at the sky. The sun was not fully out, and visibility was at its minimum. Judging from the temperature and the lack of sunlight, he assumed it was around five in the morning, though he couldn’t be sure.
Supporting himself up into a standing position, he noticed his foot hurt considerably from the previous day’s training. Nonetheless, Mizuyume closed his eyes, concentrating his chakra and allowing it to flow to his feet, which formed the light blue aura. He strode out onto the river, taking each step clumsily to the middle while rubbing his eyes with his left glove.
Tabata curled his fingers into his palms and brought them together in the ‘Rat’ symbol, imagining the liquid bird once more.
“水遁。。。リッコドの鳥” (Water Element…Liquid Bird)
Water from the river rose up, but this time starting from the base of the bird, instead of forming a sphere first. Mizuyume fought off his fatigue, focusing on the claws, legs, middle body, and tail of the liquid bird. He moved his hands forward, attempting to relax while the legs had fully formed, the middle diverging from it’s round form to become longer, and more birdlike. The tail that protruded from the side arrived at a more rapid pace, its form pointing upward and fanning out into four different sections. Drenched in sweat and mud, Mizuyume concentrated harder, forming a sphere like head without a beak, crown, or eyes.
Now came the hard part, using a wind release to animate the bird, incomplete as it was. Focusing on the bird, he slowly infused the wind element into the inanimate object, allowing it to walk a few paces, his tail raising and lowering, and his neck able to twist about. A sudden thirst overwhelmed Tabata, causing him to cough a few times, releasing the hand seal, thus dissipating the bird.
Turning around, he could see Suimon waking up, getting up on all fours and staring at his master. Mizuyume walked back slowly, stumbling upon reaching the shore and falling to the ground. Suimon trotted silently toward Tabata, using his nose to poke at the boy’s cheek, wondering what the cause of his fatigue was.
