Tanken pinched the bridge of his nose as he tried to think. This was supposed to be his day off. But alas, it was not to be. His brother, Uyamai, had come home in tears and looking like he had been mugged. The 8-year-old refused to say exactly what had happened, but seeing as he'd just been accepted to Suna's academy, Tanken figured this was the result of some off-campus sparring gone wrong.
And, whatever had happened, boy had it gone wrong. Uyamai sported several large cuts and bruises, not to mention a few puncture wounds that looked like they came from senbon needles. In any case, the boy sat sniffling in the bathroom that the two brothers shared with their, sister, Fuji.
After a moment of thought, Tanken opened his eyes and heaved a sigh. “All right, stay here. I’ll be right back, and I’ll see if I can’t patch you up.” He ran out of the bathroom, leaving his sniffling brother behind as he raced to the small bookshelf he used to keep his sparse collection of texts. His target was easy to find – a leather-bound textbook called First Aid: Healing for the Curious. It was no secret that Tanken wanted to become a great healer one day, and so the book was the first one he had bought when he’d saved up enough Ryo.
Snatching it up, he started sifting through the pages as he raced back to the bathroom. Setting the book down near the sink, he gave Uyamai another good look. The skin around his eyes was black and blue and swollen. Taking a breath, Tanken nodded, then flipped to the start of the chapter on bruising. When he found the segment on black eyes, he immediately read through the potential signs of larger problems. The big one was finding blood in the whites of the eye or the irises. If there was any sign of bleeding, he would need to take Uyamai to a medical specialist immediately.
Fortunately, a thorough exam revealed nothing of the sort, which earned a sigh of relief from Tanken. Neither was there a nosebleed, which the book said could be a sign of a skull fracture. ‘Well, father always said the three of us could be hard-headed,’ Tanken thought to himself. After reading the next few signs of larger problems, he held up two fingers about half a meter away from Uyamai’s face. “How many fingers am I holding up? Can you see them all right?”
His little brother sniffled again, but managed a nod. “Two.”
Tanken nodded. “And you can see them clearly? No blurriness?” Uyamai shook his head, and Tanken tried to grin reassuringly. “Great, then it’s just a regular pair of black eyes.”
Uyamai’s grimaced, which just seemed to pain him some more. "C-Can you fix it?"
Tanken shrugged as he skimmed through another page. "Time is going to have to fix it," he said. "It's not like I know the Healing Hands technique. Yet." His eyes finally spotted his target a moment later, and he breathed a sigh of relief. “But, I think we can speed time along. The first thing I need is a cold compress. I’ll be back soon.”
While the Hidden Sand Village wasn’t exactly known for its chilly weather and abundant water, it still didn’t take a miracle to get some ice. Racing down to his family’s freezer, he snatched up enough cubes to fill up two cloths, then scurried back upstairs. Uyamai was sitting where he had left him – on the toilet with the lid down to provide at least some comfort. Smiling, Tanken reached out with both small bundles. “Here, take these and gently press them just under your eyes. Not on your eyeballs, but on the skin under them. Don’t hurt yourself, just put a bit of pressure on them.”
Uyamai did as he was told, wincing at the initial contact, but relaxing soon after. Meanwhile, Tanken read through the next segment of the chapter, gathering the relevant information in his head. “Good, now keep them on there for 20 minutes. Then we’ll take the ice off for a bit, then put it back on.”
Uyamai nodded, and Tanken sighed quietly as he started flipping toward the next chapter. There was still work to do, and plenty of it. Several cuts needed bandaging, and he needed to make sure there wouldn’t be an infection. Regardless, he couldn’t help but mentally pat himself on the back as he felt the situation finally start to come under control.
