Bare feet padded across the marble floors of Le Cordon Bijuu and a sea of multicolored flowers danced around Shiiro as he headed through the entryway towards the kitchen, which was just opening and beginning to prepare for the day. The staff knew him and so posed no barrier to entry, though as he entered the kitchen instead of the manager’s office he received some puzzled glances. Weaving through the chaos of the cooks and plates, he soon stood behind the head chef, patiently waiting for her to finish whatever she was doing and turn around. Rage, recognition, puzzlement and finally resignation danced across her face,a general of the kitchen confronted with one of the few problems she couldn’t simply yell away. “What can I do for you, sir?” she asked, poorly hiding exasperation. “I want to learn,” Shiiro replied, grinning and jerking his head in the general direction of all the cooking. The chef’s eyes widened with horror. “Bu-...” muffled snickers were heard over the raucous sounds of sizzling and metal clinking, the head chef’s subordinates amused at her discomfort. She paused a moment, as if considering how to minimize the damage.
“An!” she barked suddenly, a person appearing next to her almost before she finished the monosyllabic name. “You are to satisfy our owner’s curiosity about cooking. Break room.” Without another word she returned to her work, which happened to take her as far away from Shiiro as possible. Following his new instructor, Shiiro found himself in his staff’s breakroom. As he waited, a variety of vegetables, utensils, pans, and spices found their way to the table. “Alright sir, if you could just make a stir fry to the best of your capabilities I’ll figure out where you are in your culinary expertise and we can work from there,” An said, fidgeting nervously when his request was met with a blank stare. “You know, it’s like sauteing…” Shiiro smiled, chuckling quietly. “I have no idea what saute means, my friend. We’re starting from the absolute beginning here.” An seemed to struggle for a moment, wrestling his face into a mask of calm as he began removing things from the table until only a few vegetables and a knife remained. “Very well, sir. I will demonstrate proper cutting technique, and then you can try to duplicate my methods.” A large carrot was placed on a cutting board, a knife raised over it, and in a moment flat, the blade blurred from one end of the vegetable to the other, the round orange slices falling into individual segments in a way that was almost beautiful, not a word Shiiro had ever associated with carrots before.
After a moment, he realized that it was his turn, and smiled wryly. Taking a carrot of his own, he brought a knife to it. *Cruuuuuuunch* One cut down and no disaster yet, other than the not-quite suppressed twitches in An’s eyes as the knife came down again, painfully slowly. Before too long, the carrot was bested, falling to pieces not nearly as graceful as his instructors, but falling to pieces nonetheless. Unreasonably proud of this accomplishment, he seized another carrot, dicing it slightly faster, and then another, his speed ever increasing, the slices becoming somewhat more uniform. Soon enough, he was out of uncut carrots, and looked up to find that his mentor was nowhere to be seen.
As if sensing that he had been missed, An walked through the door, a plate containing all the items that he had previously removed from the table, cut, spiced, and prepared in a large bowl. With a sniff, he collected what were presumably the best of the cut carrots, scooping them into the bowl as well and given it a few shakes to mix them in. “I’ve already done most of the prep, sir,” began an as he removed a large pan from a cupboard. “Now, I will simply pour enough oil onto the pan to just cover the bottom,” he continued, doing just that. Pressing a button, a flame appeared beneath the pan, the slight smell of gas filling the room for a moment. “Perhaps you will do this next time, if you would like, but please simply observe this time.” After a brief period of heating the oil, the contents of the bowl were dumped into the pan, remaining in an upside-down bowl shape that was systematically destroyed and spread around. Shiiro stood quietly, observing as everything was heated and cooked evenly, carefully noting the times and motions. Before long, the dish was finished, and two bowls were filled, leaving plenty for others.
Sitting down with An, Shiiro tasted the food. Delicious. Relatively simple, but flawless and fantastic for it. Before he forgot, he decided to pull out a notebook he carried everywhere with him, furiously writing down notes and what knowledge he had gleaned from the demonstration. “You like it?” An asked, though he knew the answer. “Not bad for the dishwasher, eh?” Shiiro paused, surprised. “Heh. Yeah, I wash the dishes here. I don’t know a whole lot about cooking relative to most of the rest of staff, but you know much less even than me,” An continued, laughing. “So, until I am confident you won’t burn down the building, I will teach you the basics before you try crafting any of the signature dishes, if you have no objections, sir.” Shiiro shrugged. “I want to learn. Who from isn’t all that important really. I’ll have try to replicate what you showed me and report back to you on how it goes. Do you happen to have any notes on the preparations you made while I was cutting?” The dishwasher smiled and withdrew a folded page from within his. “Thought you might ask that. Made a copy for you, since I had plenty of time to wait while you chopped up those carrots,” he replied jokingly. Shiiro smiled in turn, taking the page. “It’ll go faster next time,” he replied, standing up and walking back out, pleased to see that many of the tables were packed nearly as soon as the business had opened.
Able Learner
Rank: "C"
Skill: Social Trait

Cooking/Baking
Rank: "E"
Skill: Skill
Effect: Cooking and Baking allows the user to create superb dishes.
Special: ---
Drawback: ---
Description: With a successful Cooking/Baking check, a cook can make nutritious meals out of just about any edible substance and can create hot meals even in the wilderness. Failure means that the food is disgusting and inedible. Cooking a meal generally takes no more than an hour, although the preparation of ingredients and dishes may take several. When choosing this skill the user must choose either Cooking or Baking. Baking is the ability to cook by dry heat without direct exposure to a flame, typically in an oven or on a hot surface. Look in Task Skills thread found in the Skills and Traits Index for more information. Each time learned user gets 5 die roll to increase the skill.
