Aoki landed on sandled feet on the damp stone of the alley, Oe landing a half-step behind him. Rain clouds loomed over the village, but had yet to open to release their heavy contents; this dreary setting, coupled with the massive buildings scattered across the land, left much of it covered in shadows. It was in one of these darkened areas, an alley adjacent to the smithy of Master Subeta, their employer for this particular mission. Any who walked by would find it difficult to see the pair, who were both wearing black clothing, which was perfect for what they were about to do.
"You about ready?" Aoki said, looking at his brother from beneath the curved brim of his amagasa. Being the host twin, he carried all the weapons, which were stored in the pouches sewn on the inside of his cloak, black in color, that he wore tied to his neck; his headband he wore strapped to his right bicep. Oe wore his headband as well, though he wore his like a necklace, the neck of his black shirt hiding it largely from view.
"Almost," Oe replied softly as he took a look at the smithy. Aoki knew he was analyzing the situation in advance, so Aoki didn't rush him; they had over two hours left anyway, but it was better if they united now; questions would be asked if two genin went out the gates and one came back, or vice versa. Plus, Oe often had sound things to say, despite all his quirks; he only had to listen. "You'll want to ask Master Subeta to wrap this sword up," Oe said, finally. As much as he'll consider it too beautiful to hide away, we're still not skilled enough to defend ourselves should thieves attack us for a masterwork sword. We can show it off once we're in the grass country."
"We? We'll have to see whether you come out once we're there. Don't want the unwanted attention"
Oe ignored Aoki's statement, maybe didn't even hear it. "Also, I'd suggest keeping your headband out of sight as well, especially once we're in the Grass country. We're just a swordsman's apprentice sent to deliver one of our master's finished products."
Aoki saw the logic in both statements, though he'd hate to admit that they weren't combat ready yet. It would definitely be something they would address upon their return to the village. He took a look at the smithy himself, before throwing the cloak open. "Let's get going then, my fellow apprentice."
Oe looked at his brother, and Aoki was uncertain because of the shadows, but he thought he saw the hint of a smile across his brother's stretched visage. Then, without a word, he steps close to Aoki, sliding within the fold of the cloak. The twins began to channel their chakra simultaneously, having done this technique a hundred times before, matching their cells to one another until they were fit to unite. Oe pressed his body closer, until he had no body, as the cells were absorbed into Aoki's own. Only Oe's head remained, hanging limp in the center of his shoulder blades, his twin resting once more. Aoki readjusted the cloak, which was there to cover Oe from sight. It left an awkward hump in his back, but better that than the stares he'd receive if they saw him uncloaked.
Aoki alone stepped out of the alley, lifting his umbrella up, parasol open, to shield him from the first drops of raining falling from the clouds above. He crossed the open street, drawing up to the smithy doors. One, two, three knocks announced his presence, followed by a gravely voice calling out "Door's open." Aoki shook what few droplets off that had already accumulated before stepping inside to meet Master Subeta.
The swordsmith was a burly man, standing over six feet tall with an unkempt salt-and-pepper beard and corded muscles along his arms and chest. He was hammering a hot sheet of metal when Aoki closed the door behind him which he proceeded to drop into a barrel of water with a sharp sizzle. "You the ninja I requested?" Aoki nodded, seeing little need to reply verbally; Subeta simply acknowledged him with a grunt, continuing the trend of curt exchanges. "Come here and take a look at the sword, boy."
Aoki let the roughness of the man's character wash over him as he stepped to the center of the room to admire the blade he'd be carrying, albeit for a short time, laying on the table. It was a long sword, double-edged, with a gleaming steel pommel and a purple gemstone unknown to the twin acting as the hilt. The scabbard was of expert tooling and high-grade leather, and when Subeta pulled six inches of the blade free, Aoki saw the light rippling in the folds of the metal. A true masterpiece it was and, for a time, it would be Aoki's.
Oe's words rang in his head as he looked at it, though. "Its truly beautiful, sir, but I have a request that I hope you'd oblige to. . ."
When Aoki stepped out into the drizzling rain again, it was with the sword strapped to his right hip wrapped in waterproof paper that was similar to the paper on his oil umbrella; despite Oe's warning, Subeta had saw the sense in hiding the sword away from prying eyes. So the pair had proceeded to wrap it in the paper, leaving the strap of the scabbard free so he could still wear it, all the while discussing the logistics to the mission. Master Subeta's brother, Oyama, lived in Aokusa, the Grass Country's capital. Like Subeta himself, he was well known in the capital as he was one of the smiths who armed the Daiymo's troops for war, so it wouldn't be but so difficult to find his shop once there. With that, they had simple small talk, mostly consisting of Subeta abashing him for his choice of weaponry--"can't kill anyone with no umbrella"-- with Aoki having little to say in return.
Needless to say, Aoki was eager to be on his way, his feet splashing in the new puddles as he ran to the Village gate, sword banging against his hip while he held his umbrella in his left hand.
