Character Depth
Personality:
As you might expect from someone who grew up with her feet halfway in civilisation, Ranako lacks social graces. She can be blunt and coy all at the wrong times, and she has little idea whether whatever she's doing in the moment is right or wrong until she gets a rise out of someone.
The uncertainty of her life has made Ran slightly neurotic over the years. What order she can't have in everyday situations she likes to have over herself, generating large amounts of anxiety. Her nervous habits include fidgeting, stammering and, most prominently, repeating her words. She can be hyper-observant of her surroundings, as well. Altogether, on first impression Ran seems blunt and clueless, but not unkind.
Her social isolation hasn't been all anxiety and victimhood, though. The lack of social contact in her early years manifests with a strong lack of empathy. She's able to easily categorise those around her as ‘other’ to herself, and though she doesn’t go out of her way to hurt others, she finds little problem with cruelty, especially if she has incentive to do so. You could call her a bit of a sociopath. This, along with her affinity for manipulating chakra, and good marksmanship, made her a prime candidate for shinobi academy, and made the transition from hermit to student that much easier. Despite numerous difficulties, she's pretty quick at picking up cues on what she should do and when, and was able to integrate pretty quickly into shinobi society for someone of her... condition.
In terms of hobbies, Ran has a penchant for macabre books and stories. Anything dark and gritty can catch her interest, and anything even remotely fluffy will probably not get more than an interested nod. Her favourite books litter her house, and she's read them all six or seven times. Ran's other hobby is seeing new breeds of animal. Wild, wacky or unfamiliar summons can easily draw her in.
Appearance:
Short and scrawny Froggy Mcgee isn’t the first person you’d think would be a ninja. She has a short, thin, stature; pale skin; long, grey hair and, most prominently; two large, dark dots in the corners of her mouth that closely resemble a frog's poison sacs- a side effect of her mother's experiment. Her eyes are dark, lined with makeup and easily express her mood.
She has, quite promininently, two large, dark dots in the corner of her mouth that closely resemble a frog's poison sacs- a side effect of her mother's experiment that appeared when she was eleven. The experiment has resulted in very few results other physical side-effects, so the idea is that effects are still emerging. Otherwise, her features can be slightly frog-like, with a small button nose, thin lips and large eyes. When most people see her, they usually either thing 'cute' or 'toad'. Or both, if that's their thing.
Her hair is straight to a T, and goes down mid-back. On missions, where it would very obviously get in the way, it's usually pulled into a bun so tight it's hard to distinguish head from hair. The colour, grey-ish white, is genetic, rather than a result of her experiment, and most likely comes from mystery dad.
The most prominent part of her outfit is her yellow-orange hat, due to it's large, bright and glaring nature. Shaped like a large, stereotypical witch's hat, it has two frog-like eyes (complete with horizontal slits), a small nose and long, thin mouth, with two sacs on the side, similar to Ran's own. Despite it's intricate detail, it's made of a light cloth and is easy to carry around. When she's not using it, it's often stored somewhere on her person.
Her fashion sense tends toward the grotesque. Her main colours and black, grey and the occasional white, with little else, mostly to accentuate her signature hat. On days off of work, she usually wears simple, dark dresses or skirts and boots or sandals. Her usual mission outfit consists of black, functional sandals, blue-grey tunic, short, black trousers and, covering it all, a long grey cloak that holds most of her equipment. On missions she looks like little more than a cloak and a hat. On more covert missions, she may even forgo the hat. She has a liking for the eccentric accessories like eyeball earrings or bloody gloves.
Background:
Ranako spent her childhood surrounded by frogs and her mother. But mostly by frogs.
Her mother, Kiku, was the kind of person who would name her child ‘Frog Girl’ unironically. She was a jutsu researcher known for being talented and fickle. In the midst of her career, she stumbled upon a way to merge people with animals, using a rare and frowned-upon jutsu. She kept the details of it to herself, smartly enough, but when she and a mystery man had a child, she retired into the swamp lands and decided that the social experiment that would be her legacy would be successfully raising her own feral child.
When Ranako was born, Kiku performed a complex, magical and exceedingly slimy ritual to imbue frog qualities in the newborn. Ranako was raised far away from anything civilian or synthetic, with strategic outings into society to help her cope with her eventual reintroduction, and living on nature and whatever rarities her mother would produce from the village. From the time she could talk, Ranako was bombarded with lectures of ‘living wholesomely'. She spent most of her time around animals, reading her mother-mandated books, and keeping her own company. For the first 5 years of her life, Kiku was ravenous; Ran would have little outside contact, food and medicine would be that produced in the area.
As Kiku’s interest in her experiment waned, Ran found the house slowly being populated with foreign books and scrolls. Ran took up with aplomb. At 11, she found a scroll she couldn’t quite understand in a language impossible to decipher. If her mother noticed it missing, she didn’t seem to care, so Ranako held onto it- whatever it was- for sometime when she could read it.
When 10 year old, pre-pubescent Ran started moulding chakra, Kiku decided that she’d prefer a decent second paycheck to a lengthy social experiment, and enrolled Kiku into the Academy. Graduating was a slow, stilted process, mainly because of social issues; constantly falling out with her peers and teachers, but at 13 she finally graduated.
